The Order: 1886 |OT| Gears of Yore

Weird, it won't let me select anything other than "Stereo" on the Audio settings page despite the PS4 having an optical out to my receiver. Anyone else have this issue?

I have the same problem - PS4 to my optical receiver. Didn't have any problem with surround on older titlest (The Last of Us, Infamous: Second Son, Killzone: Shadow Fall ect.).

In Order I have just stereo headphones and stereo speakers.

Hope RoD fix this in the next patch.

The enemy encounters are monster closets which end after a set amount of enemies/time has expired. And at least up until Chpt. 6 you can spend most of your time in the exact same cover from which the fights start and never have to leave. That's boring, so if you decide to move around you can, but it shows you had brain dead most of the A.I. can be. AI is really easy to exploit. They'll stay in the same exact place and blind fire from cover it seems indefinitely if you don't engage them. Occasional grenade they'll throw, but mostly they'll chill in the exact same place and blind fire.

Strange. As far as the courtyard (haven't had time to play it since) the enemies have flanked me, changed positions, rushed me (especially those stupid shotgunners - although they do just seem to head towards you Uncharted 3-style) and I've had to move from cover-to-cover as well. If I don't, they're on me.

While not as much of a rush as Gears of War was in terms of bringing a new package to the table, the game is easily top shelf when it comes to visuals, and the gameplay is plain and good. The shooting has a nice and smooth snap to it, with plenty of blur and animation to give it the slick charm so that it at least resembles the masterful mechanics of Gears of War to draw comparisons.

Really not feeling the fact that the game has to take the control of the character even for small actions that didn't need a cutscene/qte at all :/

"Sad" isn't even close to what I think of this situation. I took a quick look at the social media, Facebook, YT, Twitter and wtf.. seriously, check for yourself, the damage is huge thanks to clowns called professional and all those that feel compelled to speak without even having played the game. Power of the internet, baby.
I wonder how much of all this will damage sales.

Very odd. I've been flanked multiple times already and shotgun enemies tend to charge on your position too.

Might be a bug with your game? Seems very similar to other recent 3rd person shooters tbh in regards to AI.

People were earlier saying stereo setting outputs in surround, that not working for you?

I think people should be making more of this. It is disgusting behaviour for journalists from a professional outfit to be shitting on a game like this in public. Sure criticise it in a balanced review, but to do this is out of order.

Kotaku are always one of the first on the moral high ground when anyone else does anything wrong, so they should be totally called out for this. I think it's disgusting.

You're kidding, right?

Hopefully quite a lot? Most people don't like the game, why should they be encouraging people to buy it?

I'm at about 1/3 through Whitechapel & these are my thoughts:

Visuals are amazing. The attention to detail and how it generates the atmosphere is astonishing. Lighting is gorgeous too, and watching Peaky Blinders directly afterwards made me appreciate the grain filter. Movement & animation is generally very good, but there's to occasional second where the characters get green screen effect and don't seem connected to the world. Some if the editing in the cutscenes is a bit jarring too.

Sound equally so - the score is beautiful but the gunshot sounds are on another level. Really meaty, loud.

Gunplay is good & tight. I've been replaying UC2 and the comparison is unflattering to UC2 - although the handling difference between the DS3&4 might account for some of that. I've been flanked, charged & waited out - AI seems inconsistent, but at least marginally reactive to player action. Weapons feel great.

Lycan encounter 1 was...easy once I'd sussed that I was just supposed to shoot them and not look for some special move. Having said that I died enough times while doing if to get the Hunter trophy...

Script & voice acting is top notch. Leaving aside Galahad's actor being a cut-price Sean Bean (but still good) they all bring good characterisation to their avatars. Percival /Sebastian is my surprise favourite character so far, with Izzy getting some good lines.

Overall I'm impressed with the game so far, and if it continues as it is, I think R@D have achieved what they set out to do - make an interactive movie with a strong emotional resonance and solid gameplay.

This game gets better looking as it progresses. Every time I think I'm used to the way it looks, I'll enter a new area and be blown away all over again. Knowing that all of those cutscenes are realtime is blowing my mind.

being critical of the game is fine, but some of those comments just sound like they're having fun piling on which is pretty shitty. 'who can think of the funniest way to slag off this game, its all the rage'

For those of you playing has there been any funny moments between the characters? I guess my question is: is there humor or is it all a dark story?

I'm really enjoying the game so far - well mainly for the story and the visuals. The gameplay itself isn't too bad and something I feel could be fixed in a sequel. The stages themselves, while looking freaking amazing are way too linear and sometimes get in the way of the game. For example, not being able to roll or jump out of the way or over obstacles (like immovable chairs and tables) can be really frustrating in a fight.

The story itself is pretty average but it's told with conviction and delivered with fine dialogue, great characters, and excellent art direction. The start of the game was a bit of a mess too with all the unskippable stumbling / crawling and QTEs. Just let me play the game already.

I'm currently playing on hard with aiming-assist off and it's a nice challenge and not too difficult. Didn't notice the black bars either and the wide FoV is excellentl - 1920 x 800 works well in this instance.

I'd rate the game a solid 7/10 and hope there's a sequel so that RaD can build on the gameplay and design because I think all the ingredients are there for a stellar franchise.

cant wait to dive in..so..want to ask some stuff from people who've played -

Are there melee weapons?
Is it possible to go through the game using only a particular weapon or is the ammo scarce?
Are there a lot of time sensitive sections or can you just mope about looking at the surroundings?
Is there a lot of sneaking?
Can the hud and various nav markers be disabled?

-Yes at certain sections
-Weapons change at certain points, ammo won't run out unless it's something like a thermite rifle you pick up
-No time limit sections, I look around a lot
-2 sneaking sections
-Only HUD is during combat for ammo counters, can't be disabled.

There's some nice sarcastic humour thrown in there every now and then between the knights. Some really typical brit stuff that made me chuckle. Isabeau gets some great ones.

The Kotaku review and those tweets from the last few pages, the image IGN posted on their facebook, etc.

Aka things you don't see from journalists / critics in other fields. Just really unprofessional.

Really? I'm minded of Mark Kermode's film reviews, and if he dislikes something, he's pretty damn scathing about it; and I'd probably think of him as a highly-regarded critic here in the UK.

Terminator: Salvation:
"I guarantee Christian Bale knows it's rubbish and that he's rubbish in it. I can see that look of absolute panic of someone who knows they're doing something they shouldn't be"

Pain and Gain:
"So Michael Bay makes his little art house film to show us into his soul and we find ourselves looking into a voidlike abyss of blackness the depth and enormity of which is impossible to comprehend"

Pirates of the Carribean: At World's End:
"If you go and see Pirates of the Carribean, it's your own fault and you are bringing down the collapse of western civilisation"

Transformers: Dark of the Moon:
"In two years' time when the ship has sunk, society has been reduced to a crying, weeping, wailing child, from this horrible vulgarisation of what is essentially a children's toy, I want a letter saying 'I'm sorry, you were right'"

I wonder if this might be a cultural thing? I'm not seeing a massive problem with the criticism, but I'm used to that sort of cynicism.

Regardless of the options it still outputs in surround sound and the mix is stuff of legends.

Most people.. who? Most of those who didn't play it? Why a game should be damaged by bullshits spread on the web by these people, exactly? We're not talking about legit critics, mind you. Read the comments on the social media that I was talking about.

Ah yeah, I forgot to mention the black bars. They're a non-issue as I knew they would be for me. But then I don't have some idea that my screen space is like a field and needs to be as productive as possible...

As for that Kotaku nonsense...just keep it out if this thread. They're being dicks, just leave it at that.

I love how the Kotaku review starts off with "Do you like movies? Do you like video games? If you answered "yes" to either of those questions, you should probably skip The Order: 1886."

I get the criticism for the game but holy shit could you start a review better than flat out saying you want to roast this game? That shit pisses me off.

Gonna pick this up right after work. I love showing these kinds of games to my family and friends and stuff (ones who get all surprised by the graphics and everything).

I went into this game, honestly, thinking that it would be a borefest with great visuals.

After playing for a bit at work, some people behind me would be like "that's so boriiiing" because it's the popular opinion, but seriously... it's not nearly that bad. It might not be the most exciting game out there, but it's still enjoyable.

Now that I can actually play it relaxed at home, I can appreciate it so much more.

The fact that a lot of critics are being so harsh towards this game and yet so many actual users seem to like the game goes to show you that a big percentage of game "critics" are just average guys trying to be cool with whatever the popular opinion within the game journalism people. I haven't read any actual review besides quotes posted here and there and I don't think I've actually read any review for the past 8 years or so, and I'm surprised that some of you guys still do even though we have GAF here with tons of opinions that, to me, are worth so much more.

At this point my biggest issue with this game is that I am probably going to have it all finished up tonight.

I want more of this. That isn't a bad thing. I think my play through will probably be in the 9-10 hour range.

I have had it since Wednesday.

Exactly why I will never base my purchases off reviews again. Game reviewers are now as bad as movie reviewers. The lower rated a game is these days the better it is.

I am actually happy they come out once in a while. It should be a reminder for the folk that put so much stock in the professionalism of the reviewers in the industry that's frankly non-existant in many cases. And obviously those stupid enough to fall into the twitter trap come up....behind the scenes it's worse if you extrapolate, and in greater number. It really doesn't matter at the end of the day - if people want to put weight into the words of these individuals when making purchasing decisions then they're free to do so. It's a custom per say in the industry, youtube in changing that more and more.

The performances and animations are great, It has pacing and writing issues though and these QTEs are doing my tits in now. They're worse than RE6 which I really never hoped I would ever have to say.

The story overall isn't amazing, but I like all the elements of the era and the characters that they've brought from history into the game, so now I'm just more curious as to how it ends rather than gripped.

Felt exactly the same, could have lasted a bit longer. I'm usually not much of a DLC buyer but I'd probably get weak if a few more chapters were released....

...especially given the relatively open ending. But I guess they simply wanted to leave room for a sequel. Hopefully we will get one one day...

I'm only 2 hours into the game, would you say the QTE's are worse than Tomb Raider? So far at this point I haven't come across many so it would suck if they lay them on thick later in the game.

Most? Game was released today.

I dunno, started playing about two hours ago, it seems a good game to me so far. Nice visuals, great atmosphere, good gunplay.

For me, the stereo option outputs in surround too.
Are there meant to be more options?

I think it's just another case of lazy job at it, I mean look at gamma setting it doesn't even show logos to at all to adjust the setting. Or no option for larger subtitle font.
