Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor |OT| One Title to rule them all

Look at the image, you can't jump over him, one of his strengths.

Yeah, if this is how hard elite captains are, pretty much warchiefs are impossible.

Fuck, he is a beast. But there has to be a way.

Now I am both nervous and excited about facing one of these guys.

Wait, isn't the consensus here that the game is too easy?

I don't know what people are talking about, this game can at times get unbearably difficult, to the point of frustration - depending on what you are trying to accomplish. Sometimes it can be a cake walk, very rarely though.

Shit, not to me. I'm pretty much feeling the same way as Smash88 at the moment, but I'll continue to upgrade the runes and see if that helps. I enjoy a good challenge, but a lot of times I find myself getting frustrated and annoyed when I see 20+ orcs spawning and rushing me while I'm dealing with a captain. It gets on my nerves, I know many disagree with that but it just does for me.

The people who've said it's too easy are mostly people who've spent 5 hours not doing any story missions and thus having not unlocked very many enemy types or fought multiple of the harder captains at once.

I haven't had a chance to play this much since I've been into the Dark Souls 2 DLC, but I just wrapped that up so I get to dig deep in here tomorrow hopefully

There are more zones than the zone you start in right? Decent game so far, outside of the stupid cat beasts, even if it is a little repetitive.

Also hope there are more than 20 story missions...

That's me for now until my internet gets fixed. I will say that I've been surrounded by 5 captains randomly and it quickly had me overwhelmed. So even without advancing in the story, things can get hairy very quickly.

Metroidvania

People called Romanes they go the house?
Yeah, trying to get a bunch of 'banked' level ups has kind of backfired on me.

I've only got a 14 captain as of yet, but trying to do side missions without some form of greater crowd control (especially when 2-3 captains show up during one), and before you can brand, is not a recipe for good times.

So thanks to bullshit Internet fanboys I'm not getting this on Friday now. It's gonna be Saturday. I lost my launch day delivery. Still got it for 37 tho from Amazon

Played more or less 7 hours and most of the time I just ran around killing Captains and ignored the storyline. I did reach a point where killing captains is just too damn easy. It's all just get to x8 in 4 or so shots, remember to R2 + X when he's down and Y + B when you can. Rinse and repeat.

I'm probably gonna turn off all the on-screen help to up the difficulty but it's so much fun so far.

yup this game is super hard I've died multiple times, been randomly jump by captains when I am almost dead who are seeking revenge, some of them have new skills - having a blast with it so far doing some main missions here and there and some sides missions on the way

The best two pieces of advice I can give to someone who's finding the game too hard is:

1) Always research weaknesses beforehand. Tugog the Guardian aside, all captains I've seen (in the first area) have a way to make killing them trivial if you set up the encounter properly.
2) Know when to run. You don't even have to abort the mission, just get out of line of sight and reassess your approach. There's so many environmental items that make handling crowds easier: restart the fight on your terms.

lol, initiated the fight against the 5th warchief I needed, and another one of the ones I had branded decided to show up. I was like, "oh crap, please don't die". Stealth-branded the warchief I needed, and while one of my existed warchiefs was getting hammered by 3 captains, I teleported to a nearby tower and it prevented his death.

TAJ

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
Ok, that captain who's been pissing me off just randomly ran up to me alone in a little side canyon and I murdered him.

Exactly, you can literally just fuck around right at the start for hours(like i'm doing) and just have an amazing time.

Glad to hear the difficulty ramps up, then! I've spent only about two hours dicking about in the game, and the game is very easy thus far. Cleared out a stronghold easily enough even after the alarm was raised.

Game is great so far, my greatest gripe with it is that it feels nothing like a LOTR game, and while I love the game itself, my inner Tolkien fanboy is not satisfied... Would be great if it had Howard Shore's score and some recognisable places of interest...

It sure is amazingly satisfactory to finally kill a captain that has been pissing you off and taunting you for hours on end. Ishmoz the Clever is no more.

Literally impossible, unless you have enemies around. If I kill all of his body guards, I have no one to raise my streak up to x8 to do damage to him. So I run around like an idiot, then 3 captains and 20 other orcs show up and I get destroyed. Unless you are perfect, and I mean on mistakes, you can't win against all of them. Running away, proves pointless as the encounter will just happen again, with equal results.

Guess what, this motherfucker is immune to stuns because of his giant ass shield.

There is literally no exploitable weakness - by the time you get a chance to raise your streak, you are surrounded with no way to win.

Have you tried jumping behind him wit double tapping X and then wraith stun from behind?.. I remember it was one of the ways to kill one of the Arkham enemies in AC.

So after the first day I've noticed that maybe I do need to go ahead with the story a bit. I've gotten the hang on how to fight enemies and lower level captains (aka first two rows) don't offer much of a challenge anymore.

How I won against him:

Arrow all his shield guards with headshots before running up to them, then keep doing drain on him till he dies. Took 3 min.
Edit: However, I do have the upgrade to have 6 arrows so that helped

He believed random people about the X1 version's performance.

Wait, why would he blame "fanboys" instead of the developer/publisher for nobody having the official word on res/framerate? And the worst anybody said the XB1 version would be was 720p30fps, when it's more likely to be 900p30fps.

Has anyone come across texture glitches on the PC version? I asked in the performance thread, but this one has more traffic.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Boogie's streaming right now, pretty hilarious stuff, and I'm the kind of person that generally hates over active streamers. But apparently if you mess up a bit much early then your nemeses just go crazy power-wise. Seems like the game can get pretty hard if you aren't experienced with the Batman/SD style combat.

Yep. I have to eat a lot of crow because I was worried beforehand that the game was too easy. Then this exact thing happened to me. There was this one guy.... Well it became my mission to kill him no matter that my many deaths at his hand helped his career.

xxracerxx

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

By far the hardest dudes I’ve had are Hunter captains with deadly strike (they basically trigger a Last Chance in one hit, taking out all my health), poison, combat master, invulnerable to stealth and ranged, monster slayer… but of course, their only weakness is the sight of Caradors or Graugs (that they can kill in one hit).

I’ve had two of them like that, and one of them keeps coming back. He’s a level 20 now with every scar under the sun, bag over his head… one ugly motherfucker.

I love this game.

Welp, reinstalling didn't work. Guess the universe just doesn't want me playing this game. Sucks, as I had to make a decision to buy this over Smash 3DS I had been anticipating. Now I get neither. Such is the risk of PC, I guess.

Maybe you already tried this, but if not, delete the game files in My Documents > WB > Middle Earth and restart the game. I think my config files got screwed up somehow and caused my game to run very, very poorly. Like, 1-2fps, slow load times, etc. Once the files were rebuilt, the problem cleared up.

That describes my current nemesis almost to a T. Except mine is vulnerable to stealth (thank God). Gonna have to find a way to get the drop on the little bastard.

It doesn't say immune to stealth attacks so you should be able to sneak kill him?

Crowd control man, divide and conquer. Pick a few of them off, hide, distract some, stealth kill a bunch, exploit the warchief's weakness. I've killed 3 warchieves so far and only died once to one because a bodyguard I thought I took care of came back from the dead and he had poison spears. If you can manage the crowd (not fight all of them simultaneously) and use the chief's weakness, you can kill him easily, and then the crowd will disperse. Also you can use your other abilities like brutalize etc.

Sam here. I've died about 10 times in the last hour trying to do any mission.

Those bastards took an interrogation from me. A captain was fleeing and I chased him down. As soon as I initiated the interrogation, he took a spear in the ribs from one of his own uruks, and then he died. I needed his intel, bastards!

I've gotten killed once by a captain. And that's because I was doing one of those special missions with arrows, was getting shot up and then him and another captain showed up. So he fought me as I'm dodging arrows with another captain. He then went on to brag about killing me, big mistake. I killed him.

Can somebody confirm how we do the head chopping? You know when the orc looks at you tells you something and you can decide what to do with him? Only happened to me once. I thought you'd have to just keep htting them but you can kill them with regular sword strikes.

Loving this game although I haven't found anything too challenging yet. I'm sure that's to come though

I did manage to piss off two captains at once, one being the ranged fire crossbow guy that shoots exploding bolts. I didn't last too long against them both

My only real complaint is getting runes. I have like 7 bow runes and like 2 sword, 2 dagger runes

I must have misunderstood the chart they showed because I thought you got runes depending on the weapon you used. I always kill with sword but always get bow runes instead :(

Ground assassination. It's R2 + Square for PS platforms. Not sure if what you're playing it on though
