New Nintendo 3DS & New Nintendo 3DS XL Launch Thread

Sorry if this question has been asked, but I haven't been following much about the new 3DS. As an owner of the 3DS XL, what are the reasons to consider an upgrade? I have a few 3DS rpg's on my backlog, but I mostly plan to spend time playing thru the countless DS RPG's I missed (I never owned a DS). I hear a lot of people raving about the 3D but 3D makes me feel nauseous so I usually leave if off. Any other reasons for somebody like me to consider the upgrade?

are there any xl vs nxl screen quality comparisons? the original 3ds/xl have very low quality screens, narrow viewing angles, terrible grayscale etc. back in the DS days Nintendo improved the screens with each iteration so im curious if they've done the same with the 3ds.

One of the reason to upgrade is the new screens. While still not perfect, they are so much better. I want to replay all my game with the improved IQ of the screens. Another reason is the built quality, It don't feel like the unit will crumble between your hands anymore, it's very sturdy. The sound quality is improved too. It's one of the better nintendo handheld upgrade, and at 200€/$ it'd rather should be.

The cstick doesn't move, you just push it and it detects the pressure. I found that you don't have to fear pushing too hard. It works better that way.

II'll also call out all the people saying the 3d+ is perfect. It's clearly not and when dealing with technical matters, the word perfect is meaningful and mustn't be used lightly. It's brining back memories of the 3ds launch when amirox had to fight horde if people saying the 3d worked fine...

I have the exact same problem. I'm wondering if some of us got defective units.

Ok i have more than 1 3ds and i can confirm that 3d calibration freaks out if you're wearing glasses.

So now I'm just trying to get it to wear I'm not seeing double in monster hunter. Its like i have to have it at the perfect angle or turn the 3d down to the lowest level.

First world problem here. My wife bought the Monster Hunter edition and the Majora's mask edition, she could not reach me at work so she decided to get both, so I can pick the one I like and return the other to the store. Can't decide which to open. Never played Monster Hunter before and it may take too much time to get into the series. On the other hand ...I love how the Monster Hunter edition looks and I have bought a regular copy of Majora's Mask too. Any advice who have seen both in real life or played Monster Hunter for the first time?

Go with Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate if you've played Majora's Mask before. Go with Majora if you haven't played it yet.

Don't even bother with the demo for MH4 man, the full game really teaches you how to play from A-Z. If you like what you have seen on MH4 in gameplay videos, you are gonna like this game, I assure you.

Great thanks.

I just bought a New Nintendo 3DS (the regular sized) in black. A charger. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate. And that's it. None of the stores in the mall had any face plates or craddles.

I also already have Steel Diver and Phoenix Wright Vs. Professor Layton. Too bad I sold all of my best games for very cheap last year.

Yeah, that feeling really sucks.
Last time I sold a system was my launch period Mega Drive when I bought my SNES on launch and didn't think I need my MD anymore.
Big mistake as I ended up buying another MD in 97 along with tons of games that I missed too much.

Decided to never do that again and for some time that worked till the original Xbox which I bought for just the Sega exclusives.
Then those dried up and I sold it and bought more PS2 games with the money.
About a year later OutRun 2 was announced and I ended up getting another one.

Selling systems never seem to work out for me, so at this point I would be able to open a small museum due to all the stuff that has been collected over all those years. ;)

I'll add my thoughts after playing some MH4 last night:

I have glasses and seem to have no issues with the head-tracking (they have anti-glare coating on the lens's so maybe that helps)

Every time I want to use the stylus to navigate the store or something I reach to the right hand side where it was on the old 3DS XL

The power button is hard to hit when I actually want to turn the system off but I had no issues with accidentally hitting it while playing which is good.

Screen quality does seem nicer overall looking at the two side by side

The faster CPU is noticeable and greatly appreciated

The black covers are really nice looking, would prefer slightly less gloss but compared to the Red and Blue launch offers on the first 3DS XL in NA I much prefer the new look/colors.

I played MM but did not finish it back in the days. I own a regular 3DS copy though. If I keep my MM 3DS XL I actually own 2 copies of the same game. Guess I'm answering my own question lol.... but damn...both consoles look so good.

Don't take the MM one back, sell it in the GAF BST thread and make a profit while making a gaffer's day.

Same. Works the same for me whether wearing glasses (also have AR coating) or contacts. Works well in lit room, or in dark in bed for me as well. Very impressed by it. I really have to move fast or a lot to make it spazz out.

I thought the MM XL in the US doesn't come with the game?

Edit: ah Europe

Why not keep the Mh4 XL as you like the look better? Doesn't matter if you don't get on with the game, you'll still have the hardware

Thanks. Gonna go for the MH Edition...looks so good and you're absolutely right.

Hey guys picked up a New 3DS XL yesterday. First time owning an XL. Man it is so much nicer than the standard 3DS. I can never go back to the small screen ever. lol.

Quick question, has there been any mention of Nintendo releasing a charging dock similar to the one the original 3DS came with? I checked my local Best Buy and GameStop and they both told me no. :(

There's an official one in Japan. You can buy one on eBay for $23-25.

Here are my preorder pick-ups from last week:

- 3 new Amiibo figures

- Zelda System, LE and MH4U LE (web in store GameStop)

- Also, for posterity my (now retired), OG FE system -

The improvements to the N3DSXL are stellar. As a fan of 3D, I refused to use a 3DSXL because of the screen shimmer, poor resolution and overall, terrible 3D. I 'downgraded' to the FE OG system, when that launched and never looked back at my old XL.

I hated the 3D, speaker sound, creaky bottom plates and wobbly hinge.

Now, the hinge of my N3DSXL wobbles slighty when open (doesn't shift left or right when closed), but to the new 3D makes the slight wobble mute. The speakers are fantastic, as are the snugness/fit of the volume/3D lever(s). On the older systems, they were almost loose and had no resistance. I appreciate tight buttons and levers.

The 3D is really stellar and works so well!

I've always used the 3D and hated the OGXL's 3D implementation. I think the N3DSXL's 3D finally tops the OG 3DS's stability/sweet spot and I'm happy to move beyond the glossy OG finish.

Sorry my post is skittish - lol - I've got a terrible fever and these are just quick thoughts.

100% worth the upgrade!

Also, I LOVE my Hori crystal case (shipped from JP) and screen protectors which I bought on EBay weeks ahead of launch, in preparation for 2/13.

Great Haul!
That Crystal case looks great! I'm going to look into getting one of those I think.
I decided to import a European White n3DS and a Japanese Black n3DS. It was my birthday, so I splurged a little :) I can't wait for them both to arrive!
I already have the standard release of MM on the way to me and I picked up MH4 from Best Buy on Friday.
It's been a great month!

The MM 3DS XL does not include the game.

Edit - nevermind

Damn now I'm tempted. Always found MH to be difficult to get into - threads are often impenetrable. But if it guides you through, plus comments about similarities to PSO have piqued my interest

Licorice-flavoured booze?
Bit annoying how lose the screen is, mine can even be moved left to right along the hinge, are they all like this?

My only regret is GameStop not yet getting in the Dedede Amiibo that I preordered. I want to train up SpeedDeDe in Smash Bros 3DS at work on lunch breaks.

The speakers really are a big improvement. I used to have to use headphones with the 3DSXL if I actually cared about a game's audio but the new speakers are so loud and clear that may not be necessary anymore. Last night while playing MH4 I could even easily tell where a monster was when I lost visuals on it based on the fakish surround sound that they have going.

I noticed that on mine too and I wonder if that's how they address the hinge cracking issue on the old 3DS. With all that give there's probably a lot less pressure on those hinges.

This is the XL version right?
I would imagine it would be like this for the non-XL version too, but I don't know for sure. It's not something you notice until you try and move the screen from side to side. It's like less than 1mm and not something I've noticed for the past 3 months where I've had mine

Regular screens barely display properly if viewed from the far left or right, not sure why one would expect a 3d screen to work at those angles. As far as I'm concerned, the 3d on the new 3ds is perfectly implemented in that I can view from any reasonable angle without disturbing the 3d effect. In fact viewing the 3d from a different sngle actually has improved my interpretation of the 3d depth by giving me a sense of space and range. I love it.

I have the regular sized version and the screen is not loose at all. I tried moving mine and didn't notice anything. It might be there but I can't see it.

My biggest problem with this so far is the placement of the power button. I had a feeling it would be a problem when I saw that they moved it to the bottom and so far it has become a big problem. I've become used to playing the 3ds with my pinkies resting on the bottom of the console, I've only had it for 24 hours and so far I've accidentally shut it off 3 times already. First time I lost about 20 mins of progress on TotA and most recently it was during an online smash match now I have to wait 10 minutes till I can play again. I play a lot of RPGs so I am dreading all the progress I know I am going to loose in the future because of this :(

You are a clone of me, man. I've turned off MH4 3 times already. Now, I have to make sure I'm saving every free second. I'm trying to adjust my right hand a bit, but it's tough with the muscle memory I've been using for years now. All that really needs to be changed is auto-closing games when you hit that button. There really should be a confirmation window.

Question. Are you guys now actually using 3d as a standard when playing games now? Or at least use it more often? Also I know it is stable now but does it still hurt your eyes?

I liked the 3D on the OG 3DS so I really hope it's amazing on the N3DS! It's a feature I really wanted to succeed, so it's nice to have this little platform embracing 3D.
I haven't tried mine yet. Still charging.

Nope, I don't use it but I never did. It gives me a headache after a couple minutes. I see it as a fancy gimmick, my main interest is in the games and portability of handhelds. The new stable 3D is impressive though.

Another question. I have no downloaded games on my 3ds xl, just some demos and save data. So if I use the wireless transfer it should be relatively fast right? I've heard it's slow with like lots of downloaded Eshop games but I have none

Why are you guys touching the top screen, let alone grabbing it to shift it side to side during use?
I'm wondering this myself. "This is totally broken when you do this thing that no one ever does". This came up before, I think, I remember a discussion about how "loose" the top was when you shake it violently.

With the new layout it's actually very natural to do this. You go to adjust the 3D setting, pushing the screen to the left. Then you go to adjust the volume, pushing it back.

I wanted to tell I didn't know what you're talking about, but after trying to move the screen left to right by putting a strong pressure, yeah... it's moving. The top part is still very sturdy in normal use and if not for your post I would have never noticed that I can move it. Maybe some units are more flimsy than others...

Yeah, it's much better and it's really fine, but it's far from perfect and flawless, even in normal use. If you're relaxing a little bit too much or move your head or the console a little too fast, the effect will be broken.
People have different standards and when some read "perfect" and "flawless", they really expect that. We can all agree the stability is a lot better, but if you still want a perfect and flawless stability, the only option is 2D mode. You still have to sacrifice a little stability with 3D+ mode.

Yeah it shouldn't take foo long. Expect about an hour still though

Pros about the new 3DS:
- L & R buttons are better
- 3D is better
- Faster loading

Cons:
- C-stick is ass
- Glossy on the outside
- No exclusive games as of yet

It's annoying to many people because it happens even when you're NOT touching it. That's why I was complaining it as well earlier in the thread. The screen would shift to the left or right even if I'd just shift my weight or tilt the system slightly. Also when you're adjusting the volume or 3D slider, it will snap to the left or right.

Actually, my hinge does move 1mm from left to right but it doesn't bother me. The 3D seems far better. I also love that there isn't any light indicator on the front screen when you have 3D activated.

Anyway, I need your help. I'm trying to link my Nintendo ID to my New 3DS but it say it have already been used with another 3DS (my OG device which I have sold). What can I do about this?

You will have to call Nintendo and have them move your NNID to your new unit
