Xbox One beats PS4 on Black Friday, according to market-research firm

This is black friday shoppers we are talking about here, they always go for whatever has been marked down and on sale.

That's not necessarily true. Shoppers will more often opt for that $800 Samsung TV before buying that $700 Westinghouse of equal size and features. If a shopper knows that Timmy wants a PS4, that's what they're buying. People are not blindly buying gaming consoles with zero research without a care in the world about which brand console they're buying solely based on price.

Maybe if a kid has literally written "either an XBO or PS4" on their Christmas list, then price will factor into the decision.

If MS "won" then good one them. I would be interested to see how they can keep the kind of deals they're offering going into 2015.

If they can't - then all if this is rather moot isnt it?

They basicly need to keep the 329/349 price regardless unless they want a sales collapse in january.

People will just wait for the next sale cause they know now how low MS is willing to go.

No way MS raises the price again.

Everyone gets a sales collapse in January. As a proportion of a years sales, January doesn't matter very much. November and December matter a great deal.

Winning November is huge for Microsoft. It doesn't win them this console war. That's probably already lost. Well done, Sony! But it keeps them relevant and in the game. It increases their install base at an absolutely critical time. Consider this: last month I read several articles implying that MS might start losing out on 3rd party games if the ONE kept selling so anemically. A strong showing this holiday season makes those articles redundant.

How does outselling Sony in one territory for one month help the fact that there's an estimated sales gap of about 6 million units? Unless they outsell the ps4 by millions it won't make any difference.

MS might well have outsold PS4. However the title should reflect this is a poll really as its not claiming MS did outsell it merely the trend in the poll indicates it might have.
"Might"....
No reason to make this unnecessary thrilling.
The Xbone "won" the Nov. NPD.
Which isn't really shocking, if you slash the price and bundle it with 1 million games to make this console sell already.

As in Xbone not getting some multiplats? Yeah you need to stop reading the sites with those articles.

Anecdotal, but at my work both Xbone and Wii U best PS4.

Anecdotal, but I know only four people who own XB1 and/or Wii U, and two of them also have PS4. 12 in total have PS4. The userbase among my friends and acquaintances has almost doubled after Destiny was released. A couple more have said they'll also buy one, when Bloodborne comes.

Raise your hand if you didn't seen this coming...

Massive price cuts on the Xbone and the PS4 has been dominant so most interested were already owners. I'm glad to own both now though.

Let's wait untill the real numbers are in worldwide after christmas, shall we?
But good to read that MS is coming back from what seemed certain doom in the console market.

This is what's dangerous about their price drop. They pretty much ingrained in the people's mind that they can go as low as $329 for their system. Common sense will dictate that if they return back to their regular pricing, people would just wait for he price to drop that low again to buy.

Tell me more about this loss...

Wait... You think that each console sold at $349 (let alone $329) with two free third party games still makes them a profit?
With what little data we have, it appears that the XB1 actually costs more to produce than the PS4 (ESRAM / size of chipset). They may make a few $ when selling @ $399, but $349 is pretty much a net loss. Add in the free games for which they have to pay the publisher... And you can see that MS is using its deep pockets to finance a win for November.

I can't imagine how much annoying shit will coming from Major Nelson & company if xbone 'win'. They dropped the balls with every single prediction in favour of xbone, this year. The only reason why I hope it not happen it's for people like them.

And I'll be just as amusing for people on the otherside, either way lots of fun to be had.

Nelson will send out a few burns though.

Tell me more about this loss...

MS's latest investor call had the following quote:

Satya Nadella said:
In computing and gaming, we expect revenue to be $3.5 billion to $3.8 billion [Oct-Dec 14]. This range reflects growth in Xbox One consoles over the last year, but a mix shift to lower price SKUs announced last June. With the momentum we are seeing with Surface Pro 3, we expect units to grow sequentially.

In the same quarter last year, their revenue was 4.7 billion. Given that they expect Surface revenue/profit to show an uptrend, that means they estimate that the Xbox business is going to contribute a billion dollars in lost revenue this holiday.

And it's not hiding a loss. It's that any negatives are offset by other profit streams, like XBLive revenue, Surface profits, etc. It's no different from other businesses, where the good parts cover up for the weaker ones.

Kind of waiting for the xbox blog entry if they really won Black Friday.

Monday will show.

But maybe they have to wait for the NPD reports in ~2 weeks before they get official data.

I also think they will officially drop to 349 soon. This is the number they need to compete roughly 1:1 with the PS4 for 399.

So be it :)

I don't know what market MS trying to aim, but I think they want to sell more machine.
Those games are quite important to Asia market, which include China.

Are they? Because from what I've read they might as pack up and go home considering the peformance of the xbone in Japan and other asian areas.

The US has always been the market they want because they aim at shooter fans. Hence the countless first on xbox stuff for CoD.

It'd help for MS to actually try and have a presence in developing countries. 360 actually had something going on for MS in Asian regions, due to its ease of piracy. However, the problem was that MS presumably took those high piracy rates as reason to ignore our markets, whereas Sony continues to give pirate markets like us decent focus.

Yeah, it's true that US/UK (and some others) are the priority markets for Xbox, but they're focusing on those on the detriment of other developing markets.

not really. the ps4 is more closely related to last gen's second place console. that system's second and third novembers were around 500k and 750k respectively. it's not a stretch that if the microsoft was outperforming the ps4's perfectly fine sales on a weekly basis of about 2:1 that it would have built up a lead of about 100k or so before black friday even started. the xb1 with a 200k-300k gap over the ps4, where the xb1 is around wii/ps2-levels of second novembers (around 918k), isn't too hard to picture to be honest.

Thanks for helping put that in perspective, but there's still the momentum is image-problem issues that prevent me from seeing that happen w/ XBO this soon. PS2 and Wii never had momentum drop so fast after launch like XBO did; that system was trending w/ OG Xbox and early PS3 aside from an occasional month like February.

I also slipped up and should've clarified I meant comparing PS4's performance more to traditional systems like the 360 and PS2; I don't think any system can perform like the Wii ;). And the XBO has none of the mainstream breakout appeal the Wii had.

If XBO does take November I'm gonna chalk it up to stock allocation; Sony may manufacture more PS4s but they have more markets to send them to.

It's the Sega strategy all over again; when Sega knew they weren't going to be able to beat PS1 they just needed to find a way to stay relevant at the most important times, and maybe take 2nd place. They also had the most aggressive holiday bundles during that gen.

The difference btwn Sega and MS, obviously, is that MS has the money to weather the dry spells of massive momentum drops in-between the holiday seasons. So in a lot of ways a future Xbox being worth it to them depends on how well XBO does during the holidays. But to make up for all the lost sales in the dry months (especially early 2015, that we know of), they need, like 3+ million in November and December.

....Crazier things have happened.

How will they hide a divisions loss?

No way division is losing money this quarter. XBOX 360 sales and Minecraft is still a top seller. Gold subscriptions, accessories a cut of all titles sold, etc.

Wasn't there an Engadget article a while back saying XBO chipset costs were down due to new manufacturing tech? I thought I read something like that.

WiiU - why u no decrease price???

Haha. It's the pricing. Games? That's preference. Controller? Preference. Better bundle? Preference.

It's the price. Overall, the PS4 is a better console, if it wasn't, it wouldn't be selling as well as it is, despite MS giving the house away. Let's not kid ourselves,

Better console how? because it has some cross platform games at higher resolution?

Meh.

This year or this month?
Um.. both?

Black Friday only happens once a year, which happens to be this month...

I think they deserve to win yearly sales aswell at least in the US/UK between the xbox1/PS4, though that wasn't what I was talking about and I don't think they will. They've had the better games. Out of all three current gen consoles I'd say the WiiU deserve it most though, but yeah we all know it has no chance :(

nope cause it will last you longer with better first party support, better specs AND all around better multiplats. Not just higher resolution but with more and better effects and improved framerates.

Minecraft made up that 2.5b investment already?
