Yeah, it's really weird, devs have said numerous times that there is no rubber banding...

But, there definitely is something - no matter how well you drive you can never really shake the other cars totally. You can compare it if you drive slower but still manage to win, the AI times are much slower - but if you do a perfect race, they still almost match you. Does the AI adapt to your driving?

I believe they said that the ai cars would never go beyond their performance specs. So, there may be some in spec ai rubber banding (as cars will drive and go as fast as they can for a certain car), but not do the fake double speed rubber banding. I thought I read that here somewhere.

Also, the game is pretty amazing. The lighting is almost too real sometimes... like why the hell am I driving so fast in these conditions... it messes with your head a little bit, since you get that real visual cue you do while driving in real life.

Also, my daughter keeps telling me to "slow down or you are going to die." She also keeps taking the controller away to drive. So, if you see me online driving extra bad, I will blame it on her.

It’s been disappointing not having access to PSN and being unable to engage in DC’s social function and multiplayer component. These technical issues are all too common these days, but that is neither here nor there.

With the network down I had plenty of time last night to familiarize myself with the game, get a handle for the controls/physics, and make solid progress in the Tour mode. I’ve gotten every trophy or challenge or whatever they are called for all of the races in the first two categories (Rookie & Amateur) and have made solid progress into the Semi-Pro Tour. I think I stopped my session last night when I got to level 17. My thoughts thus far are as follows:

The graphics are quite spectacular, but I really wish there was better AA. As you level up into faster and faster cars, cockpit view becomes a bit difficult to drive from considering the POV, subtle jaggies, and speed do not play well together. The sensation of speed is spectacular, but until I memorize the circuits, I just can’t see clearly enough to race from the cockpit view in the really fast cars at the moment. So towards the latter part of my play through I opted for the Dash cam. Minor quibbles aside, the graphics, especially at sunrise and dusk are spectacular. Mid-day cloud cover is also a highlight. I can’t remember the name of the track, but in the Amateur Tour (I think) there was a point to point race in Chile that was a photorealistic jaw dropping spectacular turbo-beauty-shed-a-tear kind of amazing experience. There was ominous cloud cover above as I climbed the desert mountain, at one point I was racing along the side of a ridge with a spectacular view of the valley to my left… in the distance the cloud cover broke and sunlight was piercing through and illuminating the valley. At that moment the ‘depth’ and scale of the landscapes really set in. It looked like a photo.. it was amazing blasting along the ridge in the Lotus Evora, the painted lines on the road flying under the car, the supercharger squealing as I redlined… really, truly, spectacular. This is just one (probably the best so far) of many graphically impressive ‘moments’ I had last night.
B+ on the Graphics

Speaking of cars. I’ve unlocked most of the hot hatches, many of the sports cars, two supers, and one hyper. The hyper is the Ruf, and as I mentioned above, it was unwieldy from the cockpit view racing on an un-memorized track… it was a beast. I really love the Lotus Evora, it handles well, inspires confidence, and sounds amazing. I’ve got a full on home theater system with 7.1 Klipsch speakers, a 1000watt Onkyo receiver, massive Outlaw Audio subwoofer, and the game really shines. The cars also strike me as sounding very accurate. The first few races from the cockpit view, I was slightly underwhelmed with the hot hatches, they didn’t sound all that powerful, but then I got the A3 (my friend has one in real life) and I realized, shit… this is exactly how the A3 sounds when you wring it out to redline. The second I was in the seat of a Mercedes AMG, the audio started having more grunt. Then I drove the Evora, and the supercharger was phenomenal, as was the rear engine audio coming through the back speakers. Then the R8, then a Ferrari, then a Ruf… they kept sounding more and more beastly. Evo nailed the sound design.
A on the sound.

Going into the release I was super bummed that my G27 is not supported, but considering how the game is being billed as a sim-cade racer, I hoped that it would be assessable without a wheel, and it definitely is. It did not take long before I felt very confident driving the cars with the DS4. There is just enough sim in the handling to make the cars feel unique. Even when I push a vehicle to the edge, the DS4 allows me to catch an error and recover. In this regard I am very pleased and am no longer in a rush to get a T500/300RS. Drifting took me a few laps to get down, but now I’ve got it and can collect the points when pop-up drift challengers are goals in any give race… though drifting is not really my style, I’m a hug-the-apex kind of driver and like to get on the power early when exiting a corner. Oh and also, the bumps, and rises on various tracks are awesome, the sense that you are on the verge of catching air when you go over a rise in the road is thrilling (it’s caught me off guard a few times and I’ve lost control).
A+ on the sim-cade physics.

The AI is also fun, though it does like to really get up on your ass. It seems “rubbing is racing” is a credo of Driveclub. I don’t mind (in fact I enjoy) the side to side jostling, but I really avoid rear ending the AI because it’s a bullshit way to race. I wish the AI was as “polite” on the road as I am, but it’s understandable. Often when I get rear ended by the AI they are in significantly more powerful cars and they blaze up on me after a long straight… it’s the nature of the beast though. The AI is plenty fun, and only once or twice last night did I feel I was unfairly impacted in a way that ended up affecting my race negatively. Honestly running the hot hatches with cars 3 abreast nudging one another side to side, was awesome. I don’t think that kind of racing is going to fly when I get to the hyper car level, but at slower speeds it is very fun.
B- on the AI.

Finally... The menus… oh god the menus (and music) are excellent, best in class, minimal, tight, quick, effective, clear… sharp is the best word I can think of. You can blaze through the various layers from the intro menu all the way through to a Tour race in a matter of seconds. It is so fast… and just sitting on any give menu, listening to the background music is good times. Last night I’d do a few races, then sit on a menu and post a message on GAF and I was repeatedly impressed by the background music. design/graphics and sound are stellar.
A+ on the menu & way-finding.

So that was a bit of a novel, but I hope many of you agree with my assessment and are enjoying what Evo has developed. More importantly I hope that many of you sitting on the sideline wondering if this game is for you, have been able to gleam some useful information from the post. What is presented at the moment is a really good couch racing game, and we all know it’s simply going to get better once they introduce proper leader boards, private lobbies, race replay, photomode, and weather. I just hope those updates are not all that distance.

Well done Rushy & team. Kudos

I'm glad that someone else (multiple someone elses really) are seeing the (for the lack of a better term) Rubberbanding AI. As someone else mentioned i've noticed a hundred times (i'm well over halfway through the tour and redid many races multiple times for the stars) that if i'm driving poorly I can still catch up, even after a bad, spin out crash I can catch up to the leader. But if I run a dang near perfect lap shaving seconds off my best lap time the AI is right on my tail. It might not be serious rubberbanding like in mario kart back in the day..but there is something similar in place here.

Goddamn, CTR3 Clubsport is an absolute drift monster. Also this game must have the most detailed tracks of all time. Those scenery shots before the races are completely ridiculous.

That is exactly what this feels like and I love it.

It's the lack of all that modern "fluff" and "you're awesome - let's fill some bars" that appeals to me, I think.

This so much. This game takes me back to the golden age of racing games. I am still baffled about the reviews. Do people not value gameplay over fluff anymore? I understand some of the complaints but this is a damn good game.

There's definitely some sort of "rubberbanding" at play. It may just be some sort of dynamic AI, but I've definitely seen them accelerate at seemingly impossible speeds. They also seem to "get better" if I'm in the lead. Or maybe I'm just insane.

Gross. I do not like rubberbanding in races.

Really? all of the preview footage i saw was terribly compressed and soft, no idea how that could possibly look better than the video output of this game... i agree with the rest of what you have to say though. cant wait for photo mode.

To be honest I think the compression and "softness" hid a lot of the IQ problems the game has. Especially the aliasing and lack of AF.

There is no rubberbanding, depends on car type your up against, how your driving skills are, maybe the AI took a corner better than you, so they will gain speed, so many variables, unless Rushy is a lying dog, wich I don't think he is.

Same here. I've gone almost exclusively to the bumper-cam, at least until I get the tracks down.

So I've been playing DC PS+ edition since yesterday and I gotta say I'm addicted to this game. I thought 30 fps for racing games is unacceptable but so far I don't have any problem with it. I like the sense of speed of this game and the lighting work is sublime. Once the server is up I'll buy the full version because I want to try the other tracks too!

Now if I only I can buy T300RS wheel to play this game...

One way to check if rubber banding can occur is to run a custom race and observe the positions of the vehicles in different runs.

1) Run a normal baseline race without much effort, several laps and keep track of your average time. Note the AI positions (specifically which cars) with respect to where you are, if possible.

2) Run the SAME race, but this time as good of a race as possible, the same amount of laps. Try to destroy your time. Also keep track of the position of the AI positions, again. Look for times where you improve a lap time significantly and notice a position change in an AI car that is more than normal.

3) Run time trials of the same track and post the best times you can do. Compare these to the times you achieved in part 2.

This should give you a good idea if the AI went faster than your car at a time when you were going what you would consider as fast as possible (based on your time trial results). It is difficult to determine if the AI stays close to you the entire race. However, if you get significantly far away from all AI and run a near perfect lap (compared to your time trials) and the AI is up in your grill, chances are he's using a little bit of the NOx.

i used the fastest amateur car , came out of the corner faster and they just pull away sometimes lol

If you don't drive well enough, or they have higher acceleration / top speed, they're going to catch up. I've had plenty of races that I've held the lead the whole time after taking it.

For sure the sense of speed is pretty spot on in this game.
When playing other games, GT in particular, I always end up braking too late because it feels like i'm doing half the speed that i'm actually doing.
I feel like a pro being able to pass cars on the inside or outside of a corner, depending on their position, without losing much speed or hitting a wall because I misjudged my speed.

I sympathize most for people who bought the game and can't play the online aspects of it. I'm not much of a racing fan (although Motorstorm was one of my favorite franchises last generation), but I do want to check out the Plus version at some point. I think it's smart on their end to delay releasing it until they can stabilize the systems they have in place, although I think it was short sighted to not expect the kind of numbers of users that are trying to get online with it, given how little there is on the PS4 as far as racing titles.

Hopefully they can get things under control and get the Plus version out over the next few days. A beta weekend probably wouldn't have been a horrible idea, especially in light of how common that is these days for online games, but it is what it is at this point, and we can only hope Evo will learn from this and use that information going forward.

Review..

Well done Rushy & team. Kudos

Thanks for sharing your impressions, I really hope I'll share the same enthusiasm for the game after playing it tomorrow. Would you say the driving is comparable to the PGR series? And are the in-game challenges addicting?

Bought it last night, played for an hour, enjoyed every minute of it. I don't see a lot of the complaints.

It's easy to play yet punishing when you mess up. I love that. No assists, no rewinds, no bullshit, just pure racing and leaderboard romps. Great.

Graphics are disappointing. The environments are brilliantly lit and have an amazing atmosphere and the ToD changes really do affect the entire visual quality, but the individual environmental detail is low, textures are muddy, and there is noticeably aliasing. Looks amazing in motion, looks just alright when stopped.

Because I'm stupid I just impulse bought the game, problem is I decided to go with the digital edition for some reason. Still at that lovely 1%....

I must admit, I never played PGR.
With regard to the challenges, yes they are addicting. I've not stopped playing any particular Tour race until I've completed all of the challenges. They are not a chore, they are fun. And honestly, the early challenges really teach you how to play the game (drifts, driving lines etc) and get you comfortable with the physics. The time trial races where you are pitted against your ghost are super fun. The first one, in Scotland, is beautiful. I ended up besting the challenge time by 4 or 5 seconds just because I wanted to keep besting my personal time, shaving seconds, 1 by 1.

My favorite tracks are the point to points. Chile, Norway, and Canada are dynamite. Tonight I want to memorize a few so that I can really open up (with confidence) some of the more powerful cars i've unlocked.

May be Asia? Saw a bunch of screenshots yesterday of Asia PSN having it up

I don't want to play this without the servers but waiting on something with no ETA is a pita. How indepth are the driveclub social features anyway?

Definitely makes it a better experience. For example, I'm sick of chasing my own ghost. Need em leaderboards to keep me improving.

I really hope the servers work tomorrow, I've got all day off work.

I hope they're up by Friday, day off! :)

got a chance to play some of the other tracks and wow, i love the attention to detail, it just makes the game that more enjoyable.

I cant wait for that weather patch!

Man it was a mistake to try the first few races out before heading to class. All I can think about was how fun it was when I need to be studying for the midterm I'm about to take.

Have to say I was kind of skeptical about the dynamic day/night stuff but man it really adds a lot to races when the time shifts during the race. I'm really drawn in by the environment and it makes things always feel fresh. I can't wait for weather like rain and snow!

This game is pretty reminiscent of NFS: Shift. I loved Shift. The whole cockpit view, great audio, sense of speed, and single player progression is basically the same. It's basically Shift with holy shit omg amazing level tracks/backgrounds.

probably because it came out after Forza Horizon 2? Because of FOrza Horizon 2, Drive Club was a little bit of a letdown to me. Drive Club is good, but FH2 has just spoiled me. The open world aspect of FH2 has made it seem much better than DriveClub to me. Of course not being able to play online yet with DriveClub hasn't helped either. I would prefer to race with people online than the solo stuff that I have only been able to play so far in DC.
