Watch Da Birdie

I buy cakes for myself on my birthday it's not weird lots of people do it I bet
I don't agree with PM...

Not that I even care for it, but being a mod with infinite potential, of sorts, I don't think you can say it can ever be rendered obsolete.

So, here are some scattered impressions/thoughts for ya'll based on 10-15 hours of play time:

- Blast zones definitely do feel smaller
- The game still feels just ever so slightly faster to me than the 3DS version (but it's very minor)
- Not sure if anyone's noted this in possible character changes for the new patch, but the flowerpot looks like it goes a decent bit farther in Villager's dash attack
- The Wii U Pro Controller is pretty damn decent for Smash, as it turns out. It's still no GameCube controller, but I won't mind having to use this if/when GCN controllers aren't available
- The Wii U GamePad is also a decent control solution, neither as good as the Wii U Pro Controller nor unplayable
- The Wii's original Classic Controller still sucks for Smash
- Maybe it's because I haven't used a GCN controller yet, but being good at Brawl definitely does not translate to being good at this. I was able to wreck shit in Brawl, but I'm considerably worse at and getting kicked around a lot in Wii U (and 3DS)
- I've not seen the framerate dip even once during gameplay, but it does stutter quite noticeably in at least two other instances: 1) when the game is paused and you're moving the camera to take a picture, and 2) when you're rotating and zooming in on/out of particularly effects-heavy trophies
- Load times are mostly quite snappy (surprisingly so), with the occasional uncomfortably long load time thrown in there randomly
- On Hard difficulty, some Events can be unfairly brutal - and even on Normal, some of them aren't a cakewalk
- I haven't found Smash Tour to be compelling or very fun at all; to be quite honest, I would have rather had an online, HD version of Smash Run, and that's saying something
- Had a bunch of friends and fellow journos over last night to put it through its paces, and we generally agree that it's the definitive Smash experience and that there's no reason to go back to Brawl, Melee or PM (YMMV on this of course, especially if you only like Melee/PM)
- What Sakurai said is true: Challenges are definitely harder in the Wii U version. I've already seen several that I think are going to take serious effort to accomplish, and you only get five hammers in the Wii U version to boot, as opposed to nine in the 3DS version
- Not sure if it's just how I've been playing, but characters and stages seem to take a lot longer to unlock in the Wii U version. I still don't have Mr. Game & Watch and only got R.O.B. and Dr. Mario last night
- I have yet to see a single CD appear, though I do have items set to low, so maybe that's why
- Having the item frequency setting back makes all the difference; they appeared too frequently on 3DS, but "low" and "normal" here feel great to me
- I've spent way, way too much time in My Music already
- The graphics are just insane, even seeing it at various shows doesn't do it justice. When you're actually playing it in your own home, it's just amazing

I will, of course, link you guys to my full review once the embargo lifts. :) And to reiterate, if anyone has any more questions that I'm allowed to answer, I'll try my best to do so!

Awesome. I stopped playing Melee once Brawl came out. I play 64 more than Melee. Never cared for a mod game as well.

That's exactly what I wanted to hear. SO excited! And, like you, I know I'll be spending an absurd amount of time fiddling around in My Music and listening to all of the glorious new arrangements. I don't know if unlockable music is covered under the embargo, but let me know what you think of the hidden tracks--one you finally get your hands on a CD in-game, that is. ;) Really hoping for some hidden Mother music!

Noooooooo I need my Duck Hunt now. :( Speaking of which, are you allowed to discuss the methods for unlocking hidden characters? Is it just the standard "play X number of VS matches" or do you actually have to complete specific events, etc.?

I'm definitely going to play lots of PM for the foreseeable future thanks to all the Alts and character changes (Ganondorf hype too strong), but I'm also mad hype for 4.
It's gunna be great having 2 awesome Smashes to play.

I feel like if you buy this game and don't buy a Gamecube adapter with it you're a joke. ;)

But seriously, I'm glad I pre-ordered mine on Amazon a while ago. They seem to be hard to pre-order now.

Yeah. basically everyone around me thinks they will be done with Smash 4 after a few months, half of them already stopped playing it for either Melee or PM.

I can't stop playing For Glory in Smash 4 because it's so much fun, but it definitely doesn't have the depth that Melee or PM have. Not only because it lacks movement options but because combo moves and kill moves seem much more defined they they are in the other two. Like Sakurai wanted people to use moves for specific things and nothing else.

I don't mind it, but the more creative players definitely have a problem with it.

My personal opinion: HYPE LEVELS MAXIMUM!!!!!!

Just think that you're under estimating the differences between Melee/PM and Smash 4.

tl:dr
I think you're wrong, Melee is the best, but yeah, Smash for Wii U looks awesome.

Well, that's exactly why I said the Melee/PM lovers won't agree with that. For the rest of us, there doesn't seem to be a reason to go back. I've never had even half the fun with Melee and especially PM that I've already had with Wii U (and 3DS), and the new games only serve to highlight even more everything that's wrong with Melee/PM. But again, that's all subjective and up to each individual player. I'm certainly under no illusions as to the idea of Wii U/3DS appealing in the long run to the Melee crowd; of course it won't.

No, I can't talk about any unlock methods for anything unfortunately. Strangely, though, I unlocked Duck Hunt fairly quickly, so you should be good there (though again, that might differ depending on how you play). As for hidden Mother music, I'll keep an eye out, but I suspect it'll just be any Brawl Mother music that isn't already available by default.

Yeah, this makes me sad, I might have to just buy an adapter separately. :(

I literally have like 8+ controllers in my house so I'm not to worried about the controller, but a free controller is a free controller.

Edit:

I seriously think Melee is close to a perfect game, if it could just be balanced so the entire roster was playable at a competitive level it'd be as good as a game could ever be. In the competitive sense. Obviously it could always use more events, characters, etc, but who cares about that stuff when it comes to the fundamentals.

You save $20 if you just buy the game and adapter separate. That's what I'm doing!

Hard? Got my bundle preordered for release day at Best Buy earlier today, for only $80. Seems pretty damn easy.

Not with GCU!

On that note, a lot of people have been saying amiibo are really difficult to find for pre-order now, but I just ordered Kirby, Yoshi, Fox, and Link yesterday on Amazon for release-date delivery with no problems.

pssst Ash, is there any 3rd party trophies besides rayman and commander video?

I can't answer anything regarding trophies, sorry.

Did you try Smash Tour with friends/people? I'm curious how it works as a Mario Party alternative for party nights where we don't feel like playing Smash in the standard way. (Which is basically what I thought Smash tour was for... but not sure.) Pity no single-player special mode though, unless I missed something?

I may finally move past N64 Smash then, we'll have to wait and see.

I think I made a massive mistake not preordering this game and everything I want with it earlier. I'm buying the game (goes without saying), but Amazon has been showing unavailable for the bundle with a GC controller adapter and a controller for a while. So now today I figured I'd order the adapter and controllers separately, but now those are unavailable as well.

I want the game + two controller adapters + 8 of the Smash Bros branded GC controllers. I'm screwed aren't I?

Nintendo is going to bank some crazy RoI on those adapters and controllers this holiday. Its well earned and deserved but its going to be crazy.

Interested in the game - quick question:
Can two people on the same Wii U play online together? Similar to Mario Kart.

Apologies if this is an ignorant or outdated question.

No worries! I can wait another week to find out, especially seeing as I won't get my hands on the game for another 2-3 weeks anyway.
;__;

And thanks! That's kind of what I'm suspecting as well, but I'd like to at least see Fourside make a comeback. Also, if you find Lightning Battle, please let me know!

Come on Fourside

It was a weird omission from Brawl...

There's like 9 stage songs that got cut from Melee. 7 of them were rips (64 levels (3), Super Mario Bros, Subcon, Balloon Fight and Saria's Song), one was the Legend of Zelda main theme and the other was... Fourside for some reason.

Any big surprises you've run into so far with anything you've unlocked or hasn't been shown in previews yet? (no need for details, just a yes or no really). I'm just wondering whether or not there's still some unexpected stuff to look forward to.

I'm trying to phrase it in a way you can answer without breaking embargo. :)

Well, I already mentioned blast zones feeling like they're smaller, but what else do you want to know? Probably depends on what your question is exactly.

Sorry, even answering that would be saying more than I'm comfortable with. I basically can't talk about any unlockable content besides characters (which we all know), and it seems music is fair game as well as long as it's not on any embargoed stages.

How are the stage hazards? Do you feel like they pop up too often or are too over powered? I assume this will vary with stage but just kind of curious for your thoughts.

Depends on the stage, but generally they feel fine to me. I like stage hazards (to a point), though, so consider that as the angle I'm coming from.

Obviously the Yellow Devil still kind of sucks, though. Kalos Pokémon League can also sometimes feel a bit cramped to fight in when the giant swords and lava pillars are there, but it's not a big deal overall. Gamer is an example of how to do stage hazards perfectly in my opinion. Such a fun stage!

Oh good. I'm really excited to try out Gamer since it seemed like such a cool gimmick but was afraid that it might happen too often or be too powerful or something. I assume Ridley and everything going on in Pyrosphere is as intrusive as the Yellow Devil?

Nah, even when the mom catches you in Gamer, it's not too powerful, and it doesn't feel like it happens too often. Even so, where she's scanning is very telegraphed so it's very easy to avoid (and to know where to try and throw your opponents).

As for Pyrosphere/Ridley, yeah, I'm not the biggest fan. Feels kind of like the Yellow Devil, as you said. It's fun for something different sometimes, but it's not a stage I see myself playing on very often (or when I do, I'd probably just opt for the Omega version like I do with Wily Castle... pretty much the only two stages I've done that with so far).

Having Olimar, with the Pikmin being the ones driving the kart and tossing items, would be amazing.

Plus he'd fit pretty well in the Mario-verse. We already have the Pikmin in Toadstool Tour.
He was almost in the Mario universe in Superstar Saga. Not to mention that his name is an intentional reference to Marlio - I mean, Mario.

Olimar can be the kart and the Pikmin can drive him.

And now I'm imagining them dragging the kart like raindeer.

My dream "Smash Kart" DLC lineup would be Toon Link, Olimar, and Kirby. Throw Bowser Jr. and Diddy Kong in too - there's no reason for them to be gone in the first place. R.O.B. would also be a welcome return.

Mario Kart 8 has got me thinking about Smash Bros. DLC again. What does everyone’s updated wish list look like? Here’s my top five after Mewtwo (no Assist Trophies, Poké Balls, or stage hazards):

Oh... in that case I'm not entirely sure if you can answer this or not, but it might come in handy for you anyhoo: Does the 'custom' exploit still work for vs match count unlocking?

a.k.a. on the 3DS if you go into the custom menu and select a mii and back out again that actually (for heck knows what reason) counts as a vs match for the unlock conditions. I was unable to unlock all characters incredibly quick by just a,b,a,b,a,b-ing on a mii in the custom menu and then once I'd done it enough to unlock stuff just going to smash and doing vs against the computer to trigger the challenger approaching stuff :3

Playable Nabbit.

I hope his appearances in Mario increases where he's a serious contender next time around. A thief-type character would be neat, sort of an expansion on Villager's Pocket I guess.

Honestly, Lucas and Chorus Kids alone would be more than enough. Of course, I'm totally satisfied with the roster as-is, but these are really the only two realistic character choices that I would absolutely love to see in the game as DLC, and I think the Inkling would be another excellent addition. :D

Super down for these guys + snake

For characters as DLC any of the following would make my day:

* Dixie Kong (DKC)
* Lip (Panel de Pon)
* Viridi (Kid Icarus Uprising)
* Ashley (Warioware)
* Marina Lightyears (Mischief Makers)
* Roll (megaman series)
* Midna (Zelda: twilight princess)
* Isabelle (animal crossing)
* Inkling (splatoon)
* Mawile (pokemon)
* Diancie (pokemon)
* Lilligant (pokemon)
* sylveon (pokemon)
* Goombella (paper mario)

Skins/Alts I'd love to see:
* Zelda - skyward sword
* Sheik - hyrule warriors

I appreciate a good number of those stand no chance whatsoever :p

Wow, these images are fantastic. They really do seem like official DLC characters. :(

As for my top five most-wanted DLC characters, realistic or not, they are:

1. Chorus Kids
2. Dixie Kong
3. Impa (Hyrule Warriors style)
4. Wolf
5. Ganon (A Link to the Past style)

I would have listed Lucas there, but I kind of feel like there's no point as Ness's PK Freeze custom special makes it very clear they have no plans at all to bring him back.

Wily Castle has one of the most interesting platform layouts in the game. I hate how bad it is because of that one hazard.

Agreed. :/

Thanks a lot for this. Nice to see the silence broken a bit.

I've highlighted the portions that are of extreme interest to me, so thank you for your input. Any online discussion?

Mario Kart 8 has got me thinking about Smash Bros. DLC again. What does everyone’s updated wish list look like? Here’s my top five after Mewtwo (no Assist Trophies, Poké Balls, or stage hazards):

Any single one of those would make me happy.
I honestly don't think Inkling has much of a chance, though I'd love to be wrong on that. At least with the others, Dixie & the Chorus Kids have the Spainkiller rumor, & Lucas & Wolf are veterans.

Just over a week now... Good thing I have Bayonetta and Mario Kart to tide me over.
Edit: Since Ridley's been deconfirmed, my only DLC requests are any and all veterans from Brawl. Maybe we could get some other form of Ridley... but probably not.

Nope. There is no online play until a patch that comes out right before the game does but after the review embargo lifts. Take that how you will, I suppose.

I have no idea if that works, and even if it did, I wouldn't be able to say so. I didn't even know that was a thing, honestly!

No worries, NDAs can be a pain sometimes :3
I'm surprised but it seems a lot of people don't know about the custom unlock thing... I assume that most people hear it and assume that there's no way it can work, but I've tested it and used it to unlock peeps on the 3DS so I can confirm it's the real deal. It's possible they fixed it in the Wii-U version though, but I'll have to wait until the 19th to find out I guess XD If they haven't then I'm going to have the full roster within minutes of getting the game :3

Thanks for the info you have been able to give so far though, it's all appreciated! :D
