Your friendly GAF heads up: Don't get HELLDIVERS on Vita

It is sad to hear about the port but I am always weary of VITA ports of 3D games especially games that are on PS4. It usually is a happier port tale when it is a 2D indiegame.

That is not a bad idea. Hm, gotta ruminate about whether I have the time to collect data on Vita shitports lol

I was thinking more of a community-driven thing. Since opinions are going to vary, having all the reports in the OP would only lead to arguments. When I complained about Borderlands 2 being unplayable, there were some people who got upset and insisted my issues were totally different from what they were experiencing. Better to just let people post their feedback individually.

See this is where we'd have the obvious subjective element, but I gotta say you're definitely correct as far as I'm concerned. Borderlands 2 runs at a disastrous framerate on Vita. I genuinely have no idea how some people came away saying it was better than expected. It was clear that port straight up should never have been made.

This is why I always gotta be careful because some people simply are not sensitive to the problem of framerate, which is problematic to say the least considering how much it impacts visuals and gameplay.

I'll be going against this warning. Vita is the only thing owned (other than PC - which I don't play on). I've seen single player and 2 players play co-op on someone's youtube video recently and it looked fine. Not amazing, but not absolute rubbish either.
I know it's not the best to judge from video (with only 2 people co-op too), but it seems pretty bearable to me. Besides, probably gonna go solo a lot, since I'm not always near access points to MP anyway.

For me any game which consistently runs in the mid 20s in framerate or less is unacceptable, but that's why I put this thread up because you get your heads up and if you buy Helldivers at least you know what you're getting into.

It's in the interest of making sure fellow GAFers and gamers are as informed as possible before they make their buying choices (especially if the are Vita-only owners).

So I'm a unicorn for being a Vita owner without having a PS3 / PS4?

Thanks for the reminder OP, will look into other games launching this week instead.

Don't worry, some people know that territories exist outside of the US and Europe and that there are also plenty of jGAFers who do only own Vita as well. And besides Vita is awesome cardinalmind, you know what's up. :D

Yep, this is how I've gotten burned so many times. I play on PC quite a bit, and it's made me sensitive to unstable framerates.

See, that looks very bad to me. Like slow motion in a lot of places.

yup. Looks completely awful. As I said if you play solitary you can get through the game, it's not at unplayable state (mid 20s at single player most of time), but since the game is so co-op heavy the more players you add the worse it gets and that's pretty unacceptable. Then you're playing with 10-15fps in the bargain for long extended period of times. And if you're able to stomach that, God bless you 'cause I can barely look at it without getting nauseous. And there's a host of other problems small and large that come with the Vita, and the grenade tossing is nasty.

Been playing CounterSpy on Vita and it's been great so far. Loving the gameplay. No complaints on Vita.

See this is the lesson: There's always someone who can stomach a version of a game no matter how bad it is. Consensus is that CounterSpy is completely broken performance-wise, but for Macros it's not an issue. That's why it's good to bring this to everyone's attention then individually you can decide if you want to take risk :)

In the case of Counterspy, I actually don't think it's that bad. There are framerate hiccups, but I haven't experienced any bugs. I certainly wouldn't call it broken or unplayable.

I've endured the very spotty of frame rates from the dawn of the PSP to now, and will still be picking it up on Vita. Hundreds of hours spent online and ad-hoc with Killzone: Liberation, Star Wars Renegade Squadron, Resistance: Retribution, MoH:H, MoH:H2 and the like...

...hell, I even finished SWAT: Target Liberty, and that was a solo mess. I'm still primed. Believe in patches!

Thank you for the heads-up--I would've most likely played the Vita ver first, which would have given me bad impressions of the game.

We're going to need a lot of these threads in future if we're bringing to GAF's attention that some people have performance problems with certain games on certain consoles :p

Not really imo. As long as we stick to the rule that games that consistently are playing below mid 20s framerate, any people who would stomach that would be just something that happens (since the GAF rule is: Any opinion that can be held on GAF, will be held on GAF), because there's no one who would actually defend that sort of framerate as a good framerate :p

Then we can pile on other things, like broken control functionality (lots of ports suffer Vita touchscreen degradation) and significant visual problems and the like.

but it runs fine on PS4 at launch! Not sure what the verdict is on PS3 version...

I'll be genuinely unsurprised if the PS3 version turned out to be running worse than the Vita version, tbh. But yeah, this sort of thing is very much Arrowhead's trademark.

I get it that some people aren´t bothered by a bad framerate.. but this game really gets down to low digits once the action picks up in coop. Maybe some people will forget about it between missions because you have to wait for the mission to load for a long time.
The load times are like 4 or 5 (if not more) times as long as they are on the PS4..

and you have to reload ALOT in this game.. the ammo is sparse, and you have a low number of bulltes in your magazine when you start the game (you can upgrade).. so placing reload on the back touch screen is not smart.

OP there's also people that have a PS3(like me) but only play on Vita. :p

Too bad because i was waiting for this game :( i hope it will be patched.

If you actually read my posts, you would understand what I'm talking about.

i've read the posts on this thread, and anything above 2.5/5 is better than average, that's what the 1-5 scale is made to reflect.

anyhoo, we're just picking your words apart, don't take it so seriously :D

It's hard to say there's hiccups when the whole game is running so poorly to begin with. It's more like framerate strep throat.

Honestly, I wish we'd get away from the idea that a bad port is only bad because you don't fall through the world or stuff like that.

This sucks, a lot. Ive been geared up for this game ever since I first saw it in fucking 2013. With 2 little kids I do most of my gaming on the vita now. Will still try out the vita version, but my dreams of laying in bed beating the shit out of bugs with 3 friends looks like its over. Oh well, at least the ps4 version looks solid.

Maybe I just didn't play it enough? The biggest issue for me was the ridiculous load times. I just loaded it up briefly before posting this, and I still found the framerate to be acceptable. Felt like 30 most of the time.

JAW is still the king of Vita ports, IMO. Stranger's Wrath and Munch's Oddysee are fantastic, and I feel fairly confident that New 'n' Tasty will turn out well.

For the sake of gaming demography, I have a vita but no ps3 or ps4. We may be few but we exist!

Thanks for the advice OP!

Random thought: it's so weird to me that before the Vita was announced, many of us kept thinking that the PSP successor was mainly missing a second analog stock, and then it'd be great. But now the Vita has a bunch of games that really need too many inputs, and now triggers and some form of L3/R3 are the new wishlist items. I guess that's what happens when no one designs specifically for the Vita anymore (and it's hard to blame them I guess).

Yeah, thanks OP, real shame.

Kind of wish it had been caught / held in Certification for stuff like this, but the platform holders don't seem as interested in non-critical issues.

And here I've been charging my Vita and bought a PSN card. I don't know if I'd bother playing as much if it isn't portable. If I have to sit in front of a system, I'm sure to play something else. I was looking forward to this on the go, and I'll probably skip it now.

Hey Scanna, I'm vita only and on the fence here. I was hoping you could comment on this video. Is this indicative of the performance you experienced?

3 and then 4 player is 51 min+ into the video.

Actually, most of my gripes with the Vita version are tied to the button layout and lack of precision due to the analogue sticks.
Graphics are too a concern.
As far as frame-rate is concerned, it can get messy at times, but it's not the biggest offender here, tbh.
