EA CFO: XBO Pricing Strategy Catching up to PS4, expects 25M PS4+XB1 after holidays

So the quote in the Gamespot article comes in about 2 and a half minutes into the conference. Registration may be required to listen. Gamestop took the quote more or less verbatim from him so there's not a lot to add. I came away from both the text and audio as the CFO talking about pricing strategy catch up, not raw sales catch up.

That makes no sense though.

"Microsoft IS catching up"

They are getting there, but not yet. Thats how I take that quote. Now, lets apply that to pricing strategy.

MS has a $349 bundle going on right now that includes the holidays biggest games for essentially free. Apparently MS pricing strategy has still not caught up to Sony's pricing strategy?

Well they couldn't sell any more 360s than all of them, could they? They had severe shortages during the launch period

It's speculation on which console was more desirable, because there wasn't enough consoles to meet the 360s demand during the launch period, while the Xbox One didn't have this issue.

You can't really compare the launches like that though, because due to a bigger focus on preordering, the industry has much more front loaded sales nowadays and companies are able to supply a lot more consoles due to improved production facilities.

So the X1 had a disappointing launch compared to the 360?

You're expecting the XB1 to sell 3+ million over the next two months?

For reference, those are historic Wii levels.

Not happening, whatsoever.

That sort of implies we know where the Xbox One stands in number of units sold-through. Last I checked, no one knew, and implying that speculation == fact is disingenuous.

Following NPD threads and Quarterly shipment reports, XB1 units sold between 6-7 million sales is a rather good estimate.

XB1 will not be hitting 10 million sold through in 2014.

But, it will outsell PS4 in November.

Totally off-topic: Jesu, have you changed your username recently? I could swear your username was heavy or something like that. And if the answer is yes, how the hell did you do it?

Nah, him and Heavy have the EXACT same avatar.

Confused the hell out of me too lol

I would be surprised if thats true.
I really don't see the XB1 outselling the Ps4 in worldwide numbers, so in fact the gap is not closing but getting wider.

3+ million in 2 months? Maybe in just the US, but worldwide Wii did better.

Xbox One can hit near 2 million alone in the US this holiday.

Fair enough, but we still have a month and a half to go before we can start to say "will" and "will not".

Well, at that point, it'll be "had" and "had not". BUT THE POINT STANDS.

I wonder if Microsoft "channel stuffing" and they will sell that 10 million by March next year.

They seem to flood the market with consoles and for the first few months sales of the following year don't seem to move as the stock clears.

The more telling number will definitely be Microsoft's shipment numbers in Q1 2015 compared to Sony's.

I'm fairly skeptical of XB1 prospects outside the US, especially in light of the sales ratios in EU and extremely competitive PS4 bundles/pricing in the UK.

I have XB1 pegged at 1.1 - 1.2 million tops in the US for Nov./Dec.

Lol, that's fair.

Black Friday weekend should be a great indicator of how their holiday trajectory plays out.

I'm thinking XB1 at 450k-550k for November.

Yeah. The PS3 was really expensive at the time but I don't think anyone can really deny that it wasn't basically bleeding edge technology for what it offered.

It had a bleeding edge CPU and blu-ray playback... and that's about it. Design wise the PS3 was a mess, hence the poor multiplatform versions for pretty much the life of the system. "Bleeding edge" indeed!

Thanks for clearing the confusion, but why the hell is he using the same avatar as you? Your avatar is so unique, I was convinced you changed your username somehow, lol.

Thread on OT had that naked wombat(and other weird/cute animals)
I downloaded it, uploaded it to a cropping website, cropped it and used it as my avvy.
Next day he had it too.Looks identically cropped just like mine!
Then I see him all the time posting.
I don't know what to do so I just leave it...

I'm just hoping the 'bone pulls through at least another million/million-and-a-half by Christmas. It's my platform of choice, you see.

The reaction on this forum to anything remotely positive for the xbox one is amazing lol. It's like the console ran over your dog or something.

The reaction to any news is the same.

What do you want? Everyone to believe wholeheartedly what they read and not question it?

Not surprising.

Xbox One has the games right now and competitive on the pricing front, I can see it being a very hot item this holiday season.

Yes, is ridiculous, neogaf has become just a Sony fan boy forum, Xbox gets only hate here...Anyway I'm happy both console are doing great, I hope they'll sell a lot and almost the same number, that will help competition and will bring good stuff to us consumers

Sony is likely going to be well over 15 million after the holidays. 10 mil for xbox one sounds about right though.
You honestly expect them to do 3 million WW btwn November and December (that's about what they'd have to pull to reach that figure, sold-through)? And somehow for Sony to only do 2 million WW in the same time frame?

In other words, you're expecting America to be such a big factor that it blows away the combined presence of the rest of the markets in the world? Is America truly bigger than the world?

And, yes, I know XBO had a decent launch in China, but the point still stands.

It will, especially since the PS4 isn't remotely competitive in pricing here in NA.

Lol :D

A $50 price deferential in favor of the weaker product is not unexpected. It also mean the competitor is well in range of being price-competitive. You're acting like $50 is suddenly $200 or something.

I also doubt this. Sales for the last week of October, which MS used as reference for the "triple" figure, were suppressed b/c the price count was announced then and I'm certain many buyers held off until the price drop. If October kept up w/ September (it didn't) and they did 280k in September, that'd translate to a weekly average of 70k, for the "triple" figure to be 210k over two weeks. Saying it keeps that pace to BF and that's now 280k, and 90% of Nov. sales happen on BF weekend, and that's about 252k on BF, or 532k for the month.

In November.

That's Saturn-tier. Which isn't too bad, but PS1 was doubling/tripling that as market leader. Even N64 was doubling that at least. PS4 probably sits btwn those two in relative strength in the market right now, closer to PS1. XBO sits btwn Saturn and N64, just slightly more towards Saturn. If it does well these holidays (it'll need to do a good bit more than 532k in November) and can carry that into next year, it'll probably swing closer to the N64. That's the best MS can wish for at this point, then maybe if things keep going well, they can truly aim for the top spot. Right now they're just trying to secure 2nd at a comfortable lead away from the Wii U.

Apologies if me replying to you is out of place, but regardless the difference between $50 and $200, there's still a difference. And that's what I believe matters to consumers more: less money being drained out of their wallets.

Dude, obviously your new 'round here, you missed all the love Sony got here from about 2006 through the reveal in 2013...

Was tough times to appreciate Sony..

Sony arrogance, look it up, lol.

I think it has a lot more to do with MS crappy practices, like BS/deceiving/vague PR statements. personally, the more I learn, the more turned-off I am. If I was a share/stock holder and/or employee of MS, I'd probably look the other way (as some may already do), but I'm not.

I don't see the same dislike towards the Wii U, do you?

Isn't that what happened after the SNES between the PS1 and N64?

The PS2 dominated as well and to this day has the best and most varied library of games ever with a huge install base and a shit ton of software sold.

This argument sucks. Look at how Sony dragged its feet on online play. Look at PSN even now. You need competition or people get lazy. Look at the release of the PS3!

What the hell? That would be catastrophic for the One. You do realize the PS3 did over 1.2 million in its first holiday, with over 460k in just November?

I don't know why you think the number would be that low, but it's not going to do that poorly.
