I have had two GCs and both were black. First one was a launch black one, I was a teenager and didn't want purple. Second one was more recent, and it had to be black because it had to match my Gameboy Player. Not doing that tacky crap with different colored system + accessories, and since I still had my GB Player I wasn't about to do something crazy like import another one in a different color.

But I like the GC in black. I'm not wild about the spice or Q. Purple is cool. Don't remember what else is available but I find them pretty hit and miss. Generally I like the darker ones and not the brighter, flashier ones.

What model PVM do you have? I thought most can only display up to 480i, right? (still new to PVM stuff). I love my 20M4U, but I'd kill to have one that could do 480p.

PVM 20L5, it actually goes up to 1080i :). I need to get some sort of AV switcher or the expansion module (adds another set of component/rgb inputs), because changing from RGB to component is a pain.

My favorite gamecube has always been orange, and i finally got one! Gonna install a xenogc chip and region switch soon, but does anyone know of a good mini dvd burner that i can use to start making backups?

Also is there literally any alternative to shelling out $200 to play gamecube in 480p? I got nintendont working on my wiiu and its glorious, but id rather have it working off the actual console

Scour Yahoo Auctions Japan for D-Terminal Cables. They sometimes pop up at reasonable prices, and can be hacked into Component fairly easily.

The D Terminal cable is the ONLY other option and it doesn't really work out that much cheaper in the end when you factor in D Terminal to component connection you're most likely to need. Other than that, I hear there are some projects going on to get the digital 480p straight out of the port through other ways, but I don't think we've seen anything concrete.

I have a second cube that's just waiting for its moment (A Panasonic Q) and I want to eventually set up a nice game room with at least 2 TVs for some LAN play including the 'cube. The scariest thing though is how much buying another set of component cables will cost me though. I'm thinking of going in on a D-term now before they double in price again. Oh the broadband adapter will be pretty brutal too I guess.

Aha! So back to my Hori GC pad... I transplanted a SNES Dpad onto it. It turns out the Hori's pivot point is shorter by like the thickness of a credit card. That's what makes it feel stiff. Anyway, I now have the softness of the SNES Dpad with the solid and crisp GC buttons.

Cool mod thanks for posting. I feel this will help a lot of people.

It's probably time for me to sell my Wavebirds.
Do it just after November 21st when that Smash thirst is critical. I literally remember selling used Hori EX2 sticks for upwards of $120 around SF4 launch, lol

don't want to derail but also don't want to open a thread, but...

Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance is absolutely brutal, I tried to avoid using titania as much as possible but apparently it wasn't enough cause in chapter 10, any lame 2 enemies can kill any of my characters with a bit of luck and absolutely noone would survive 3 enemy attacks in a row.

the enemy seems to hit them twice while mine "miss", (Boyd, Oscar...) I had to restart like 5 times the goddamn chapter and even then a prisoner that I would have recruited later got killed, I said fuck it and went on. Even Titania got killed once by some general, wtf.

I sure I still have much to learn and I am going by trial and error but fuck, this game gives a big middle finger to any casual gamer. With how little patience I have with games these days I am actually surprised I put up with it and reset the game and start over instead of shelving the game back.

and this game is the absolutey KING of missable events

.- didn't talk to Marcia in chapter 3? she doesn't appear in chapter 9, gone
.- didn't notice Ilyanna was a nice girl disguised as enemy? you killed her, now she's gone
.- didn't notice a thief/enemy was about to get your loot? it's gone forever

I have given up on having a "perfect" playthrough with all conversations and possible recruits available, I will be happy to beat the damn game with the party I have now. I hope the newer guys resists attack a lot more though, It's not cool to cruise through the chapter only to have your healer killed in a single encounter at the end of it....

I'm getting a custom job done on mine, gonna be yellow. WOOHOO.

I am quite eager to see the result of this. I am doing a custom paint job myself, glossy white, and another glossy black cube, (1st time ever painting something) and allthough the result is coming along rather nicely, its taking me a staggering amount of time. Like half a year+.

The funny thing is, I know at least the NA version (not sure about PAL) actually stripped out the hardest difficult in favor of a new easy mode. Radiant Dawn actually has a bug that Nintendo somehow overlooked because of that, you can't import an "easy" mode save file.

And that's a shame if Nephenee died, she has never not been amazing for me.

A big tip I didn't think to post before is to make sure you check up on the enemies. You can see their equipment and their movement range if you select them. Sometimes they have weapons that are extra effective against certain types of units, i.e., an armorslayer sword will murder a knight that is typically effective at tanking non-mages. Since you can see how far away that unit can attack, you know where you can put your characters and still be safe.

The first thing I do on any map without fog of war is scroll through the details of every enemy to check up on their equipment and see if they have any drops or a weapon I know I need to watch out for, and that will also let you see if there are any recruitable characters on the field.

.

I made a new save file because of this.

Is it really worth it to re-do the chapter and save/recruit her?? I restarted 6 times yesterday before being able to finish with no deaths....

Personally yes, but I guess it depends on how much you value your time if you are having that much trouble. A lot of people seem to have really good luck with her though, and she comes with the wrath skill which is really good (+50% crit rate at half HP or less), especially when you combine with Vantage (always attack first) or Resolve (1.5x at half HP or less).

She starts out pretty weak though, which might be a problem. I usually feed her some BEXP to get her 2-3 solid levels and from there she fends for herself.

She's also really good in Radiant Dawn so if you ever plan to play that and carry a save file over she can get some bonuses.

You may or may not be interested, but Serenes Forest is probably the best FE site out there with tons of information about each game. You may find some of it useful (shoutout to GAF's own Aveyn Knight).

She's a good character in PoR, but she's a demon God of destruction in RD.

ok, that and the fact that I didn't understand that it was actually a stealth mission has convincend me, today I'll try the chapter again.

I am in dire need of strong and useful recruits. Rolf, Mia, Mist, Ryhs and Soren are all likeable but damn, they love to die, lol I want someone for a change that likes to stay alive for more than 2 battles.

None of those characters are intended to take hits well. Mist and Rhys aren't supposed to get hit, Rolf should be kept in situations where he isn't going to be counter-attacked, and mages usually have pretty low defense so you are better off picking off enemies at range (but at least they can defend themselves up close unlike archers). Mia has lower defense but Myrmidons/Swordmasters are better at evading and outspeeding enemies than most other units, especially when dealing with axe users.

Guys like Boyd, Oscar, Kieran, and Ike are the ones that should be taking most of the hits (ideally, with weapon triangle advantages). Nephenee and Brom should both be good additions to your group since they are also good on the front lines, but they do start out a bit weak so you may have to baby them a little or feed them BEXP if you have any.

And this is making me want to play PoR again. It's been a while. I've also never replayed RD... so I might go through both soon.

I'm paying extra to get a matte job done because I despise the glossy style. The colour I'm going for is the yellowish hue of the Super Mario Bros 3 box art. It'll sit on top of my black Gamrboy Player for a bumble bee look. I'll try to post some decent pics when it's done.

Just finished ripping my GC collection! Now I can put the OG wii back in the cupboard where it belongs.
Did you rip them to play on Wii U?

How/where are you getting it done?
I'm using a guy in the States, known as Customnesguy. He's a pro that used to work on cars. He's also restoring the black GameCube lid too (mine is majorly scratched) and restoring the yellowing controller faceplate so it'll never yellow again. I'll link you to his YT page or Facebook page when I get home if you like.

It's gonna be an expensive mod but I've been going back and forth for ages and want a proper job done.

Yeah, I ripped them for the Wii U using Cleanrip and transferred them to SD using GCIT

They all seem to work well. I only have ten or so games, so I can't speak for all of them.

Wait, you're playing the games on Wii U off n SD card or using a HDD? I have my GC games ripped to a HDD (the same one my Wii games are on) via CFG Loader / USB Loader GX.

For those interested in more info about the guy that's doing my colour mod, his Facebook page is here:

https://www.facebook.com/Customnesguy

If you scroll down his posts, you'll see a neat Super Mario Bros 3 themed NES job he did. The controller job is awesome.

I have them ripped to a 16gb SD card, and I use the basic Nintendont loader via a forwarder channel. Reason I don't use USB is because then my Wii U HDD is not affected.

What's advised for Wii U Gamecube at the moment, Nintendon't?

unless you want to go through unnecessary steps of verifying all of your ripped games for the exact same features, yes. Newest version of Nintendont has actually progressed further than Devolution.

So with Nintendon't you don't need to do the Wiimote verification option? I didn't know this.

It all works fine via SD!

I just load up Nintendont or CFG Loader, choose a game, and then start playing with the pro controller. And no, theres no kind of verification.

I love Nintendont, it's so awesome, I found out about this from my brother when he played Super Smash Bros. Melee on the Wii U. I also have Cleanrip to get my Gamecube games on there.

I'm thinking about doing a comparison between Wii U HDMI and Wii Component for Gamecube games.

As Rich said, it's pretty much plug-and-play once you get it set up (And it's easy to install by homebrew standards.)
Compatibility isn't perfect though, but it does a fine job.for the most part.

As a side note, do minor scratches and dust significantly increase the odds of a bad dump? I did my GC/Wii Library all in one go and I'm kind of afraid to have to test all of them. I've tried one of my games with Nintendont so far and it seemed to work fine, but I worry.

Are you guys using CleanRip to dump on your original GC disc compatible Wii system? I think I had that on my Wii one time but couldn't get it to work.

Once my colour modded GC comes back, I'll probably play on that. It's modded with a Xenochip. Anyone know if it's possible to play on it via SD card?

You don't need a converter, just get dterminal cables from amazon(cheaper than gamecube component cables) and buy this cheap adapter to get component, and besides gamecube component cables are getting tougher to find.

Keep an eye on the BST thread, someone just posted some for $150. They sold already but it's not uncommon that they pop up. You could also post a WTB.

I used USB loader GX for dumping for the same reason you didn't use cleanrip; I was having problems getting that to work. (USBLGX needs DIOS MIOS Lite installed in order for it to rip 'cube games. Which is horribly inconvenient if you have a small SD card, but it seemed to work fine otherwise)

I don't know about GC modding, so I can't say I'm afraid.

I mainly rip using CFG Loader which works fine most of the time. Can you recommend a guide for getting set up with Nintendon't on Wii U? I don't have any homebrew installed on it. I used the GAF homebrew wiki to soft mod my Wii.

Yeah. CFG usb loader mod r76 has nintendont support. Works great - I'm using it right now. It even sources all the artwork just like it does for Wii games.

Only precompiled version available online seems to be a french set one, but if you open config.txt and change FR to EN, its allll good again.

Its also worth getting rid of the line in the config.txt for r76 that sets the library display as the disc photo. You want the boxart, not the disc.

Can do:

Keep in mind before you do anything that you need both a regular SD card (2GB or less) for installing all the homebrew and an SDHC card for actually using Nintendont. (You can just copy all the files to your SDHC card once you're done installing everything.)

Main guide to getting started
This is probably the hardest part of actually setting it up (and the only part where you can actually break something if you're completely careless.) The guide recommends that you use the Lego Batman exploit, but Smash Stack is far easier (IMO) if you have Smash Bros.Brawl on hand, so I'd look at this guide for using that instead of doing steps 2-3 in the main guide: If you happen to have neither of those there are four more exploits listed in the guide.

General advice on safety measures
A lot of it is stuff you probably know about, but it never hurts to review this kind of thing in case you plan to do more with your vwii in the future. The main guide actually covers some of the safety measures listed in here (hence why this is listed second)

Nintendont thread, including installation guide: http://gbatemp.net/threads/nintendont.349258/

Actually installing Nintendont is super-easy (you just stick files on your SD card and rename them correctly). I recommend you have a Wii U Pro Controller unless you're dying to use a different controller. Nintendont is able to use the Pro controller right out the box so that removes the need to set up the controllers if you're playing solo.

Make sure to delete Smash Stack once you've done everything. (Or else if you try to play Brawl the console freezes at the stage select screen with a hideous screeching noise and the only way to fix it is to unplug the console.)

Hopefully that helps.

Can't wait to get going on some of this stuff, just got all my Gamecube stuff back from home. I'll need to try track down my old Wii for ripping.

Hey folks, is there any way we can move the Wii U / ripping conversation to its own thread? I don't feel like it really contributes to the collection or appreciation of the actual system.

I agree with this. It certainly has nothing to do with GameCube appreciation ;) (pretty much the opposite, in fact lol)
