The Order: 1886 |OT| Gears of Yore

It's unthinkable that somebody could give this a 4/10.

Especially considering how much of game reviewing these days sit on the 7-10 scale. It seems oddly vindictive to me.

I know this isn't the place for this but I gotta comment on it.

a 4/10 to me screams unpolished, buggy, gamebreaking and just overall not enjoyable.

I agree with you. I just don't see it

There seems to be some sort of disconnect I really cannot figure it out.

It's a great game... I just feel like they ended it halfway through... Not a proper ending at all so many plot points to still tie up. Graphics are the best I've seen. Solid gameplay. Good story. Can't wait for the sequel!!

Agreed.

I can only speak for myself but there was no point during my time playing The Order: 1886 that I had fun. Now, not every game has to be fun, but I just know I regret buying it.

Well then.

Definitely the best looking character models in a game so far.

Is that one of the pre-order costumes?

The hair looks excellent here.

Where they not happy with how the game turned out or how some of the media reacted to the game?

Just the stuff you'd expect, they worked on a game that is now being thrashed by critics and dogpiled on by the internet.

I don't get the impression they were dissatisfied with the product themselves.

I was asked not to share details. Suffice to say the mood of this indivudal is more or less what you would expect.

"Nightmare" was one word that was used.

I apologise if I'm being harsh, but there must be an element of recognition that the game isn't all they wanted it to be? I realise that they'll be exhausted after crunching, and hugely releived to see it finally done and in the shops, but from seeing the reviews it does seem like it was rushed (yes I know it took years, but it seems like it could have done wih another 12 months in the oven and instead either RaD or Sony decided to cut their losses and release it)

If not then perhaps they're too close to their baby to see it, which is understandable

I only hope that they know what great tech they have, and the possibilities that gives them for giving us an uncharted 2 style comeback.

Can't wait to get my hands on this. First thing tomorrow morning. The reviews have honestly had minimal bearing on my excitement. I know what I'm getting. Hell, I liked Ryse and that got absolutely shitted on. I still replay it from time to time. The impression I get from GAF and a lot of critics is that many seemingly hold every game to certain arbitrary standards across the board. I just don't do that. I don't hold a game like The Wolf Among Us to the same standard as DAI, nor DAI to the same standard as The Order 1886 or Transistor or anything else. I also don't feel like price vs length ratio should be a factor in professional reviews. Yes, a game's length should be mentioned, but the price vs how long a game lasts is something I feel is a decision the consumer should make. At least a game should not be docked for charging $60 at a certain length anyway.

Every individual game I judge it solely based off its merits. I don't factor in "what other games have done" as seems to be much of complaints regarding The Order's design. I don't give a shit about that. It doesn't need "exploration", it doesn't need "new gameplay systems" to set itself apart for me. Ready at Dawn set out with a vision to practically blend film and game, and I think they achieved that here. I'm the kind of person that has immense enjoyment from jumping between a diverse set of games like Transistor and Resogun to GTA, to Elder Scrolls, to The Evil Within, Bayonetta, and to something extremely cinematic and linear like The Order. I'm in love with the variety I have at my leisure, there's more than enough room for The Order in my house. Love it. Bring it on baby.

Awesome post.
It's almost the same idea I have about the videogaming world.
That's why I liked your posts!

Nor should they be. They've done good work here. Like I said, it's not a perfect game, but it's definitely a well made game. They did so much right, but the focus is on where they went wrong.

I want a sequel. I would be there day 1 or minus 1 or whatever.

I don't know. The game seems to have a singular vision and maybe the whole team was on board for it even though the games media didn't see it in the end. Not saying that makes it a good game but perhaps they thought they had executed on that vision and were proud of what they made.

I would imagine very few creators are ever truly satisfied with their product, especially those who consider themselves perfectionists. It always sucks when you want to do more, to be more, but have to accept your own limitations as well as deadlines and budgets.

I have full confidence that given a chance, the sequel would be a much, much better game.

Really though I just cannot fucking wait to play this for myself and see what all the fuss is about.

At the end of the day, I hope RAD survives and learns from the criticism. Perhaps they were a little to dedicated to a certain kind of vision here. The groundwork is laid out. I'd love to see a much improved sequel.

Critical reviews are one thing, that tweet convo & the IGN post...I don't know any other industry where the supporting media behave like that publicly. Music critics especially slag off bends even when they give them good reviews but it's always on private channels.

Pretty shoddy.

I'm going to enjoy this game playing baked

When I play this I will definitely be toked up. I think I'm going to get a lot of enjoyment out of the sheer spectacle of it. The level of visual fidelity on display simply fascinates me. I am a graphics whore, and for that alone this game really has always been on my radar.

I mean sure, this can definitely be argued. But I just struggle to summon any sort of care in what these people say on twitter. They can have at it if they so please.

Ventured briefly into the review thread to check the general reception. Not in the least surprised or bothered, and still looking forward to playing this tomorrow night. ^_^

First impressions after 1.5 hours, first of all russian voice acting is BAD, based Sony that I can change game language by changing system one. Visuals...well its hard to add something new to all the prises game take in that regard. Sound is also strong point of the game, from voice acting to surroundings...and gameplay...generic, absolutely generic in the good way, Im tired of games that uses old mechanics but act like they are second comming and no one ever used that before. Cant comment story, but already love the cast.

*Fist Bump*

List of actions when my copy arrives:

1) Order a Pizza
2) Roll a fatty
3) Put on my surround sound headphones
4) Insert game disc
5) Trip out and game

Amazon switched my delayed package to being set to deliver tomorrow. Right after I changed my delivery address because they said it would arrive next week.

Guess I'm going to be a few hours late getting home tomorrow so I can stop at the office and get it.

How's the gore in the game? What I've seen it looks pretty cool with actual bullet wounds and damage decals. Will some of the larger weapons make significantly more damage gore-wise?

Yeah, I know that might sound like I'm mentally disturbed but it's such a immersion-breaking experience when you play a shooter and there isn't any visual damage on the npc's. I hate it.

It gets worse, there is a 20 score on Metacritic now, just plain calls the game terrible. So far for me it's an 8.
Wow. Somebody's trying to make a name for themselves!

I'm really enjoying it so far too but I'm not that far through it.

From what I recall it really depended on the weapons like shotguns could technically shoot limbs off but I don't remember anything too gory I don't even think I remember seeing bullet holes in enemies upon close inspection I kinda feel like last of us for instance was more gory. But I can't quite recall maybe someone else who played can add some more input.

I'm convinced some of these reviews are a joke. That 20 review that also gave Ryse a 95? I mean in what world is that a fair and unbiased review?

Watching this guy play on Live on PlayStation is painful. Dude is running around side to side not taking cover and trying to lower his voice as he speaks.
