to those who own the game, how is the cockpit view? i've read some impressions claiming that the view is too narrow and that you lose potentially important hud elements. thougthts?

I agree with those opinions. They need to change the FOV in cockpit mode and implement the HUD. For now I am sticking with bumper cam.

The AI in this game can be so cheap. I was right in front of the finish line and a car just comes and rams me. This has happened 3 times. Also, the AI doesn't move out of the way. Moving up positions without hitting the other cars is incredibly difficult. Combine all of that with the handling and the game became a chore to me. The tires loose traction way to quickly on turns. I guess it's because you are supposed to drift, but even then. How are you supposed to drift around corners without hitting anyone? To me it feels like an arcade racer that puts sim restrictions on the player and that is very frustrating.

I listened to the Jeff Gerstmann quick look, and other than getting angry at the start which led to some petty comments I thought it wasn't bad. Why does he get so het up when he's just chatting to one guy in a studio, a guy that is giving him his full attention?

Anyway he doesn't enjoy the driving model, so he scored it low but everyone has to try the game because they might consider the driving model optimum. In my opinion it's like GT after you've tuned the car to be race worthy.

Also, does no one grasp the reason for time of day changes? It's to challenge the driver under different visibility conditions, but when Jeff talked about setting challenges he mentioned he wouldn't set it at certain times of day because it would be more difficult to drive?

But yeah, you're not going to sway a guy to play it who doesn't enjoy the way it drives, but that's a very individual preference.

Watched some of the Giantbomb quick look yesterday and came away disappointed with what it seems some people have come to expect from racing games.

I don't play them much personally but there have been a few that I really got into for a while back in the day (R4, Initial D etc.).

Some of the most intense moments were in trying to maintain my lead till the very end, I'd feel my heart beating like crazy when an intense race was coming to an end. Sometimes though I would mess up and that would screw me over, especially if it was towards the end. But you know what? That disappointment was part of the experience, it made me want to play better (just like in fighting games).

So what does Jeff mention as big negatives against the gameplay for DC yesterday? Penalties for driving bad and no rewind function for when he messes up in a race. Have racing games really become that freaking casual? You should be able to quickly rewind when you screw up and act like it never happened? What?

And then he complains how drifting isn't piss easy instead of taking the time to learn how to play the game. You couldn't really drift in Initial D iirc but there were other methods that helped you achieve similar results (like Machine Gun Shifting), learning and mastering the various techniques was part of the fun.

Will have to take his opinion with a huge grain of salt moving forward.

Exactly how I feel man. I didn't even know what the rewind feature was untill that review. Gaming nowadays is a giant casual fest and I hate it lol. Too much hand holding bullshit anymore that's become standard.

Just read the PS+ version got delayed. Will there ever be a game launch that doesn't have server issues day 1?! I don't understand why its such a surprise to developers every fucking time!

sounds like the AI programmer from motorstorm is still in lol.

Hey guys, I just got this game.
Sorry if this has been asked before, but the game is not using my whole screen size and i dont seem to find an option for fixing that in the menu. Any solutions to that?

It's difficult at times. This game does not let you win easily at times. If you persevere a little i bet you'll change opinion about handling and ai.

Jeff's comment about the corner penalties was great because he believed the answer to his issues was to make the tracks more like a "corridor" amazing meta comment!!

To fix the letterbox issue, go to the Video Output Settings on your PS4, select the correct TV size and then go to Sound & Screen and adjust your Display Area Settings to fill the entire screen.

Edit: Damn I was beaten to it xD

I managed to get online via the single event tab and signed in to the social hub there.

Fuck I love everything about this game!!!

- The handling is fantastic;
- the lighting and visuals while in motion are second to none;
- sense of speed is terrifying while in cockpit view;
- ease of getting straight into the racing i.e click, click, racing;
- nailing a tight corner feels so freaking good; &
- I love the soundtrack.

I'm going to put sooo many hours into this. Considering I'm having an absolute blast trying to beat my own scores, I can just imagine how good it's going to be when everything is up and running....sooo good.

Even when using the hatches this game is great but after that the game truely is something else when you get away from the hatches.

I have never played such an intense game where you just don't get sick of trying to go one better each and every lap or challenge.

A matter of shaving off milliseconds can keep you going for ages on the same track. That feeling when there is a slight pause as you cross the checkered flag when it's a really tight finish to beating a time and in that slight pause you see that you've scraped in by 1000th of a second :)

I'm fucking addicted!!!

The AI is impossibly rigid in sticking to it's ideal race line. It means Ai cars bunch up A LOT...and it's almost impossible to avoid some collisions (rubbin' is racein', after all). Given that..I think some of the collision penalty garbage either has to be turned down OR the AI needs to be a little more adaptive. If I'm on a spot....the AI's first action shouldn't be to bounce me off it...at which point I GET penalized.

:)

Which is strange.Why is this happening in Driveclub only?I am getting the game tomorrow but really strange indeed.
It's not Driveclub only. FIFA 15 is using this as well and having this garbage display size done on the system level going forward is one annoying screen per game less.

everygame should support that global setting for the ps4 of screensize. it makes sense to have a global setting.
but i guess most people didnt check if if they are getting weird screen sizes.

I dont agree with any of this...DivideClub :)

So I've played the PS+ version of the game for about 2...3 hours? or so now. I guess that's enough for some thoughts. Played only 2 cars (Mini and Mercedez ), because PS+ restrictions and some other unlockables were Club-necessary.

Visually, I agree with one of the poster here who said 'subtly beautiful.' The game is beautiful, but it's in its occasional brilliances that really makes the difference. That turn where the yellow petals flutter, the sudden sunlight blinding you, the fireworks. Those moments really make the difference for DC.

That being said, I'm not downplaying the visuals. In fact, I think it's a praise to the gameplay that I was constantly stuck focused on the race, and never felt 'out-of-it', aside from the moments of brilliance that actually impact your visual sights. I really like the handling and the overall atmosphere in the game. The handling is fun, and the game is challenging yet simple enough to draw you into the moment-to-moment driving.

I guess what I like about DC so far, is that the game really forces you to play the game like a normal human being. Keep on track, avoid crashes, play it aggresive, yet focus on keeping it safe. It's tempting to play like a crazy crasher, but it's when you play subtly, and focus on blocking your opponent and finding the lines to take over that I felt the game really shined for me.

Granted, I'm only playing Amatuer, so maybe the AI is still kind, but I liked it. Sure, the AI can be aggresive and you kinda can't avoid crash-play, but it has never reached the point where I felt like the game was cramping me.

This ai is indeed tough but I just need to get better. I was doing so well in the rookie events. Now I've hit a roadblock, I can't even get within the top 8 let alone earn a star in the Scotland race event that follows the rookie trophy.

I lol'd. I'd be raging if that happened to me at the end of a hard race. I really don't understand the point of that timer anyway, since the tracks are surrounded by invisible walls.

They want you to drive clean, that's why you also do not necessarily need to win races to get the most fame.

Ok I give up until the developers patch this crap. It's too dark because of the terrible HDR solution (?) the game uses which makes it impossible to see where I'm going and the AI is on the same level as Daytona USA/Ridge Racer 1 and if you get in their way they try to drive right through you.

It's a shame as the dev have at least one truly great racer on their resume, I'm glad I didn't pay full price but should have played the + version first. Oh well.

That's a thing i saw on quite some videos as well and I'm a bit afraid of this. Oh well, I'll find out after work.

Having to restart a whole race because some cheap AI rammed you at the last second is lame and most importantly NOT FUN. Saying a rewind feature makes a game casual is just ridiculous. You can enjoy your "ultra hardcore" game that appeals to a very small amount of people all you want, just don't expect everyone else to like it.

I know most of the thread's been devoted to talk about the server issues, and I do agree that it absolutely sucks that they're down, but I am just using that time to work on the Tour stuff and having a great time doing so. Server issues at the launch of a game are something I've just come to expect in this day and age. It doesn't mean I'm OK with it,, and I think it's a frequent enough problem that developers should devote more resources to load-testing their shit, but at the same time it's not that big a deal for games that offer up a lot of offline stuff to do in the meantime, which this one does (unlike the PC Diablo III launch).

The game itself is a little above average for me, but not the greatest racer I have ever played so far by any stretch. I don't want to say that I'm disappointed, but I was hoping for a little bit more than what I've experienced so far.

I like the handling - while not super realistic, they nailed a few things really well like lift-off oversteer and weight transfer, which force the player to take a more realistic approach to braking than something like PGR4 where you could be a little more heavy-handed. As a whole the game does feel very similar in handling to the PGR physics model, which is a good and refreshing thing since it's been so long since that game came out, and no arcade racer has even come close for me.

I love the visuals.... most of the time. My problem here is that it's not consistent. India in particular has a lot of areas that look almost last-gen, and the lighting during the middle of the day looks pretty terrible at times. GT6 has a very good mid-day look, with subtle bits of bloom and great HDR effect - I was hoping this would be similarly impressive. In the morning, evening, and night, though - WOW does this game look amazing. The cloud simulation is fantastic too, and there have been a few moments where it was almost too real looking to be true. My other real complaint is that everything looks better when not using the cockpit view - I feel like the details and shine on the car models looks very different form the behind-the-car cams.... which sucks because that's my least favorite way to play a racing game. I'm doing it here on occasion though because the game looks amazing like this, and because it's still very playable. Lighting in the cockpit itself, especially when driving under lights in the tunnels - so good. Framerate could be better, and oh are there ever jaggies at times. In short, it's a very mixed bag of impressive and ho-hum, and that drags it down for me sometimes.

I wish there was more variety in the races - some of the PGR things like cone-runs and overtake challenges were a blast - so far this has just been about either racing or time trials. And while those are both lots of fun, I would like some level of variety to shake things up. I remember an old E3 or gamescom video that included a slalom or gate run, so maybe I just need to play more (I played up to driver level 7 yesterday - almost done with the first page of tour stuff). Also - some American or Japanese cars would have been a great inclusion. What's here is pretty stellar, and a lot of my modern supercar favorites are represented, but they could have given us so much more! Also, all of the environments are based around hilly and winding mountainous roads. Would have appreciated at least one city to zoom around - something with a lot of right-angle turns or chunks of expressway coursing through it. Again - a little more variety than what's here both aesthetically and to spice up the types of driving techniques needed.

Overall it's a good game, and I think a lot of my concerns can be addressed with DLC - car packs and even new environments are things I would actually pay for in the game, especially if each environment had the dozen or so tracks that the base ones have. I don't know if they built the game with content expansion in mind, but it's a game that would certainly benefit from it. I'm also interested in seeing what the social features of the game bring to the table, and if they flesh out what's already here.

It is, it makes it completly casual, it destroys the whole concept of actually playing for the challenge itself. It's a stupid concept that needs to die.

Cheap AI you say? Well, rewinding your mistake to avoid all the hassle of learning a track and how to proper drive on it is a cheap concept too.

Did prrety well so far in single player mode (84/225 stars) but the "Punching above your weight"-Event broke my neck.
Taking the Bentley Continental GT Speed onto such a windy track for the first time is something!

That's been my favorite event! Took a lot of practice and patience, but I finally took first in it. Still haven't gotten that :47 lap time though...

Does the image look somewhat soft to anyone else? It definitely doesn't look as sharp as 1080p does normally.

Yes. Do you notice a sharper image at the starting line? I seem to recall that. The second you start moving the game adds motion blur or some sort of screen shake to every thing in the background that's not your car. Definitely makes things look a big fuzzy. Surely in photo mode they'll let you toggle DoF, motion blur etc.
