Hero Bank 2 3DS is the bomba of the week at 8K. The original Hero Bank sold 15K first week. I wonder who at Sega thought a sequel would be a good idea.

This might sound a bit paradoxical, but by the same note that I feel many Japanese publishers aren't willing enough to take big risks (like investing a bunch of money in their flagships or big bets), I feel they are also not willing enough to cancel things that aren't going to go anywhere.

There's got to be something that the people who worked on Hero Bank 2 for 9 months could have better spent their time on.

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???

Contractual agreement I guess? They had already signed for two games - to nullify the contract or cancel the second game in development, wouldn't you have to pay a certain fee in doing so?

May as well recoup your investment in what is left in the property, then to do a write-down + pay the developers a fee to cancel the development of the game.

IIRC the Hero Bank games are outsourced. The "only" thing it cost Sega is money.

You guys think Toukiden 2 will be a Vita exclusive, or another multiplatform like SAO and GE?

It might be PSV/PS4 at the start or Vita first with 2 Kiwami hitting PS4. Based on what the producer said recently, I can't see them not trying a console version. Of course, if GE2: RB comes out and sells nothing on PS4, that might change things.

I was thinking this one was internal for some reason.

That said, I'm surprised that they would sign studios for two projects at once that aren't compliant on the first game selling X copies.

Perhaps this is more common in the local market.

Not sorry about EOU2 sales.

Grimoires are shit and Atlus, as much as I love them, can stand to lay off the remasters. Especially on games that are backwards compatible with the system they are being remastered for.

I imagine it's so the developer is definitely available for the sequel in the case of a big success.

remaster? EOU2 is a remake, you know, not the usual "remake" that is just a resolution and fps bump, but a real remake.

They also made Grimoires better, and believe me when I say that I hate them.

I also need them to eventually make EOU3, god damn.

3 million is a constraint for a major-major title, but if people considered a performance similar to God Eater 2 on PSV a good target for PSN, it isn't a big constraint. The number of Phantasy Star Online 2 users (not downloads) on Vita only adds to show that Vita userbase is not a constraint for the intended numbers.

If PSV doesn't manage numbers comparable to God Eater 2 or Freedom Wars, which are from the same genre and should appeal to mostly the same audience, userbase constraint cannot be determined as a decisive factor. It may be a factor, but may not be the most important factor when we consider that the reaction to PS Nova has not been good since the first demo.

That is not to say you may not be right that a PS3 version could change things, but I believe it wouldn't add more than 20% or 25% to the total sales considering the biggest complaint that the game it not very compeling to PS fans. That wouldn't be much considering that if it goes as expected, PSN will end near 200K LTD.
I'd argue userbase could be constraining God Eater and Freedom Wars too though on Vita. In the PSP heydays days major non-MH hunting games could sell 600k+, but on Vita they're trending closer to half that. Such a small userbase is always going to be an issue for major titles, Wii U is showing the exact same thing with Nintendo tentpoles.

By the way, can you give me a source on a million "Phantasy Star Online 2 users (not downloads) on Vita"? Because this is the first I'm hearing of that.

Hero Bank also has the anime, dunno for manga or other merchandising products (there are some toys)

so if we consider S-E's Gyrozetter a failure (game and anime, game sold poorly) I don't know why Hero Bank can't be considered a failure too just because it hadn't a huge drop off such as Gaist Crusher
or the anime is just after YW by the TV audience?

i think those 3 titles are some of the most commercial failures of this generation, and I don't have to forget Senran Kagura 2...

Oh hiska-kun!

Are you going to visit the Pokemon Center Mega Tokyo when it opens? :D

Side note, also I just visited Famitsu, what are they saying here?:

They are commenting on Pokemon & Phantasy Star's performance but can't decipher much, google translate is terrible ;.;

How did you know I was planning to go? lol
They'll open the PKM center just the day before Youkai Watch 2: Shin Uchi is released.
Nintendo just wants to spoil the launch :p

Famitsu is just saying that ORAS is first again and soon will reach 2 million.
Nova didn't reach Infinity numbers and it sold like Soul Sacrifice.

Hahahah damn Pokemon Company wants to spoil the launch of Youkai :p
Soon they will be launching another Pikachu invasion to counter-attack!

I remember you speaking vaguely of the Pokemon Center Tokyo closing for a Mega Center so I was positive you would at least visit, maybe not on opening day, but surely by the end of the year lol :p

I won't be able to visit Japan until next year when business permits so please take some pics :D

Plus you get a special Pikachu card! cute

And look at dat plushieeeeee

Curious as to how the new AoT game will do. The first one did surprisingly well.

It's the same game with some extras. All persons who purchased the first game can upgrade, downloading the extras for a special reduced price.

It's like Fantasy Life Link!

Curious as to how the new AoT game will do. The first one did surprisingly well.

It won't sell more than 100k, in my opinion. It's an expansion, and those who bought the original one, can upgrade at a budget price on the eShop.

Whatever happened to Derby Stallion? Franchise used to sell millions in Japan.

Only one entry sold 1m+, Derby Stallion on PSP. It was selling well on PS2, but then it plummeted to 150-200k level. Derby Stallion on DS sold 300k+ though.

Aikatsu, derby and samurai sales will be highly interesting here.^^

Samurai will bomb.

Whatever happened to Derby Stallion? Franchise used to sell millions in Japan.

The same thing that happened to Pachislot games and puzzle games. When you have genres which don't really have a hold on core audiences, but aren't exactly "casual" in the modern sense either, once the audience goes away, it's hard to get them back. Horse racing is popular in Japan, just like Pachislot and Pachinko is. So it is not unusual that when videogames because a huge trendy "in" thing at the height of the PS1 and PS2 eras, we saw a lot of these non-traditional videogames enjoy inflated success in Japan.

Some of these games (pachinko and horse racing) also do quite well on mobile which is a better audience fit nowadays.

This. I see people on the train playing these types of games on their phones all the time. The genres aren't dead, they just went mobile. Same can be said for Mahjong games, shogi games, life simulation games...

...And games in general.

I think that what mobile has done is really to give these games a new leash of life though. There was definitely a period towards the end of the PS2's lifespan and before smartphones really took off, where these titles basically died off because people were no longer interested in paying for them as full retail products. The allure of that died off, and with smartphones and f2p business models now, they're back again.

DS sold plenty of those types of game.

What's the best selling Pachislot game on DS?

I thought pachislot games were considered in a broader category consisting of "genres which don't really have a hold on core audiences, but aren't exactly "casual" in the modern sense either". This definition fits quite well the touch generation.

I really dont like Media Create threads...

Everyone has wildly different arbitrary reason in terms of expectations for games and when they dont meet them its a "bomba this bomba that"

Someone is always having a metal breakdown over something. Its very negative. Games dont sell that much these days. You take what you can get. Berate companies for screwing up their franchises, not for not eeking out the maximum theoretical selling potential. Or when they pull a ubisoft ( who is always on the cusp of "not making a profit" while they churn out the same old junk formula structure to whatever open world game they decide to make next. Doesnt matter what genre it is its gonna have that formula.)

It'd behoove some of these publishers to do a lot of contract work so they can stay lean.
Looking at you Sony.

As for Nintendo... they need to offer one unified environment to make it easy for their partners and 3rd party developers working on their systems ( Japanese and Indies basically)

PSP has a million seller in Japan?

EDIT: I see that it's a typo

... Several....

What about Sony? Besides you also mention Ubisoft and indies. Are you talking about Japan at all here?

Yes Im talking about Japan. Development practices exist all over the world after all so I'll bring them up. The posts here constantly talk shit about these dev teams when some game or another doesnt meet your lofty expectations. It doesnt seem right to me.

Japan Studio's issues( and the incident with Stig over at Sony Santa Monica) could have been avoided if they were more interested in what their developers were actually doing and used hired more contract workers keeping things tighter back at home.

3DS down ~ 2,000 units YoY
Vita up ~ 4,000 units YoY

interesting....the New 3DS hasn't translated to higher sales YoY, but without the New 3DS sales would probably be much much lower
