DORITOS Presents: SONY vs. MICROSOFT 2014 THE HYPERBOWLLLLL

just think of how much xbox is ripping people off if it can slash its price from 500 to 350 in less than a year and still make profit.

i remember an article in 2010 when 360 was still selling for 250 and the cost to make one is 100.

Are they profiting though?

At this rate, I wonder if we can expect $250 by end of next year, maybe it'll be cheaper than the Wii U. The console is practically $299 now since it has a free game included.

Sony is laughing at the US, its a bonus to be winning against a US made console in their own territory.

Microsoft gave away a free game during destiny week, it did nothing, they delayed titanfall on 360 to sway people to buy an xbox one, it did nothing.

A bunch of halo remakes? c'mon now, think about it.

Sony dont need to do a damn thing.

they're willing to eat their losses as long as they get more consoles to homes this holiday.

they will make money back with their services and xbox live.

Two global companies, PS4 wasn't designed chiefly by Japanese people and XB1 isn't manufactured in the USA so this is all kinda pointless.

PS4 is winning because it's the better mousetrap. Sometimes things really are just that simple.

As said before in the August NPD thread.

If Xbox One gets outsold in November...

Perhaps Sony are stocking up for after the Playstation Experience? Something big is going to be announced so who's to say it won't be something that moves consoles?

You're completely undervaluing Halo: MCC. It wouldn't surprise me if it Meta's at 95 and sells a lot of consoles.

While I wouldn't go that far I think the constant discounts and bundles is going to make it extremely difficult for MS to go back to a standard $399 w/o Kinect and $499 w/ Kinect in 2015. These bundles and discounts have to be eating into their margins and over time ultimately their profits.

They definitely tried their hardest to make it seem that way though. Let's not forget the absolutely insane marketing push it received and the endless hype

Agreed.

______________

It was hyped as the second coming of Jesus Christ, and people (game media) speculated that it may well be so. It's only in hindsight that we can say it couldn't reach that level.

It thought it would be bigger than it actually was but I never thought it would be as big as COD (due to it being a new IP). So I was actually right back then in terms of the latter.

__________

BG, even though you have valid arguments, the bolded is kind of reaching isn't it, if anybody invested hard enough in Xbox wanted an Xbox One by now, they would already have bought one with the absolutely bonkers deals going on for the last few months.

Wouldn't say it's reaching -- especially when November and December will have more consoles sales than the previous months did.

There were many posts even here on these forums in which people said they would wait to see what MS does during these next two months (alongside Halo MCC) before buying one.

It's the opposite. Retail bundles are signs of demand dropping, hence the deal trying to clear stock.

Or it's to entice customers to buy a hot product at their place rather than the competitors.

Shipping 13.5M per end of September does not point to any drop in demand.

I think you're overvaluing it. It's honestly going to be hard determining how many consoles it ends up moving though, since we won't know whether people bought the console for the MCC or because of the price cut and multitude of promotions.

Either way, Nov and Dec are going to be the most interesting NPD months in a long while.

I'm not even gonna try to guess the sales numbers because I'll be way off, but I'll give my reasoning for why I think it's impossible for Sony to win November.

Surely you have some idea of numbers. I ask because PS4's September sales would indicate it's headed for 1 million+ in November. I don't think I've ever seen a console sell over 1 mil in November when Sept was under 300k which I think MS will have to do to outsell Sony.

the event in December is another way to keep mindshare. it could have the same effect as releasing a game, as in spur console sales for the holidays. announcing new stuff here will be an attempt at locking down a 12 month winning streak for the PS4.

They handily outsold MS last month when MS was giving a game away for free. Meanwhile the PS4 bundle with the same game was $50 more expensive. You'll see the usual Amazon black friday bundles.
That's actually a fairly good point. In fact, the Destiny bundle alone outsold all XBoxen combined, despite all of the deals on the latter.

That said, the Destiny bundle has been out for a while. Seems like they could use something fresher, even if it's at the same price point.

It'd be pretty funny if they started including the Camera for $400 though.

Minecraft PS4 and Vita Bundle.

It's going to happen.
I'm surprised neither console manufacturer has done a Minecraft-focused bundle. One of the biggest gaming brands right now, and it'd be an easy way to convince a kid to choose one over the other. Bundling the Vita as well would be clever, but I think $500+ would be too rich for that crowd. Either bundle Minecraft, LBP3, and the console for $400, or do a similar drop to $350.

Or, put together a MC-focused PS3 bundle.

Going by past years, aside from leaks, SCEA doesn't actually announce Black Friday/holiday bundles until like a week or two in advance.

None of the bundles had free games as huge as COD or Asssassin's Creed though. This is on top of this recent deal happening in a period in which many people are looking for a new console.

I would argue Madden + Destiny is comparable at least to Assassin's Creed, and would be closing in on CoD.

One thing I think people are over looking is that people are likely going to only buy one console for a gift either for their kids or for themselves. If the console is a gift for the kid cost and bundles is not that big of a deal really. Also the PS4 is likely on more people's wishlist because of the larger existing install bases and likely more friends, family, and coworkers own a ps4 already.

This is an effect the 360 enjoyed all of last gen and now is in the PS4's favor, and it can't be understated.

What does meta has to do with this?

It's Halo, old Halo games, we know what to expect.. Meta won't change a thing or surprise anyone.

Halo 5 on the other hand will be interesting.

If you're spending $350-$450 for a collection of old games you've played before years ago, odds are you made up your mind long ago that you were going to spend that $350-$450 on an Xbox One.

And if Metacritic scores meant anything than Destiny would have sold like shit and Rayman Legends would have been the best selling Xbox One title released so far.

There was rumour of a game being announced and launched this year. If it's a big game and Sony expects it to do well, wouldn't it be wise to stock up for the bundles as opposed to compete with MS in November? Losing one month is nothing in the grand scheme of things but having shortages when a heavily promoted game releases is not a good idea.

Regardless of who sells what, how will we know? Aquamarine is on a self imposed ban and creamsugar is not posting NPDs anymore from what I have read. So, with arguably the biggest holiday season around the corner, who is going to give up the numbers so we can have a good old fashioned meltdown thread?

There's a reason there is no retail copy of Minecraft on XB1 yet, it's coming soon.. It's gotta be.

By the way, store sold out of XB1's this weekend. .... It's beginning. .

If MS is #1 in november, they will be shouting from the rooftops. We don't have to guess.

All MS bundles are digital games AFAIK. Minecraft would be cheap pack in that would push more units than some other $60 game.

It's a good thing the majority of people on gaming websites don't run companies.

Losing a month in the US (because face it, they won't lose Europe/Japan/anywhere else) does not matter.

It's certainly not worth throwing away millions of dollars just to appease console warriors.

Xbox 360 lost some months in the US against PS3. Were all of you freaking out about what Microsoft must do when that happened?

I agree. Sony doesn't have to exactly do a damn thing just because "they might lose a few months." Throwing away millions of dollars just to please fanboys on video game forums like NeoGAF doesn't seem smart, especially given Sony's current financial situation.

Yeah, I guess but they would be a little biased I would assume. Factor in the whole shipped/sold through, lumping all systems together thing that MS has done in the past, I wouldn't feel OK with taking their numbers as gospel.

My guess would be 1.5m for xbox, like i said though it's probably way off, I suck at guessing these things.

GTAV + White PS4 at 399$ = November win for Sony.

If not, it will still be pretty close, but I doubt that Sony won't do anything. Black friday is a no brainer.

we might not get details but don't the manufacturers still issue statements if they sell the most during the month?

Example: MS has reps stand at the doors to stores and hands each customer a xboxone box and says doesn't that feel great to hold!?! Then takes it back and hands it to the next person. The following week, they release a press release that says, "Xbox One was in more hands this holiday season than any other console in history!

I'm being funny but also kind of serious.

NPD is going to be damn interesting in November. Either Sony plan on a big Black Friday overcoming Xbones lead or they are ok with losing 1 month. Either way PS4 has been doing fantastic so if they drop a month to Xbox no big deal.

If Microsoft don't manage to outsell PS4 in November with all the deals they're doing, then they're in a very shit position in the US.

PS4 is the defacto console in the US. It will sell more because it's what "everyone else has". XBONE is $50 less but little Timmy doesn't want XBONE, he wants PS4 because that's what his friends have/want.

And at the end of the day no matter how much the fanboys want to believe it, a bundle of four old games (2 from last gen) aren't going to floor buyers into buying the other console.

XBONE will survive fine and stay ahead of Wii U in the US by a little bit.. But the king has returned and an HD collection and a racing game isn't enough to change that, even at $50 less.
