iOS Gaming November 2014: GLORIOUS!™

Alright quick important question before I pull the trigger..

How does FFVI run on iOS8 and on the 6/6+?

Is Squeenix pretty good about supporting with updates?

As an old school Frogger fan, really digging Crossy Road. Just one of those "gotta try one more time" games.

Hey guys, going to do my part and tell you to check out Checkpoint Champion!

The two guys behind this are some awesome guys who used to work at Halfbrick and decided to go out on their own. The game also has only one IAP - to support the developers!

Download it for free from here! It's a great little game and I hope it does well for them.

I love top down driving games like this, but the car feels a little off to me - too twitchy. Recently, I think Pako - Car Chase Simulator does it right.

Holy shit a new KR, never even knew it was coming.

Bought it and now can't wait for the commute home after work today.

I know this may be blasphemy for some but kind of torn on KR: Orgins. It sounds like more of the same, which is good. But been looking for something a little different in the TD department. Been looking at Crystal Seige or Sleep Attack TD. Thoughts between those?

Also are there any other iPad only TDs worth considering?

I wanted also some variation but I am fine with the many tweaks to the gameplay Iron Hide added. And if I want to play something that feels fresh I switch to Sleep Attack. I like them both. Crystal Siege is iPad only so I cant play it (for now, buying an iPad Air 2 this Christmas)

I have it on my 6 and it runs perfect. Have not had any issues. Granted it is not optimized for 6/6+, but still looks good.

Sunburn is out. Posted some impressions of it last week
Playing it now and it's really good. It's kind of like "Gravity" meets Lemmings meets precision platformer. You jet-boost through zero g, hooking onto stranded astronauts so you can fly into the sun and die together. You have limited oxygen and each boost jump uses oxygen so you need to consider your path through the gauntlet of black holes, meteors, glass planets, and other obstacles. Cute pixel art and a witty sense of humor
$2.99, no IAP. I'd recommend it

I don't find Vainglory all that impressive. It's certainly a pretty game, but not enough to be a Metal showcase, imo. I refuse to call any game where characters don't cast shadow "impressive".

Characters are pretty slow too, so it looks weird because the speed doesn't match the animation. You can increase the speed through the game but still.

I was more impressed with Fates of Forever, but I don't know jack about MOBAs so...

What changes have they made since the original and frontiers? I know the towers are all-new, although they still fit into the same four archetypes, but I'm curious as to what else they tweaked.

Played about 5 or 6 missions this morning. The biggest tweak is that the heros have special powers that run on a timer as well. So for example the first hero has basically an air strike with a bunch of arrows.

There also seems to be a bunch of road side weapons that are on each map that you can touch to fire.

All the enemies are different as well. Similar to the weapons the enemies are similar but different from the previous two games.

Another weird thing about Vainglory is that there's very little audio. Actually, the only thing that makes any sound is your character. Hell is breaking lose around you and yet you can't hear most of ot. Very very irksome.

Aside from what pdk27 said... It seems like the heroes now have another slot on the upgrade system and gain a new ability. Also, enemies take even more routes to your base (like in river or waterfalls). They added a lot of little improvements and tweaks to the game here and there making it even better. Everything feels... tighter. If you enjoyed the first two there is a lot of changes that you will love this one too...

And add me to the list of not being impressed with Vainglory. Didn't like it. The graphics weren't that impressive. Infinity Blade 1 impressed me more.

Thinking of getting Might & Magic, but had a question. What is the "Full Battle Modes Upgrade" IAP?

From the description (I already completed the game) I think you unlock out of the bat all the characters of every faction immediately.
You unlock those just by playing anyway and completing the various quests/regions, there aren't iap needed in the game.

I need to get back to playing Might & Magic now that I have a decent iPad to run it.

As I thought, Dragon Age: Inquisition is sucking all of my game playing time up. Feel good playing real games again. :p

(AKA NOT F2P CRAP. LOOKING AT YOU DASH)

Guess I'm in the minority here, but I'm digging Vainglory. I do agree that it isn't mind blowing graphics wise. There are definitely more showpiece games on the App Store.

That said, the gameplay is pretty fun. Biggest issue for me is that I don't always have a solid block of 20-30 min to get in a match.

Woah! That looks awesome. There needs to be more console quality sci-fi shooters on iOS. With the Ravensword background, wonder if it'll be more on the RPG side of shooters like the console versions of Mass Effect?

Yeah, there's supposed to be skill trees and such. Not sure how the weapon/loot system is going to work, but I assume traditional RPG fare. More ME1/Borderlands than ME2

It's great. I kind of regret my previous comments. The game is really fun.

And I just discovered the community site with tons of info, builds, strategy and tips to help noobs like me. Not to mention the helpful in game videos.

Judging from the information I'm gathering, the depth is huge, but the game is pretty easy to get into. Easy to find a match, lag free.

There are worse ways to spend 20 minutes.

Yeah, I'm noob to MOBAs too. I'm sure I could use some of that info.

My wife is out of town for a few days so hoping to dive into it more while she's gone when I'm not playing my Xbox One. Video games is not one of her favorite qualities of mine, which is one reason why mobile gaming has taken me away from consoles ;)

Mine was practically filled in hours just with games I wanted to replay on it!

From what I've used of a mini retina, the framerates seem a little inferior compared to my 5S. Particularly on the new Contract Killer Sniper. Maybe it's just the big screen that makes it more noticable?

Thoughts, since you're an owner?

Really? I haven't noticed any framerate differences. Of course, I no longer have my 5S to compare it to. But everything seems to run smooth as butter. Even a graphically intensive game that depends on quick framerate like Asphalt 8 runs like a champ.

Could be I have blinders on because I just love the thing.

Perhaps it's just because they were triple A F2P games that are poorly optimized.

I'm gonna bet on that for now, but we'll know when I buy it :D

especially the mini retina 3

I'm getting the 2. I know the mini 3 is last years tech in a new box (same innards as the mini 2), but the mini 2 still has pretty powerful innards. It's nearly identical to the Air, which is a very powerful 64 bit device.

Yeah. it is the same as the original Air. The first Mini wasn't so hot and the third was criticized for not being an improvement. But the Mini 2 is a great device IMO. Nothing subpar about it. As far as iPads go, only the Air 2 is more powerful.

Ok, cool. I haven't experience with the original Air, as I went with an iPad 3 for a long time. Mini 2 is beast, but not when compared to Air 2. I was hoping the Mini 3 would have same innards as Air 2, a la Mini 2/Air.

So lame.

In other news... I don't get the infatuation with Five Nights at Freddy's? I watched a video of it and... wtf is this shit? I literally don't get why this is appealing.

Looks like Apple may be having some kind of $.99 sale based on the wide variety of titles that should be $.99 at 11 EST:

Real Racing 2 HD
Pako
Osmos HD
Shadow Blade
Battle Supremacy
Rayman Jungle Run
Sprinkle Islands
Godfire
Might & Magic Clash of Heroes
Cover Orange HD
Prince of Persia: Shadow and Flame
Blueprint 3D HD
Sky Raiders: Cold War
Sky Gamblers: Storm Raiders
Gangstar Vegas
Blek
Wild Blood
9mm
Deemo
Badland
Bio, Inc.
Duet Game
Dokuro
Doodle God

Seems too coincidental that all are going to $.99. A few of those are the iPad versions too. Maybe more will hit prior to 11. A pre-Black Friday sale perhaps? Of course, some of those are older, but more rare to see the iPad versions on sale.

Got a couple of these. Thanks for the heads up!

One of them was Deemo, a lovely little rhythm game. The only thing I'm sad about is that most of the tracks are DLC, but at least it's not F2P bullshit. And the music that you get with the initial purchase is amazing by itself.

Cursed Treasure 2 is excellent

Looks like Heavy Metal Thunder (sci-fi gamebook) will be free in about 30 min. And the first episode of Valiant Hearts will be $1.99.

Think I'll be grabbing both.

EDIT: Dracula Twins also going free. Underrated, great retro platformer.

Anyone know the installed size of Valiant Hearts (at least the first chapter)?

Edit: Nm, it's 545 MB if anyone else wants to know.
