Digital Foundry: GTA V PS4 and Xbox One compared in new frame-rate stress test.

This is what i was saying last year when DF was talking all crazy last year. Was hoping by now someone else would have stepped up with a no bias agenda.

I think these versions are both serviceable, but if you are the type of person that would never consider buying a PC, this is the generation to finally make that change.

I'm a bit dissapointed in the analysis of DF to be honest. Not saying they are lying or baised, but they do not seem to be very thorough or in depth and miss a lot of things.

Same here.

They only seem to focus on resolution and framerate while missing everything else that's visually going on.
Not only that, but they also have problems qualifying and quantifying framerate differences.
There's a complete lack of statistic analysis to define whether the differences are significant or not, what is the standard variation, the median, etc ....

And even then they do a half-assed job. Why is there no actual data of their framerate tests? Not even basic shit like minimum framerate and average framerate.

x1 version here, digital one.

Lots of framerate drop while driving. Really annoying.
Weird. Me and a buddy have been playing since last weekend on our Ones. No noticeable slowdown in all the time we've played. Heavy traffic or not. Only thing I've noticed, and was surprised by, was some pop in when zooming in on the scope. Wasn't expecting pop in in an instance like that.

Also had a weird thing happen when looking down at a dead body with a pool of blood. I turned the camera away from the body but still looking down and the blood was being wiped away. Turn the camera back, and the blood reappears. It was like a filter laying a cover over the blood as I turned.

Maybe they did and thought the odd dip at that level of detail was better than scaling everything back for only a limited performance boost at 30fps.

Digital Foundry's framerate test shows a locked 30fps for most of the time on PS4.

If that is a fair assessment of how the game performs, then I really don't see it as a major problem.

Literally every game with framerate drops there'll be people who claim this. Like they have some super console that's faster than everyone else's.

Or they're just enjoying the game and not constantly scrutinising the performance. I'm pretty much like that, even though I like to know my money is well spent.

so you like to know how good the framerate is... even though you don´t notice it even if it is below 30fps..?

why..? to give yourself a pad on the back and say "hey I bought the ´slightly´better version of a game"..? serioulsy why if you don´t even notice it..?

I check framerate tests to see if I should stay away from a version of a game..

Pretty sure it's because they don't notice it, therefore it means absolutely nothing to them, in most cases. If there have been frame rate drops in this game on X1 for me, I haven't noticed it at all.

I'm coming off of Unity, so it runs like a dream in comparison, though.

Seriously, what is this mentality? Is everything on this site black and white?

NO, when I buy something I like to know I'm getting the best deal I can. Pat on my back ... Jesus Christ.

If there was two TVs, one at 900p and one at 1080p and they were both the same price, I'd buy the 1080p version regardless of whether I could see the difference. If there was two identical cars, one with a top speed of 90mph and one with a top speed of 100mph, I would buy the one at 100mph, even if I never ever intended to go that fast. If I had a choice between two music systems, one with a 5 speaker set up and one with a 7 speaker set up, I would buy the one with a 7 speaker set up, even if I only intended to use 5. Why wouldn't you? You'd be absolutely stupid to buy the worse version when the better version was the same price. Why is that difficult to understand?

It's knowing you are getting better value and knowing that value could be realised in the future, even if it's not realised now.

'I've got two for sale. This one runs slightly better than this one.'
'Are they the same price?'
'Yes.'
'Can you tell the difference?'
'No.'
'I'll have the inferior version please.'

Insanity.

Some Neogaf users should become reviewers (and I'm not talking about Hindle). Take Bish for example. He seems level-headed. His verdict of a game can be given in a gif form with his signature avatar.

see I still don´t really understand it.. If I wouldn´t notice a difference between 2 game versions on the fps department, then I wouldn´t care what version I bought. BECAUSE I CAN`T SEE THE DIFFERENCE.. ;o) I can´t use the 2fps or whatever the difference was to anything because I can´t see it anyway..

I´m not trying to be obtuse and I´m not trying to downplay your opinion.. I just would like to understand.. bacause I can´t in this instance.

The only issue I have with this DF analysis is the slightly devious nature of it. I'm not THAT bothered personally about framerates (if they're only 1 - 3 drops). If I notice them then they ARE bad.

Even if the analysis was balanced and the XB1 still won, it wouldn't bother me because I can't see the difference between very slight dips anyway. Some can, I know that, but I can't. I'm just pointing out that given a choice between two things that appear identical but one is slightly better, most people would opt for the better version regardless. It's a natural human instinct, not some 'pat on the back' mentality.

The XB1 version looks bloody marvellous to me. It's only in comparative conversations that I feel the need to redress any misconceptions or falsehoods. I fell out with lots of Playstation fans over at N4Gs because I said I hated Infamous and Killzone, so I'm certainly not the sort of person who would just back something because of a brand. I also got flack for praising Sunset Overdrive, which I'd LOVE to come to the Playstation.

That's the problem with conversations on the internet. They're polarising in nature and inevitably lead to friction between the camps. If I was going to break it down, as I did last gen when people wanted to know the best console to buy for multiplats, I'd put it this way. Just for multiplats mind, everything else is subjective:

1: If you have an XB1 and a PS4, buy the PS4 version
2: If you have the XB1 only, then enjoy the game because it's great on that system
3: If you're looking into buying a new console for multiplats then buy the PS4 because a lot of them are better on that system. Slight or otherwise.

I told my friends to buy a 360 last gen but this gen I'd tell them to buy a PS4.

That video is a fairly poor example. During that first very scripted race through the city the framerate holds up, it's when you're driving around the city during the rest of the game when the framerate dips frequently. Sure it's pretty much locked at 30 everywhere else, which is certainly the majority of the game, but it would be nice if the framerate wasn't so damn choppy driving around the city.

This is a far better example of the city driving experience. The parts where it's at 30 are mostly when they're driving slow.

What we need is a Chrome plugin that adds the line "Whatever PS4 version is the best in all aspects" below every DF article apparently.

Nope, we need more than one tech analyser.

X1 always had dips during explosions and intense sequences. It seems they just managed to fix whatever caused the ps4 drops.

Pretty much. DF:

However, the new patch is uniformly bad news for Xbox One owners. Parallax occlusion mapping is gone on the Microsoft platform too, but there are no plus points to the 1.09 version that we could find - performance is mostly a match for the launch game. Indeed, in one area, we actually see lower reported frame-rates compared to our original analysis.

Overall, it's a somewhat bizarre state of affairs. The smoother frame-rates on the current build of Grand Theft Auto 5 are clearly a boon for PlayStation 4 owners, with the overall performance profile of the game now shifting ahead of the Xbox One version in all areas - something that definitely wasn't the case during the game's launch period.

Pretty much. DF:
So strange. It's not that it pushed it in front of the One in terms of performance, but just fixing it so it's a flat 30 is enough to sell it for me.

Having not watched the video, is it really flat 30 across the board? Or just 99% of the time?

Isn't that what this thread you posted in is already about? Probably didn't need to bump this thread from November 2014.

I think that video wasn't even posted in the thread, and that was also not what the thread is about. Also I did not think this warrants a new thread, so this one is right on topic.

It's more like 99 I think. There are some rare drops to 28-29. From my experience there are still rare drops in mp, but I did not see any in sp so far after my limited time with the game recently.

Oh boy.. Can we all just get along? Both versions players will enjoy.

This.

Why do we need to keep doing this?

People will not be comparing the XB1 and PS4 versions when they play the game. They will play the game and deal with whatever issues may or may not actually get their attention.

People will not be looking at a FPS # when they play, they'll be playing.

Why do we need to keep doing these comparisons?

The videos don't match up with the content don't match up with the article. Then I saw who wrote it and realised DF really needs a more objective source doing this stuff now for comparisons for their own sake because their comparisons are usually spot on

A fair number of people will be noticing when a framerate isn't smooth, and that will affect their enjoyment of the game. Knowing more about the performance of each version will help them decide whether or not to buy the game at full price, wait for a sale or a patch, etc.

I get that you don't care, but you're not required to post in DF threads.

PS4 version sucked right out of the gate for me. First mission you do after the intro had tons of framerate drops similar to what I was seeing on 360. Now that's pretty much all been fixed. Good work, Rockstar. It makes driving through the city during the daylight hours so much more fun.

Why do people come into a tech comparison thread to say things like "both versions are great! just enjoy them"?

Because they're trying way too hard to be impartial or show that they don't have some kind of bias. It's cute.

If you don't like the comparison discussion, then don't fucking participate in it. I'm not sure why that's so hard for some people to figure out.

Who's "people"?

"People" own both Xbone and PS4 (in fact you'll find plenty of these "people" on this forum you're posting on). As such, they would like to be informed on which version they should purchase to get the best experience. They are quite literally "comparing" the XB1 and PS4 versions..."

No one should take anything Leadbetter says seriously. Ever.

If for some reason you don't know why, read this:
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-final-fantasy-xiii-face-off

This "article" remains one of the worst examples of DF's "technical analysis" and is also one of the worst pieces of "gaming journalism" ever written. You have to realize that Eurogamer keeps Leadbetter and DF around because he generates a million hits. The substance of what he writes is irrelevant, his being a flaming Xbox fanboy only makes him a more interesting and controversial writer who makes EG more money.
