It keeps telling my best buy that the gcu card is invalid and to scan again or something even when they scan it without the phone lol :(

GCU is only for Reward Zone members. You have to give them the RZ card (or phone number) first. Then it will work.

I just did this at BestBuy in Tempe Az. Got the last lg440g in stock and price matched it to radio shack. $5.43 out the door! Cant believe it. Even the lady who helped me was in shock. Thanks Gaf! Just saved a ton of money in the long run.

got the deal.
I was at the cashier
  • Cashier said: u know you should get the game to get the $30 discount
  • Me: no. I know there's a promo going on now.
  • Cashier: I don't know any other promo.
  • Me. Just scan the phone.
  • *scan*
  • Price dropped to 16.99 from 99.99. Guy's eyes pop open
  • Cashier: Hey do you know about this deal (to another cashier)
  • Female Cashier: Oh yeah Rob told me about that. Buy a prepaid phone get the GC free.
  • Cashier: Man what a deal. You still want a plastic for that phone or you're just going to throw it.
  • Me: nah. I'll keep it
I walked out with a smile

Is the price-matching LG 440G deal still going on? I was planning on going in for 4 more years tomorrow if everything's still going smoothly.

worked great in Pittsburgh. 4 years worth = 12 bucks. now i'm thinking I should have gone 6 but that would be 2020!

4 years locked in!

Although it took me longer than expected.

First they couldn't find the last 2 they had.

Then the associate didn't want to price match saying they don't price match RadioShack, so I went to customer service to find out what he is talking about.

They told me they do price match Radio Shack, then I planned to get this guy in trouble but I said to myself I work in retail and I wouldn't want this happening to me no matter the ignorance...

I had another associate ring me up and price match, he added my membership then scan the gamers club. He totaled it out and the surprise on the associates face when he said "It's...free..???"
I responded "Yup, a great promo right after I literally joined a few days ago, and now I'm stacking on 2 more years" and he responded "Cool, why not". Then I made a nice donation to St Jude's!

It should of been a 10 minute run if it weren't for incompetence, but it got done anyways and I left a happy best buy customer they will see business from in the next 4 years :)

Every time I go to best buy, the employees there have no idea what the hell I'm talking about. It's bad when I have to inform them of their own releases or promotions...

Question about pre orders on the Best Buy website. Do I have to pay on there with a credit card or can I just pay in store when I go to pick it up?

It seems to charge the majority, but not entire cost, for whatever reason.

I first had smash bros preordered without the gamers club, It charged me 52 dollars.
Then I cancelled that after I got the gamers club, and preordered the bundle.. it charged me 60 something (it totaled 80 bucks).

You can pay via credit card or paypal.

Glad that I came across this yesterday. I'd always ignored GCU until actually reading about the benefits. I woke up way earlier than usual and went and bought 4 phones (3 440g's and a Z222). So I'm good until 2022. I'm sure Best Buy won't exist by then, but I'll have my moneys worth well before that time arrives.

Thanks a ton, OP

Quick question from a new GCU member:

For every single new release I buy, does Best Buy always offer $40 back for it if I sell it back used within a couple weeks of release? Or is that only when they do the 50% extra promotion like the one that is going on now? I seem to remember some people basically using this as a rental service.

I'm sure Best Buy will still be around in 8 years, my only reservations will be with GCU and whether that will still be around and if it'll still have the same benefits. Or you also have to factor in digital releases and if they'll be more prevalent or maybe there will be a structural change where they're able to be offered cheaper, etc. There are a lot of things that can happen between now and 2022 unrelated to whether BBY is still around. It's a gamble, but for 5$ per 2 years, it's probably worth taking.

Does the 20% also work on Collector's Editions? How about accessories? And does the discount work on BestBuy.com?

at 5 bucks per 2 years, how is it a gamble? it pays itself off after 3-4 games

Works on all CE's of physical software, also works on disney infinity/Skylanders stuff and I believe Nintendo Amiibos

Don't think the 20% off works on controllers and other accessories in that sense though

Discounts work on bestbuy.com as well

At $5 per 2 years, it pays itself off with one game purchase at $60 MSRP [as you save $12]

Or were you talking about getting like 6 years of GCU? As that would only be 2 games then [at $60 MSRP]

I read like 10 pages and didn't see it asked. Do I need to bring a printout of it on Radio Shack's site?

Printout from radioshack.com would work although I just pulled it up on my phone and showed the cashier the page from that

Is there any particular order they need to ring up the items or will everything work when its all said and done?

For instance, do I need to have them first punch in my phone number, then scan the GCU, and then scan the phone?

You need your membership info entered and verified before the GCU is rung up otherwise it won't accept it.

Something like this

  1. Scan phone [pricematch with radioshack if applicable]
  2. Give cashier your phone number, they'll pull up your membership info, it will appear on credit card reader, confirm your details
  3. Then have them scan the GCU card

I've done the above twice at two separate BB's with two different model phones. Works fine

Thanks! Now all I need to do is see if my local Best Buy is cleared out of these phones.

Thanks for the info, I should had clarified with Radioshack price match, but you got me covered.

Potential issue - i don't have a basic best buy rewards card. Can I just sign up for that there? Can I sign up online and just give them my #?

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it yet or not, but women's shelters are often looking for cell phone donations if you're wondering what to do with your cheap phone.

How do I use my reward certificate online? I have 5 dollars in points and I don't see an option to apply the coupon.

You have to change the points into a rewards certificate then you'll receive the code that goes with the reward certificate and can apply that in checkout

Preordering things online at Best Buy can be hell. I preordered a Wii U there as soon as preordering was available and they charged my card $350 every other day for the entire time. Some people got their preorders cancelled or something because the constant charges were causing their banks to throw up red flags.

You know there's nothing shady about this deal, right? Lol. great story.

Oh, I know. It just feels like its too good to be true. I knew I wouldn't get in any trouble but I was more afraid some manager would refuse and not allow me to do it (regardless if corp allows it or not). Plus it was fun to write the pseudo spy story.

Thanks for all the love. Hope everyone enjoyed it.

Wow, that is some crap. I pre-ordered with Cash so luckily they could not do that with mine. I was thinking of pre-paying down Smash so I could get $10 off.
Edit: Not on the list, MCC then...

I'm assuming pre-ordering online at BB is like Amazon, they don't charge the card until you go pick it up in store? or when it ships?
