Splatoon singleplayer campaign announced

KingSnake

The Birthday Skeleton
All the demos done for this game at E3, Gamescom etc were with 8 Wii U stations and multiplayer. Unless someone thinks Nintendo will do an 8 players LAN party, this is definitely online.

Hopefuly there's more diversity in terrain and elevation for the arenas than what's been shown. If that's instead being given to the campaign levels, then I don't know where the team's priorities lay.

Have you played competitive games like Counter-Strike? GO overdid it with detail, objects like plants that work as cover and too uneven design in general which made for a worse experience.

You generally want to have a relatively small map with 3 choke points, nothing fancy going on. I think Splatoon has alot of very interesting terrain given the mechanics so that you end up having plenty of outs at any give time. That's how these games are interesting in multiplayer, not in creative level design (which you see in the SP part)

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
I am so freaking hyped for this game. Best part of the Direct right here.

Alright, watched the trailer back 6 times and I think I'm finally starting to understand. It looks so good; I love the style. I'm glad to see it looks like a deeper package than it did at E3, too.

Yes I've played online shooters. I didn't say over-detailed, I said diversity (i.e. layout asymmetry). Rest assured, I would hate to play the equivalent of GothicDM where everyone gets stuck on the least predictable elements. And there's a good traversal mechanic for getting between hotspots, maybe allowing for larger maps than what's been demoed.

First I thought this game was a bit too shallow despite fun as a multiplayer game. Then I knew Nintendo wouldn't make a game like it, and today they delivered an even better and complete game.

The definition of front-butt.
Don't forget guys, it's not just flat arenas for multiplayer. In the intial reveal at e3 we saw an oil rig level that's slanted. Not to mention the main urban map that was played on had tons of high points on top of the dominant flat ground.

The platforming / diving aspect seems rather unique, and would be a huge missed opportunity if it isn't integrated into the campaign levels. But I just don't know how much time and resources they are devoting to the campaign. Is it just a quick response or something intricately planned?

Oh I see where you're coming from. That, I don't think anyone can say but EAD. For me though as long as it feels fleshed out when I play it, I won't care if they rushed to add it or planned from the beginning. From what we see in the trailer though it looks like thought was put into it, tons of interesting mechanics and puzzles.

Nintendo exclusives really are something special.

Very very cool stuff this year from Ninty man...need more $$ -_-

Hope my PS3 trade-in can get me somewhere, at least a 3DS or something.

naaah it's 8 player local, just like Smash

8 players online should be the goal, and I don't remember Nintendo saying online was out. Encouraging local play is a must for them still.

...The entire selling point of this game is the online. IIRC Iwata even said that

Far from saying online was out, the online is the focus. The E3 press kit even billed the game as an online shooter.

he literally said online in the direct

and at E3

People really need to watch the Teehouse live.

This game looks incredibly fun! This is definitely my favorite art style out of any Nintendo IP in years, if not ever. Everyone needs to bring new IP like this!

It's also nice to see a little bit more diversity in the Inklings than in the E3 build. I know some people were concerned.

Yeah.

Regarding the recent discussions and topics in videogameland i thought it would be a much bigger deal around here to see Nintendo(!) doing a new IP where you can shoot things playing as a black female.

Edit: Btw.. if you want Nintendo characters, consider this:

Its a pretty sure bet in game with highly customizable outfits.

Anyone know if this game will use remote and nunchuck as a method of play? I'm interested, but I don't play dual analog shooters.

God fucking dammit I want this so damn bad.

It's funny seeing some of the comparisons, some people saying how Nintendo-like this feels while others say it doesn't look like the sort of thing they'd make at all. I personally think that fits their operating structure to a T, though; already the base designs of the inklings and the tentacles are so solidly established, and you can see the iconography of both of them fitting into the game world and easily expanding beyond that. The octopus-tentacles ("Octacles," dare I coin?), with their wide eyes, big mouths, and odd tiny human-proportioned legs already feel just as memorable to me as the Inklings themselves, and it shows in the fact that you can instantly recognize it from the face-cube boss.

Bosses! We've seen that the Octacles have a penchant for using machinery, so I have to imagine that there will be at least one major encounter that involves splattering ink up the sides of a huge mechanical monster and scaling your way up to its top. Kind of like Super Mario Galaxy meets Shadow of the Colossus.

Even if the initial idea of the game was spawned around the multiplayer wall-covering mechanic, seeing this trailer gives me the hope and feeling like this development team encountered something similar to EAD Tokyo did with how they approached Mario Galaxy and Mario Galaxy 2; once the core of the game was established, more and more ideas of how to make use of it just keep coming out as a natural progression. Especially with something like Splatoon, a completely new IP, with all-new settings and characters, and no preconceived notions of what fans of the series should expect, they are completely free to throw any and everything into the game that they think is cool and can fit into it prior to launch time. That is an unbelievably exciting prospect to me.

Also the drum track in that trailer is fucking infectious. I had a big dumb grin on my face the whole video, even if I was hardly trying to pay attention to what was actually happening. The game's overall style is already that cool, quirky, and just plain good, and now that the Octacles have been shown off to counter the Inklings, I expect those fanart fires to really start coming out again.

Of course. The reason the game is so difficult to show around is because the standard multiplayer, being online-oriented, requires a console per person.

My heart has been hurt one too many times in the past assuming a Nintendo game has online, glad to hear it's a core part of Splatoon. I've only seen the launch trailer and this campaign trailer too so I'm sure I missed the mention of online.

This solves my biggest problem with Splatoon, and it's doing what I suggested back at e3...but it's even better than I could've ever imagined.
It looks a bit like sunshine 2 but mixed in with Mario Galaxy and a 3rd person shooter. Looks sooo good.
Shame that Sakurai couldn't put Inklings in Smash, would've really helped the series take off once it comes out.
I wonder if the game will have Amiibo support. I think Nintendo costumes like in MK8 would work

Wow I was intrigued by splatoon before but this trailer knocked my socks off. Looks really polished already and the so looks incredibly fun and creative. I'm hyped.

Not sure what you're trying to say here. I know about the Wiipad controls. I'm more interested in whether or not we'll be able to play with the remote and nunchuck. If it's dual analog only, then I won't be picking this up.

I am trying to answer your question about the controls. Its gyro assisted dual analog. There won´t be any Wiimotes just because the map on your gamepad and the quicklaunch is an integral part in playing this game. Might be different for local coop - if there is any.

Thanks. I was hoping that wasn't the case. Oh well. Maybe they'll add it in before the game is released.

It actually might be even better. You have the pointing with the gyro, and adjust it with the analog. You might have a disadvantage by going Wiimotes only.
