Truly wonderful film.

When I went to japan a few years a ago I remember a lot of people were going to the ghibli museum near Tokyo and subsequent raving about it. At the time I'd never heard of them and am generally not into anime so I dismissed the idea without a second thought. Then last year I watched all their films and fell in love and am so gutted I didn't go. Oh well, hopefully I'll get another chance in a year or so.

P.S. Howl's Moving Castle is the best by Miyazaki but I'd probably go with Whisper of the Heart as my favourite of all

So it took way longer than initially planned, but i finally managed to make time to watch another Ghibli movie: howl's moving castle. Not surprisingly, I thought the movie was great.
If you're into reading, check out the book it's based on! Written by Diana Wynne Jones.

Yeah, the Japanese do a great job with making interesting worlds. Main reason why I watch anime over HBO shows or whatever.

Clothed, sober, cooperative
Much better visualization of dreams than Inception and its Call of Duty map.

Exactly captures the nature of my dreams, at least.

My first thread on GAF was also a Spirited away lttp thread. This movie is amazing. I liken it to Alice in Wonderland, but even more creative and stronger themes.

Oh, bitch bitch bitch.

I'd say Paprika is much better than either at capturing the nature of dreams. Which is why a few of Inception's more memorable scene are pretty much taken from it.

hot hot hanuman-on-man action
Fantastic movie, and you're in for a treat because you get to watch these classics for the first time:

When I started watching the movie, I wasn't really sure what to expect. I am not a huge anime fan and I had never seen a Miyazaki movie in my life. But boy, let me tell you GAF: This movie is fan-fucking-tastic. Normally I watch a movie from my list in two or three sessions, but this was one of the rare movies that I just couldn't walk away from.

So why do I think this movie is so good? Well, it is kinda hard to describe, the movie just feels magical.

This sums it up greatly for me when I first saw it.Especially since I wasn't a big Anime guy to begin with but this one really hit me. Animation, soundtrack, all of it. I know it's been nicknamed the japan/anime take on a "Alice in Wonderland" story but it never came across to me like that.

For some reason it always felt like the type of movie to come back to after a nice amount of time and not constant back to back viewings

It's the first Ghibli film I watched when I was a kid and is a great movie. I haven't watched all of Ghibli's films, but one of my personal favorites and that is not mentioned too much is Only Yesterday, I think it recreates the nostalgia feeling so right. But yes, go watch all the movies.

I've only recently started on the Ghibli films, (within the last 6 months or so), and it's really the only anime I've ever watched. I just watched Spirited Away as well for the first time maybe a week ago. Having watched about 6 Ghibli films before this, I can say with some level of certainty that Spirited Away may be my favorite. I still haven't watched Princess Mononke, Kiki's Delivery Service, or Whispers of the Heart (all of which I have sitting here), but other than Spirited away, my favorites are probably Ponyo and My Neighbor Totoro. I really love all of the one's I've seen though, including Castle In the Sky, Howls Moving Castle, Naussica, and Arriety, including the one's I've already mentioned. So, given the movies I have, what should I get next GAF? (Sorry for slightly off-topic)

I haven't seen much anime besides Ghibli either and I rank Spirited Away at the top closely followed by Ponyo and My Neighbor Totoro, so it seems we have similar tastes. I love pretty much every Ghibli film but I would I recommend Kiki's Delivery Service next as to me it feels the most similar to Spirited Away. Princess Mononoke reminded me of Naussica the most and is one of the best. Grave Of Fireflies is another one that blew my mind, but prepare for a more sombre film than usual. And while not a Ghibli film, Akira is highly recommended if you haven't seen it before - I saw it last year for the first time and I finally understand the hype.

So after all the advice about what to watch next, i made a list with roughly the order in which i plan to watch the rest of the Ghibli movies:

Spirited away
Howl's moving castle
Princess mononoke
Grave of the fireflies
My neighbor totoro
The Castle of Cagliostro
Porco rosso
Akira (Not a ghibli movie, but enough people recommended it)
Laputa: castle in the sky
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind
Ponyo (I actually saw the nostalgia critic review of this movie, so I kinda know the story already)
Arrietty
Whisper of the Heart
Kiki's delivery service
The wind rises
Pom Poko
The Tale of Princess Kaguya
Tales from earthsea (this one is apparently not good? still worth a watch?)
From Up on Poppy Hill
Only Yesterday
My Neighbors the Yamadas
The Cat Returns

Am I missing a couple or is this list OK?
Also, I will not constantly update this thread with my opinion on every single movie, but maybe I will make a new thread after I finished watching them all.

Castle in the Sky isn't on that list and should probably be pretty high up on it.

I made my way through most of them a couple years ago. Spirited Away is one of my favorite movies, and I saw it years before any of the others. Some were great, some not so much IMO. Solid list overall though.

My favorite Ghibli movie, hands down. It's magical, relatable, and does everything just right, without ever being in your face.
