Bloodborne: Impressions After 40 Hours (EDGE)

Its amazing how this developer and series went from niche import game no one thought would ever get released in the us to a major exclusive system seller and flagship game for sony.

While that's likely the case and the reason many people here bought a PS4, we don't have anything to back that yet.
Nope. Barely any weapons. Not even worth a replay. They couldn't even be bothered to finish it.
lol

Bloodborne|OT|: Prepare to Concern

About to revisit Dark Souls, which I never finished. About how much do I have left at Nito?

Sounding really good but I still can't decide whether to get this or to get Borderlands: The Handsome Collection this month.

IMO the Handsome Collection won't retain its value (in terms of price) as long as Bloodborne, so you'd be more likely to find a sale or (even better) a used copy likely sooner. If you're intent on getting both, get Bloodborne first and HC a little later. I think that'll save you money. This is especially true if you're like me and own either BL2 or TPS and will be transferring your characters over.

Maybe it's a bit different now, where sales numbers are a lot easier to find out, but I never thought of From Software as a "niche" developer (even though I might have just been a lover of niche games from the start), but I've been playing their games since the mid 90s.

I get what you're saying though. They are finally getting what's due to them I think.

edge review looks like it's gonna be high, but you never know. some reviewer may feel that it's too difficult and lower the score

i never doubted the game will gonna be amazing tho

It would be extremely odd to see anything lower than an 8.5 with statements like:

If you thought From Software was going soft, Hidetaka Miyazaki is about to put you brutally back in your place. And if you've been watching this generation from the sidelines, unmoved by the remasters and rush jobs while you wait for the first true essential to arrive, now's the time. As if there was ever any doubt, Miyazaki and his team have done it all over again.

To me that reads as "If you remotely liked Demon's Souls or Dark Souls, you'll probably like this game too. Fans on the other hand will eat this shit up!".

The one true method. Fighting bosses online is akin to cheesing in my eyes. However, I can play completely offline so doesn't bother me!

You can still summon phantom NPCs offline. A lot of the time too they are actually superior to other players. I can't count how many times where I've not felt like bothering with specific, annoying bosses during the lower SLs in Dark Souls 2 only to have summoned players just stand there doing nothing. At all. All this did was make the boss much harder than if I had been doing it solo intentionally from the start.

Apologies if it's been discussed and I missed it, but have they touched on how approachable Bloodborne is for newcomings to their games?

I briefly played Demon's Souls (PS+ freebie), couldn't get into it, and thus never touched the Dark Souls games. Bloodborne is peaking a bit of interest from me, but I'm worried about the brutal difficulty, cheap deaths, and replaying large chunks that (I've heard) were staples of the Souls games. Restarting lengthy sections and boss fights over and over and over again is a huge turn-off to me.
Same questions Ive been meaning to ask as well!

this might not be a popular opinion but i really don't like how "badass" the character animations and weapons etc are, at least from what i've seen.

i miss this:

http://demonssouls.wdfiles.com/local--files/versions/box-art-ch.jpg

to me that's what the Souls series was about.. your character being a weakling. now it seems they've gone fully badass :( if i wanted to be a fast-moving ninja busting combos and shit, i'd play Ninja Gaiden. i LOVED the feeling of being a weak nobody in Demon's Souls, just trying to survive against the odds.. that's what initially drew me in. i want more of that.

oh well, i'm sure the game will be fine still. i just really hope i get to play as a pathetic weakling for at least the first few hours. don't immediately give me a giant hammer and a shotgun please.. after 20 hours maybe.

If the Alpha is indicative then you are never a "badass". The enemies behave totally different and absolutely vital that you have speed as they are on you quick and don't let up. It also plays like a quicker Souls with more options at your disposal. Some work better than others and learning and patience is the name of the game, it might appear quicker but you still have to bide, watch your surroundings and manage your health & stamina, it never feels like a hack and slash. Use all your bullets on the wolves and you are going to have to learn the hard way with the cleric beast, you have to think not rush.

I find it strange that people are questioning a preview on what is in the game, most of the depth of any of the Souls games was discovered by the community not the press.

I got both pre-ordered digitally. Probably a mistake since I want to play Bloodborne, but I know Borderlands will get most of my attention. Regardless, both games will get a lot of play through the summer.
I've goy money waiting in my US PSN account and I keep adding a game to the basket and then change my mind. I like the sound of this because it's close enough to the Souls games to be one of them but also different enough to be something new.
Borderlands is likely to drop in price faster.

yeah, I'm expecting Borderlands to get cheaper quicker than this but as I haven't played the two games I sort of want to play it more. It's not exactly something to complain about though is it, having a couple of what should be fantastic releases this month. There's still time to decide but there is the relatively insignificant bonuses that you get by preordering this which pushes me in this direction.

I don't think there's really a bad choice though, just two good choices! :)

This is not Dark Souls III. This is Bloodborne.

The people in here throwing concern around here need to realize this. It is a completely different game, only with a somewhat familiar framework and developer mindset.
That doesn't fucking mean it should exceed every number count bullet point of Dark Souls. The 7 weapons shown all look to have way more variety and style than all of DS weapons combined. Do you honestly think Miyazaki and co don't realize why people love these games or how people play them? Please. This is just taking another direction with transformable weapons, guns and tools, I can't wait.

The impressions are fucking glowing, 'First Essential Next-gen Game' is higher praise than I would have even imagined.

I'm okay with a smaller amount of weapons if there's a huge variety between weapons. If there are only 20 weapons in the game, and 15 of them are broadswords with slightly different tweaks, I'd be annoyed. But if each weapon plays drastically differently I'm cool with that.

Not much. A few bosses, depending on what other great souls you have gathered.

I think if you can't get into Dark Souls or Demons Souls it's not gonna be your cup of tea. The games share a lot of design similarities. I played the alpha and I was impressed with how hard it was. I expect they have tuned back the difficulty for release, but it will still be tough, I assume. My advice is play Demons Souls with a guide and see if that helps you get into it. If you like it that way, then try Dark Souls blind or move onto BB.

"Discrete areas flow together to create a believable world" - separating the hub from the main gameworld allows the world itself to be more coherent, interconnectivity is present and very complex throughout the game - they compare it directly to Dark Souls' "falling apart" in the second half and say that unlike Dark Souls, Bloodborne maintains its dense, interconnected world design through the other game. They say several areas rival Firelink Shrine in terms of interconnectivity.

That's a megaton for me. The level design of the first half of Dark Souls was really ingenious. There were so many surprising shortcuts. This is the most hyped I've been for a game in almost 3 years.

Is this game going to be as obtuse as Dark Souls? I don't mind difficulty, but not explaining the game fully is just annoying.

The fact there's not to many weapons doesn't bother me for the fact they can be upgraded with dmg poison etc... What about gear and armor?

Bloodborne|OT|: Sing a Song of Sixpence

I like that one

All this thread has done is make me want to go play all those games again naked in the tub starting with Demon's and never stopping

Until the 24th

Edge isn't one of those places that doesn't consider Wii U next gen right? If not, then that's even more glowing praise.

Maybe they've dropped having multiple versions of the same weapon? Maybe there's no more concern of, "Do I want to upgrade this longsword when I might find one that has better base damage by 8?" I'm fine with that.

Is the general consensus that this game will be easier or more user friendly for players that never really got into demon souls?

That game seems just as difficult, but it might be somewhat easier to approach in terms of obtuse mechanics etc. I think if you didn't like Demon's you probably won't be into this either.

On the other hand, I'd recommend giving Demon's or Dark another try if you have the games already. These games can take a while (5 hours or more) to "click". If you did give it a good try, then pay me no mind!

My God. I did Dark Souls and Dark Souls 2 offline/solo. It was incredible.

Same. I think I played with someone against S&O which I'm sure some hardcore would point and giggle at me for, but honestly it was such an epic experience as I went after one and the other person went after the other. It was unlike anything I'd experienced in a game before.

I did do Demon's Souls solo though. That one took forever. I got through most of Dark Souls without too much of a problem. The hardest section for me was the big library place followed by the crystal caverns. Fuck me.
