Splatoon singleplayer campaign announced

Translation:

Looks like we have our plot. (I was just in the middle of working on a possible story analysis too, gosh darn it).

I was wondering what was up with those screen. Although, I think there are a few shots with the Octopus' above ground/on stages with no screens so maybe they breach the surface at some point?

So not exactly aliens, but basically aliens.

Theory time: The multiplayer is a training facility for the Squid Army preparing for the inevitable battle against the Octopi Army, which is why the teams are labeled as "good guys" and "bad guys." There being a Squid Army would also explain why the old squid looks like a commander of some kind.

That image looks really phenomenal. Loving the plot too, kinda makes me think of all those funny theories and cartoons talking about mole people constructing machines underground and stuff.

Someone made an analysis of the trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CfZnKtx-_FQ
Some stealth elements are apparently in the game. Sneak up on the tentacles by going up to them while swimming in the paint. They'll get alerted to your presence when you pop out.
Also, the game's collectibles (the red spheres) seem to be fish eggs. I'm guessing you can use that to buy stuff to customize your inkling in multiplayer

Oh I completely missed the fish egg collectables, haha. Also for some reason I thought the meter on the top left of the screen was your ink-dicator, but it's for health.

Also, that enemy in the shield appears to be the same as the one in this shot:

tumblr_nellqlnL8A1t6jvvlo6_1280.png

I count 5 multiplayer stages shown so far:

-Oil Rig
-City Scape (i.e. the one that was playable at E3)
-Side-streets
-Boardwalk
-Skate Park

Anyone notice any others?

that enemy kind of looks like Weepingbell

Before the trailer started in the direct, I was telling a friend I was watching the Direct with as soon as we saw the title-card for Splatoon that I hope the game has a giant Kraken or Cthulhu monster in the game.

I'm still hoping for this, but with the tentacle enemies and the campaign mode it seems far more likely now.

Haha they are really excited with their twitter account arent they?
Hope they keep showing small things like this as the game comes along. Kinda like Sakurai in a way :p

The official Twitter just posted this
B1zs0ldIQAIP7nI.jpg:large

Nothing surprising, but for completion's sake:

ZL - Squid (dive into ink, restores ink)
L-stick - move

R-button - Bomb (uses 70% of your ink)
ZR - Ink Shot (uses up ink)
R-stick - looks left/right
X - Jump
Y - Camera Reset

Touch the Squid Icon to make a big jump to one of your team mates.

Use gyro to aim.

I'm thinking the momentum of Mario Kart 8 --> Super Smash Bros. U ----> Splatoon with the online gameplay, DLC concent, and Amiibo support is going to be an admirable invocation for several gamers to invest in the system.

Side note, I think it would have been great for Nintendo to finally incorporate system-wide "accomplisments" with the advent of these games. Would have really been great for competitive / completionist gamers.

Really lame if it doesn't support Wiimote + Nunchuk controls. The control scheme would be easy to replicate and would be much more effective and comfortable with pointer controls and a split controller setup. For the map warp they could have you hold a button (minus?) to overlay a map on the screen and point at the teammate you want to warp to.

Sample control scheme:

Z - Squid (dive into ink, restores ink)
Nunchuk joystick - move

C - Bomb (uses 70% of your ink)
B - Ink Shot (uses up ink)
D-pad left/right - looks left/right
A - Jump
D-pad down - Camera Reset

Hold minus to overlay map, point at the Squid Icon to make a big jump to one of your team mates.

Use pointer to aim

Well, who's to say they won't add more control schemes? The game is at least 5 months away. That is more than enough time to add a LOT to the game, including different control schemes. I'm getting the feeling that this game is going to be larger than what some people are expecting. Though, I could be wrong of course.

This will be a long post analyzing the content in the trailer. Gaffers and some youtubers (and the official twitter! nice) have covered a lot of it probably but I'll go for it anyway. Maybe I spot something no one has.

Multiplayer

In the front and pic 2 we have a clear shot of the sniper rifle. Seems functionally the same from the previous trailer. Long range, precise with laser pointer, and probably low paint output. On the right is the paint roller. In pic 3 the squid boy shows off a new move: a jumping paint roller smash. This is probably a good way to avoid being shot in close quarters if your opponent sees you, jumping into the air away from their previous aim then coming down with the killing blow. It might also be used to paint walls so the roller isn't confined to the ground level. On the left is the familiar super soaker machine gun, looks unchanged.

The left inkling is holding a new weapon. I think the closest relevant item it resembles is a motorized spray paint gun. I first thought it looked like a nail gun but that wouldn't make sense. Maybe a close range quick-firing SMG-alike. On the right is another new weapon which looks to be a combination of a fishing pole and a spray bottle. In pic 2 you can see it has a laser guide like the sniper rifle which confuses me. I'm thinking it might be a semi-fire medium-long range weapon 'cause I don't see the need for two sniper rifles. Maybe it's something surprising though, like shooting a fishing hook and line.

On the left is a big ol' paint brush. Very stylish too, not like the obvious tear drop shaped brush. It's definitely inspired by the crazy big brushes they have in Japan (are they ceremonial? used to paint big signs back in the day?). It would be cool if this was like an ink sword, cutting your unique strokes on the battlefield. It could also be motorized, spinning into a circular blade or just whipping ink everywhere. edit: Looking at it again the metallic cone-shape connect to the brush looks like a paint tube, cool. So it's probably not motorized.

The grenade has undergone a a change, it's no longer a mechanical tetrahedron frame with flashing lights as a timer. Now it's a spherical ink blob that seemingly explodes on impact. Upon closer inspection of my screencap I noticed a little knot on the top, it's a freaking water balloon now. Awesome.

This inkling was able to generate a spherical forcefield that blocks all inkcoming shots. It's probably one of the special weapons you can acquire after building up enough points.

This new Boardwalk stage reminds me of a summer camp. It looks very open with the lack of walls like the Oil Rig. Seeing as water is in the out-of-bounds areas I take it inklings will dissolve if they fall in.

I forget who suggested it in the E3 thread, but look! The Skate Park is actually in the game! It definitely fits the style of Splatoon. The map appears to be very narrow and straight across. Also it seems they showed it at E3 but no one really picked up on it. In pic 2 that's the same wavy ramps and outdoor shopping mall they showed, but now it's more obvious it's a skate park. So to StreetsAhead, it looks like "Skate Park" and "Side-streets" are the same level.

So the known multiplayer maps are:

City
Oil Rig
Camp Boardwalk
Skate Park

This took a while to put together. I'll do singleplayer later. But one more thing:

kJIEdKN.png

The cat ref. What is up with him? Even in this comic panel I can't tell what he's doing. So mysterious.

Nice analysis! I like that there's a variety of weapons here, even if they're mostly 'standard' types.

Something I missed on the official Twitter, but they said that someone other than them (the 'Squid Research Lab') is researching the Inklings. Maybe it's the octopi? Or maybe the cat?!

I think it's the Octopi since you quoted them here:

Here's a translation

Investigative Report from the Squid Research Lab. This cat is the referee who decides the winner of each match. They can determine who has the largest covered area in an instant. But why is there a solitary cat in this world of squid....? This mystery is yet to be solved.

The SRL is also wondering about the cat.

Use gyro to aim.

All sounds good except for the bolded part. Have we had any official confirmation or hands on reports of not having to wave around the controller to aim? Because if that's the only option that's a deal breaker for me.

Seriously, sod gyro controls.

I'm sure Nate or someone turned off gyro a couple of times on the fly during the E3 live streams.

EDIT: Yep, see this part of the video he has gyro off and turns them on using the L button during the match.

I assume it's optional since I'm assuming other controllers can be used.

As for launching, maybe other controllers can use the minus button to show a map, and you can quickly move your cursor to where you want to launch.

Doesn't read OPs, especially not his own
it just seems forced not to include mario characters in this game. instead we get bunch of generic characters in a mario style game.

now if they make a game resembling Assassin Creed/CoD/RE/FF/MGS, then no, mario characters don't fit. But splatoon? Perfect fit!

You're trolling, cant think of any other reason.

I love the aesthetics and art direction of this game, and the gameplay mechanics are very interesting.

Its hitting all the high notes for me.

Most anticipated game after Smash for me.

Also love the music for both trailers. Can't wait for the full soundtrack.

Really like how Splatoon is shaping up. Looking great.
Anyway. New tweet and screenshot:

イカ研究所からの調査報告だ。 ヒーロースーツを身につけた主人公が進むのは地下の世界。イカの世界の侵略を狙う「タコ軍団」が作ったものらしい。巨大なモニターに映し出された青空から、タコ軍団の地上へのあこがれを感じるのは私だけだろうか?

Man this pic is awesome, loving this game already. :D

Can't wait for it, I hope Nintendo makes more of this awesome stuff. :)

they are optional, but in any case they are also great if used in an integrated way with the analog stick. no wave around, they simply add another input that could be great if used together with the analog sticks.

That's the best usage actually, as if you need to turn or move quick you use the analog stick and for aiming you use the gyro. It works particularly well in this game because you shoot paint, so slightly moving left-right and up-down to splash around feels really well and in my opinion provides a better control.

Wait, so the plot is basically Gears of War? I find that highly amusing.

Creatures that resemble the surface species are fed up with underground life and invade the surface.

Yep, at least the demo I played ..."played" pretty good with that setting.

btw, I like the Twitter approach they are showing: it is so "deep and detail" but not too serious at all HAHAH

Quick question; the real-time updating map that shows the ink layout of the game goes where in this? Having the map be a toggle (or worse, a hold to access) ruins a part of the strategic element of the game by making you pause to check it rather than glance down quickly while playing...
