Splatoon singleplayer campaign announced

The definition of front-butt.
The reticle could be either an optional aiming guide or pointer controls, it's hard to tell.

Kinda OT, but it's a performance art thing, as far as I know there's no cultural background to it other than, well, being calligraphy. It's a relatively recent phenomenon that's popular particularly with a high school age audience and often done to pop music, so it's pretty appropriate that the Inklings would use something based on it.

I see, thanks for the explanation.

To be honest, along with project STEAM, it kind of feels like someone at NCL gave an executive order to crank up the western iconography to eleven. Not that I'm complaining, but it does seem like a deliberate attempt to appeal to foreign markets.
Yeah, I noticed this. In Splatoon's case, though, you still have some of that off-kilter Japanese wackiness. It's the seasoning in a stew primarily made of Western imagery. It works really well, IMO. Kind of like how Demon's Souls/Dark Souls borrowed heavily from medieval high fantasy but still had a certain "something" to it that perhaps can be attributed to its Japanese developers.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
I seriously hope Splatoon becomes one of those big Nintendo franchises, one way or another. It just blasts you with the creativity behind it and its personality.

That new trailer was awesome, this game has so much personality I love it. Can't wait for more info. Also, love how this new Splatton thread is still going.

So we now know from the Splatoon Twitter that the members of the Octopus Army Corps (translation of Japanese name) live underground, in facilities where giant LCD screens depict blue skies. They wish to take over the surface world where the Inklings live. And we know from past interviews that the Inklings play "paintball" with each other for sport. So at the beginning of the trailer, when they show surveillance footage of the Inklings engaged in their sport, this must be the Octopus Army Corps spying on them before the invasion.

I like the variety of enemies we've seen so far. We see octopi in ink-spraying mobile suits (which they control with a joystick using their tentacles). Others roll around in the ink, and fly around and drop ink-bombs. Some have riot shields and can only be attacked by sneaking up from behind. There are torpedo-shaped robots that home in on the Inklings and explode, and a huge dousing machine that sprays enemy ink, like the platforms at a carwash.

There are also masked ones that are taller and more slender than the other octopi. They're decked out from top to bottom in black armor. I'm not sure how they function. Their lips are pronounced, so perhaps they're stationary snipers.

I wonder if there'll be any huge bosses. Either way, I'm pleased with the variety of enemies and the platforming gauntlets they patrol, which remind me of the FLUDD-less levels in Super Mario Sunshine. Game is going to be FUN!

Ah, OK. Cool image, though. I know Iwata said Splatoon's story centers around nature's conflict with octopus and squid, but to be honest I didn't know those two species didn't get along well. With so many arms, they should hug each more and fight less. :-3

I'm pretty sure that's not wii pointer controls, but the gryo aiming. You move your camera with the sticks but you aim with the gyro.
I guess it could be wii pointer controls, but not necessarily.

No, gyro and stick work the same way. The stick is regular control and the gyro is fine control. If you've played OoT 3D or Wind Waker HD then you know what it's like. No reticle involved.

Not sure if anyone has noticed it yet, but it seems like it looks more impressive than it did at e3. Some nicer lighting, higher polygon models and better textures. Looks closer to MK8 now which is pretty good since MK8 looks amazing. Might just have to do with the less bland environments shown, I guess.

I downsized my two favorite screens and combined them into one image:

splatoon-newip01jpg4xsco.jpg

Look at all of the character in that image.

I love the hipster/skatepunk heroes and emo villains.

I love how the world is styled after California skateparks/boardwalks.

Based EAD has blessed us with a new IP!

I'm seriously loving the dark skin Inkling on the far left. I'm glad they took it a step beyond "anime tan" for character customization's sake.

When the Inklings pop out of the ground (still covered in paint) they retain the cone shape in their head for like a second. That's kind of neat

Agreed! It's incredibly refreshing to see so much diversity. :)

Where are the full sized images from?
I don't remember where I got them from, but I've uploaded them to abload.de for your convenience -- click each image to see it at full size:

This game is the most surprising new IP I've seen in a long time. It already had my attention with the MP stuff shown at E3 but this SP media looks even better.

Has kind of a Tim Schafer vibe going on with the artstyle too.
You guys just can't do this to me.

If Splatoon has Wiimote pointer controls...

All I ever wanted during the Wii generation was something as funky as this with pointer controls.
Um... was this dude OK because he doesn't look OK :{

Man this looks so much fun! So glad i bought a Wii U for the Bayonetta 2 launch.
If you bought a WiiU for Bayonetta 2 (my favorite game on the system), I'd also recommend you try Tropical Freeze, since like Bayonetta 2, it has amazing controls with excellent feedback. Give it a go while you wait for Splatoon. :)

If you mean using the analog stick, that was already possible in the demo at Gamescom.

I'm all for non-analog-stick aiming. The Wii remote is incredible when implemented properly.

However I'm wary of holding the gamepad up... does it have to be up at like chest level as if you were using a camera? I can't possibly imagine that being at all comfortable. With the wii remote I'm able to rest my forearm on my thigh and use very small wrist movements. Even that can be slightly uncomfortable at times, but it's worth it.

Holding the full gamepad up (or best case, having arms in lap and just tilting it with wrists) will be more uncomfortable than Wii remote aiming.

I guess I'll have to use it firsthand, but I'm wary of this.

Wow, have you never played any game with relative gyro aiming?

You don't have to hold the GamePad "up like a camera" ...you're not pointing at anything! Have you played Skyward Sword at least? The way the bow-aiming worked, it's like that. You don't have to point at the screen, it's in relation to wherever your arm is. You move your wrist(s) a bit and that's it. It's like a mouse. Don't think of it like IR aiming. That's completely different.

EAD and SPD development staff (not producers though) transfer quite often. But I actually think the SPD development sector was mostly dissolved into EAD and SDD during the past year. I am not sure yet.

I'm not sure how Sakamoto's small development group was restructured amid all the shuffling.

Ah, thank you. I just assumed they were talking about producers/higher up people on the teams (like art director), but this is good to know. I thought the teams weren't dissolved until June, but if it happened earlier, it would make sense for them to be involved.

If by 'neat' you mean 'horrifying' sure. :p

I hope you're able to change the design of the hero character. The squid boys are pretty cool and cute as well.

That said, I really, really like how they're repping the female inkling over anyone else. Loving the inclusivity.

The trailer shows both a female and a male character wearing the hero suit.

At Gamescom I was standing up in front of the TV and holding the Gamepad down almost with my arms fully extended because the lock cable was making it very heavy and difficult to hold it up and I played perfectly even like this. You the the big moves and turns with the analog stick and the fine tuning by tilting the Gamepad in the position you're holding it. Works really well in Splatoon. You have the best of both worlds, speed and precision.

I don't see why anyone wouldn't want to use a cursor. Would help greatly.

I think if the Wiimote controls are like CoD's, then it would be perfect. Just have a box in which the cursor can move freely without moving the camera. CoD allowed you to adjust the size of the box as well as sensitivity and turn speed. I don't imagine they would offer the vast customization options CoD had, but if they just have a similar system in place, it would be amazing.

Wouldn't it be cool if the color you choose is the color that is always shown for your team on your end? What I mean by this is this:
- My friend and I are on the same team
- My favorite color is blue, his is orange
- Our team color would show up as blue for me, for my friend, it would show up as orange

I feel like the main reason for that is the female inkling has the two ponytail squid tentacles hanging out. Female inklings have a more squid like appearance compared to the male inklings with their tentacles tied up.

hopefully this game supports more than one player(?) a player on gamepad/one on tv would be awesome.

I know gamepad is map though

Now do it with Zelda, Nintendo.

Hasn't Zelda
- Had European/Western looking villages
- Japanese influence in its spirits, enemies, character design, and more
- Middle Eastern influence in Gerudo's and other stuff
- And in general different atmosphere's and themes like comparing TP to WW

Not really sure about African and South American influence.

-Well, does that Hand drumming boss count as African influence?
-Then there was kind of ship/pirate stuff in SS
-Was that boss with a lot of hands in SS based off a Hindu god? I may be wrong, but I feel it's something.
-And the Kokori's are kind of based of Peter Pan right?

Anyway, all that to say, I feel Zelda kind of already does it.

On the gamepad and it also shows the location of your teammates.

I meant in the hypothetical controller scenario that rjc571 was proposing.

When you consider the fact that you won't change where you look if the map were to be a toggle on the main screen, it wouldn't really make as significant of a difference as you're claiming. I can also see them including a mini-map on the main screen just to accommodate for other control schemes like how Mario Kart 8 does it.

I can only see a mini-map being implemented for an asymmetrical co-op scenario, and I can't see how that would work well with a 4 vs 4 online match-up rather than a 1 v 1 local like we're supposed to be getting. But since we don't actually know anything about that yet, It's all up to speculation •_•

The definition of front-butt.
They added a lot to the game.
At this point. Who knows what local multi will end up like?
What kind would people want to see most?

1 vs 1
2 vs 2
1 vs 2-4 Asymmetric game mode
Free For All 3-5

Can use a combination of gamepad and tv or just tv depending on the mode and player preference. Any graphical downgrade within local modes to make this possible is fine, except 60fps of course. Buuuut based on what was said at E3 it sounds like they've only considered(maybe prototyped) a 2 player vs mode so far, so I won't get my hopes up.

I think a hide and seek mode would be a lot of fun. If it's local, you could do it Mario Chase style, with the Gamepad player hiding while the others seek.

Maybe the Gamepad squid wouldn't have a designated color and could blend into any color ink. But they couldn't blend instantly, so spraying one color on another, you could reveal them, and then it becomes a chase.

Who knows, but I think this game can have a lot of different game modes that aren't in traditional shooters.

No matter how good the game looks or how interesting the mechanics are, I'm always left with one final opinion on the game: It is going to tank, hard.

When this game tanks, it's going to be a sad day indeed.

Why waste your time with this? Get hype. If you're going into all games not attached to huge brands or riding success trains then that's just sad. Celebrate actual greatness, forget business BS!

Not really sure about African and South American influence.

The dead Ikana civilization in Majora's Mask had Mesoamerica/South American influences

We can hope it becomes a cult classic and gets attention a couple console generations down the line?
Or from future's version of kickstarter
