So what companion is going to be my dagger rogue? I've just recently gotten Sera and Vivienne. I speced Sera fully into Archery and some subterfuge (though I think if I respec her I will just transfer that to the poison tree, same as I did with Varric). Still waiting to get a true dagger rogue in my party, because I want to play with them!

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
I can't really bring myself to hate her ladyship, (mild wicked eyes/hearts spoiler)
Mai Bhalsych of Korse
! Makes me somewhat regret bringing Viviene along for that quest. Her introduction was so ordinary. So uninteresting.

Cole and Blackwall though. I'd talk to everyone and always forget to talk to those two.

Put Viviene with anyone in the active party and the banter in awesome.

She practically verbally bitch slaps Iron Bull in every conversation, her and Dorian have some really good back and forth on Tavinter and Solas and her have bitchy back and forths about chantry and its moral stances.

She's just an overall well written character and the way she calls everyone "Dear" is so cold and awesome, she practically knows she's better than everyone else during a conversation.

Also she's a pretty good battlemage on top of all that.

So if anything has experienced a bug where you enter a cutscene, but the battle overlay is still on....Looks like it's tied to inventory. Specifically, in the Hushed Whisper
Mage
quest. You get two items at the end of the fight and if your inventory is full, you get locked out of progressing basically.

Only option is to reload a pre-fight save and clear a couple spaces.

edit : guess I was wrong.

That's my current spec...and I'm going with Cass, Viv, Sera. I tried using Iron Bull instead of Cass, but he dies too damn easily.

Cole is a Rogue and initially starts as a DW Rogue.

Vivienne is fun, yeah. For a while I had both her and Sera in the party and Vivienne's sneering, domineering attitude was quite prevalent in those verbal exchanges.

Great visual design on the character as well, and her voice actress is also exceptional.

Iron Bull is very easily the best character of your companions.
he has the looks and skills of the typical brute, like an orc or a klingon, but is smart and progressive at the same time. but the best thing about it is that he does not neglect the brutish and traditional culture of his people, but learns to accept it on his own, progressive terms. that's what really makes him great.

cassandra is pretty good, too. a close second.
all the others are forgettable, although I admit that somewhere between cringe and annoyance I kinda like sera.

I have to admit that I miss a total crazy fun character like shale or HK-88.

If I chose my party members by personality/dialogue over class I'd go with Dorian, Iron Bull, and Vivienne.

That's what I generally prioritize and I'm running with that exact party except Sera substituted for Vivienne only because I can't stand locked doors and as such need a rogue in my party. Might replace her with Cole soon.

Iron Bull has been the one mainstay in my party for basically the entire game. He's both a beast in battle and fun to be around.

So is Blackwall
an imposter? So many hints that he's not a grey warden.

His personal quest will directly address this question, i'm guessing you haven't done it yet since you're asking this question.

For some reason his personal quest was the last one triggered for me, so I did it VERY late in the game.

Haha i romanced him with my female qunari.. Lol! He went like
Im not good for you, you don't know me bla bla bla so he has to be fake

Same here. That doesn't mean i'm unhappy with my active party on how they perform though.

My most-used party through the game was 2 mages and 2 warriors.

I-e Evelyn (inquisitor), Iron Bull, Solas and Vivienne (i would revisit a zone after doing the majority of its quests with a rogue to open all the masterwork or otherwise locked doors).

How many here are playing as archer rogue? How viable is it in this game? I'd like to play as one on hard difficulty, but have heard not so favorable things about the class.

they do great single target damage, more than mage at least. they also have very nice cc capabilities. the archers stronges shot also puts the enemy to sleep, and far longs than the mages cc abilities.

have we any indication how large this game is as i don't want it to end.

chose my side in the first faction conflict and have been to hinterlands , marsh and redoubt.

after waiting so long i just don't want to get through it too quickly so am mixing up exploration and main quest without grinding every side quest and getting out leveled.

Their damage is quite low early game compared to the other ranged class, the Mage. However, as you unlock better weapons, you start to catch up to Mages. You're never going to have the utility of a Mage (Barrier 2 gewd), but they aren't completely worthless like they are early game.

If you like seeing big numbers, they're good at that, just don't expect too much more.

No love for Varric? The ongoing feud between him and Cassandra is fantastic in my opinion :p

Varric, Solas, and Blackwall are the three companions I have barely used in this playthrough.

Varric and Solas I envision using in another playthrough. Blackwall doesn't really do it for me.

Blackwall is great if your MC isn't the tank for the group. He's pretty much the best tank in the game between him and Cassandra.

Yea, archer takes much longer than mages to start pumping out the big numbers. But once they do they're not bad at all.

Archer + Tempest = fun times. Artificer is pretty nice too, too bad the best skill is tied to that focus nonsense.

I wouldn't disagree with you regarding her banter. I love how she can usually out do Sera at her game. It's just the introduction for that particular quest. Cassandra's was kinda funny. Sera's one just killed it for me. Viviene's was just... an ordinary introduction. First enchanter, etc etc.

This is my party too. Herald is a CC / support rift mage, Cass tanks and Iron Bull and Sera just dish out DPS. Works out great on hard and the banter is great.

My favorite banter bit is when Sera asks Iron Bull if he is planning on trying to convert her to the Qun and he just cracks up for like 10 seconds strait lol.

Haha, this is my default party too, except I'm an KE instead of rift mage. My favorite banter was when Bull got miffed at Sera for stealing his kills and Sera claims she was just helping him, and Bull dubbed it "Kill Helping" :D

Iron Bull is the most regular source of comic relief. He is this giant monster that drops puns cracks dick jokes during missions. The poster above is right about how his appearance belies his personality. Vivienne is arguably the strongest most consistent personality. Her voice actor/model/fashion make perfect sense in the universe and her constant belittling and condemnation make for hilarious exchanges with other party members. Her lines are delivered without irony and they work. I first called Dorian the "mustachioed douche" but his background is relevant (as far as I've played) to the main story line. He is conceited, vain, yet extremely principled. His political commentary maybe a bit heavy-handed but his attempt to defend his people while acknowledging the suffering they have caused fills a nice gap in the story.

I'm one of the few people who liked playing DA2, and even then I disliked varric ;>
but his cassandra interactions are very good, but mostly because of her. he is a very cliché character.

Id say Cassandra is the cliché one. Talk about generic.

Cole is lame.

I hate sera. She has an annoying personality, and there is hardly any banter when she is on my team.

I like varric, but he can only use bianca. I hate that. I want to be able to use bows.

Coles personality isn't that great, but it is way better than seras. And he can use bows, so he's on my team.

Then it's casandra and Dorian. I really hate vivienne. Really stuck up.

I'm delaying my playtime with the game, but this is the kind of stuff i like to hear... so excited to get deeper into the game.

Blackwall and Solas have a surprising amount of banter. A lot of war-buddy-buddy talk.
Two anecdotes about Blackwall:

I was solving a set of puzzles in the Hissing Wastes, where Blackwall would tell me a story about how he survived out in the desert as I finished each set. I'm really getting into the story thinking it's going to be some brutal shit about eating other Grey Wardens. Nope
. He talks about they accidentally ate hallucinogenic berries (no it wasn't a funny story) and they woke up to animals trying to drag them into pits to eat them.
That's it.

Before that, Cass asked him his story about joining the Grey Wardens. His response was literally about how unremarkable it was. He tells the story anyway. Guess what? It's unremarkable.

Yuck. His spec tree makes him a fucking monster tank, though. So there's that.

That must have taken hours and hours..
I had a problem creating a char that didn't look like a monkey freak..and a few more female hairdos would really be nice..
If there had been a long hair option for that char she would look spot on.

Any class is viable because the only thing you must have is a tank and you've got 3 different NPCs---one of which you start with---who can fill that role.

Play whatever you want, it doesn't matter.

I am playing archer rogue, btw. Can crit for over 7k around level 23 with one of my skills.

What's cliche about him? I feel like he's very unique, especially given his Dwarven background.

He can use daggers too surprisingly, but I could never separate him from bianca :p

Talking purely about range. My current setup is

-tank
-2 hand
-archer
-mage

I would have a rogue, but I would have to be the rogue all the time. Don't trust the Ai to be able to handle that.

Maybe in another playthrough.

Speaking of Iron Bull, any recommendations as to how to spec him out? Currently lvl 12 and I don't know if the AI will be able to use his Reaver skills effectively.

Hard hasn't seemed hard at all tbh. My party makeup is pretty decent though. I use Solas as a support style mage with freezing and barriers and the like. I made Cassandra the ultimate taunting damage sponge and then I rely on myself (dual dagger rogue) and Sera (bow rogue) to dish out the DPS. The only time I suffered a party wipe was going against a group of level 12s as a level 4 party lol.

This game is crazy fun though. Having a blast. I wish wish wish they would have more AI options than when to use a potion and who's target to attack. It's kind of silly. The original Origins had so many awesome AI options for party members. Or they could have worked something like the FFXII gambit system in there. ANYTHING would be better than what the party is doing now.

I wish I had changed up my party more often, but it's such a pain to swap equipment that I mostly just stuck to my main team and occasionally subbed in one other person. Being a mage makes it tough to put two of the NPC mages together in the party.

Where's the best place to get StormHeart?

There is some in the dungeon in Crestwood.

The loot is garbage your best bet is crafting. Though, I did get lucky and got a decent dagger from an early boss fight, and I'm still using it but in general, yeah garbage. I stopped picking everything, and only keep from loots unique or rare equipment. the grey ones I always ignore.

See, I really like how loot is handled in DA:I. I much prefer loot systems where really good gear is rare and you keep using the same piece of gear for a long time. It makes it more meaningful when you do find good stuff.

They should have severly reduced the EXP you get from weaker enemies to help mitigate this some.

They do. If the enemy is more than 3 levels below you then you get no XP.

Maybe others will disagree, but I've used Iron Bull as an AI extensively, and I would say no. The Reaver skill tree is capable of some insane DPS when used correctly by itself and even more so with the right party set up, but it requires finesse the AI does not posses. He just ends up dying unless you baby him with barriers and switching characters.

I'm 40hs in playing as an archer on Nightmare. There has been some hard parts, but not because of the class. My most used abilities are the "backflip while shooting 100 arrows" and the "explosive arrow". The backflip one specially does a great deal of damage when in close range.

Started a new Rouge character recently and am so glad I did. One question though...please tell me I will find some armor that actually looks awesome.

Right now I basically refuse to wear anything but my cloak because I end up looking like this whenever I put any form of helmet on:

images

Later I purchased a chest plate and was all excited about it....I looked like a kid wearing his dads armor. I had this biddy little head sticking out of the top with this trash can around my torso. Pleeeease tell me armor looks better than what I've seen so far.
