GTA 5 - First Person Mode Confirmed, First Screens, Trailer, 4K on PC

One minor thing that I disliked in GTA V was how it would prevent you from seeing the full death animation. It quickly fades out with "Wasted". Look at what Skate was popular for... the crazy wipeouts. I've had moments where I was tumbling at an insane speed down a mountainside, but he died too quick for it to play out. I think instead of forcing the "Wasted" screen and cutting the fun short, they should have a button to where you can skip it if you want.

Anyone with me here?

"here, here!" I'm with ya.

Hopefully the frame rate is also improved over the PS360 version. I quit playing due to the headaches.

Hold up: what are they going to doing about having to mash X or A to sprint? That's irritating enough in third person but actually impossible in first person.

(Please no insane claw grip photos)

The game has a range of control configuration options, from what was already in GTA V to more traditional FPS controls (click left thumbstick for sprint) to make first person mode more intuitive.

Kind of bummed they didn't show any of the traffic density. All the footage was from missions and 4 wanted stars =/

I'm assuming its all according to plan though. We should be getting more official footage soon right since launch is not that far away?
I'm not sure sure how many denser traffic the game needs... huge portions of the game would look silly with denser traffic. I mean, Vinewood is already pretty dense, and the freeways or regular LA will always look better with bumper to bumper. But Vinewood Hills, Chumash, and especially Harmony, Grapeseed, Paleto, and Sandy Shores are going to look silly with 2x as much traffic.

I much rather have more car spawn variety, far less car despawn every time you turn the camera, etc than more cars.

GTA is missing something: a COP MODE. Imagine cop tailing you giving you tickets for excessive speed. Or how about this: You play as COP and able to give out tickets to citizens that violate traffic laws or report to crime scenes a la COP on TV shows. This will be in 1st person perspective (this will look awesome). Rolling around the streets w/ the song playing "Bad boy bad boy...watcha goin' do...whatcha goin' do when they come for you...." lol. That is sick!!

And what about buying gasoline for cars that run out of gas? I know what people will say...but GTA, you shouldn't be running out of gasoline. Again, how about make it so that ONLY rarely do you run out of gas? This way, it won't affect much of the gameplay but at least it's cool to have that option to buy gasoline at the stations. This makes the world more realistic and more lively. And you will see residents heading into stations lining up just to get gas or head into stores to get food. I have suggest this for way back God knows when but it never get implemented.
Mods would be your best bet for this. GTA IV already has a full fledged mod that works dynamically via 911 calls or just lay back and give out tickets/search/warrants.

Can't wait to run the 30 minute long triathlon in first person mode.

Didn't even think of that...that will be great. Same with the bicycle races, and general neighborhood bmx cruising.

Actually loved that triathalon, it was so arduous and hand tiring that I got some weird sense of athletic accomplishment when I won it.

V is a lot smoother than IV... the gunplay and cover is especially good. The driving is more just subjective, the controls are tighter, more responsive, and basically more arcade-ish.
Cool, thx. Shooting and driving in IV both drove me nuts. Definitely considering giving V a chance.

So the IGN guys said in their video that they have a week long exclusive articles on GTA V, also that the framerate was 30 most of the times with a few dips.

There was a mod that did something very similar, almost identical, to what you just described... even down to "Bad Boys" theme :)

That said, GTAIII, VC, and SA all had a vigilante mode where you had to dispatch criminals, but it was strangely dropped from IV and V. IV had a similar mode where you accessed a police computer and then went after criminals. GTAV has no suck mode.

These sorts of things have been considered for GTA games in the past, but they wouldn't improve the game world. Even GTAIV was rumored to force you to buy gas and even have more strict police who do not take kindly to you running red lights. But, ultimately, these things don't fit in with GTA. I don't get what benefit buying gas adds to the game world, just a nuisance. Nobody likes buying gas in real life. If you want to simulate this on your own, you could, but watching the mileage of your car and then driving to a gas station, sitting there for 3 minutes, and then driving away.

I feel this way about a lot of the design decisions in GTA Online. For instance, GTA Online requires you to buy car insurance for your car. The idea is, if your car is destroyed, you pay a deductible and then get your car back at the impound lot or somewhere similar. They take it to another level where if someone destroys your car and that user does not have any money or insurance, you have to pay for his insurance... for destroying your car. It's these kind of decisions that I don't even know how or why anybody sits in a meeting and says "Yes! We must replicate the auto insurance industry in our videogame!" I wonder why anybody ever thought it was a good idea to add this to a game.

I hated GTA IV so much that I completely ignored GTA V. Specifically, I hated the clunky mechanics of doing pretty much everything in the game. Question: is GTA V better/worse/different than GTA IV? Especially interested if anyone also hated IV but liked V.
Depends on what you're talking about. IV's combat and on-foot controls are shit compared to V. Straight up.

Driving is a bit more divisive. Some people preferred the weightier controls in IV, but it sounds like you didn't. If that's the case then you'll probably like V's driving.

The mechanics still mostly pulled straight from the PS2 era and feel really outdated if that is what you mean.
Huh? The PS2 trilogy controls pretty badly compared to V. Hard to imagine anyone finding them at all similar.

The downtown areas can often be ghost town looking compared to what a fictional LA should be, much less real life, especially with the wide 6-8 lane streets in this game. Denser traffic should be a huge push for GTAV and all open world titles this gen, particularly in areas where gridlock traffic would make sense like in front of city hotspots (like clubs at night), and big intersections. Would add a lot of life to the city and be another variable when you're being chased.

I'm also disappointed we didn't get any non-police chase footage to see what it looks like now.

I'm with you on this too. Would like to see the animations playout without fading so quickly. Was especially upsetting when you'd drop off a building and then hit a near by (but still deadly) floor and then you'd never see your guy ragdoll to the ground level, it'd fade out too quickly.

Yeah that was one thing I missed from even IV. I like being able to pan around and watch the death animation, crash, explosion in slow-mo.

I agree. There's a balance to be found, too much vehicles everywhere would hurt the gameplay : you need to be able to escape at a high-speed anywhere.

I would be happy to see more pedestrians, especially doing random activities everywhere, in the next open-world games. AC:Unity is trying to do it, with less glitches and pop-in it would be perfect and the previous GTA will look lifeless if R* and other open-world devs chose to work on that. This would be truly next-gen game design.

This sounds cool:

First-person options are bogglingly extensive, with options for Assisted Aim, Semi-Assisted Aim, Free Aim and much, much more. You can set first-person targeting with third-person cover, or third-person targeting with first-person driving... the choice is huge.

So you'll be able to tailor if/when you want 1st person view. Those who want to play in 3rd person normally but have 1st person in vehicles will have it automatically set for them so they don't have to switch back and forth manually.

I shocked everyone is excited for this feature.

Shocked!

its not the shooting neccesarily but the freedom to choose. I played Skyrim in a mix between first person and third person. Being able to change perspective increases the enjoyment of video games for me.

Not only that I am looking forward to playing a lot of the game in first person in vehicles, and third person in shooting. I will probably do some first person shooting to spice it up but mostly mix. inside buildings when the camera is restrictive or I want to look at the pretty 1440p textures, first person is fun!

First person looks great, however, I am concerned with how the driving will be with a mouse and keyboard. I am stoked though.

Sometimes i am ashamed of being a video game fan. All people care about is 60fps/1080p, even if the game is really damn good, people will talk crap because of the resolution and fps.

This sounds like someone who has forgotten how the PS2 era games played. :p

Playing any game from that era and the playing IV is a world of difference in character control, driving, and gunplay.

Dat traffic tho..

Always the peak of the PC versions, even if every 3D GTA release so far comes with a catch of problems exclusive to that platform. The fact San Andreas is getting fixes in 2014 should tell you Rockstar has been pretty bad on the platform at large. I hope GTA V is the end of that.

Yeah for sure but even a lot of those areas, sometimes you can already get close to bumper to bumper. It's not rare to get 30+ cars on screen on that 4 lane freeway through LS or get bumper to bumper in the main Vinewood stretch. Sometimes it's slow to spawn so many cars but other times you can close to bumper to bumper. But either way, whether it spawns faster or more consistently, any improvements will of course help.

I was more focused on the countryside and especially Sandy Shores, Harmony, Grapeseed, and Paleto. I mean by the RonOIL gas station you can already sometimes get 20-30 cars at that main junction with 15+ cars heading into downtown Paleto and it already looks a bit silly. Especially when it's like 5-6 trailer trucks. Sandy Shores with 2-4x much traffic is going to look so odd.

Hopefully it's not just a linear across-the-board traffic multiplier but they specifically tailor each areas' new traffic density.

And they really need to fix the car spawn system much more than denser traffic. I mean, instead of having 25 Ballers or Dubstas in Vinewood, now we'll have 50 Ballers? :p The spawn system needs far more work than denser traffic.

The problem with denser traffic is that you still need to be able to race through the streets in the game.

Realistic downtown LA traffic means you'd be going nowhere fast. That wouldn't work

Weren't the flawed car spawn system here because of the lack of memory in the old-gen hardwares ?
And there aren't that many different cars per area...but I guess they could better mix them up between the different districts and areas.

Looks like a new car on the right...

Basically the Bravado Buffalo wagon so based on a Dodge Magnum.

Edit: Actually it's just an Enus Huntley S, a DLC car.... thought it looked longer than it is. But on second-look, I recongized those wheels.

Confirmation that DLC cars spawn in traffic now at least!

Oh, definitely. I mean, that's why there were so few interiors, too. I mean, the PS3 could barely it 30 FPS as it was.. let alone with 2-3x as many car types and building interiors to also load.

But even on the PS3, the game can rarely load up up to 5-6x different cars in heavy traffic, and then inexplicably you'll get like 50 Grangers on the freeway in Blaine County for 3-4 minutes, or maybe a dozen Mesas in between for variety :p So there are times where it shouldn't be performance related and the coding is just making the same 1-2 cars spawn over and over. Which I'm sure is a byproduct of code that was restrained my last-gen memory but I don't think just raw extra power will fix it because part of it seems to just be bad code.
