What Does Sony Have For The Holidays?

Circinus

Does it still count as first party when the developer is third party? The same could be said of Sly: Theives in Time.

Yes. First-party just means funded and published by a publisher that is part of Sony Computer Entertainment / Microsoft / Nintendo.

There are internally developed first-party games by subsidiary studios and externally developed first-party games by independent studios.

Well let's be honest, ever since Uncharted 4 was delayed this topic of what Sony has for the holiday season has spread like wildfire. When folks ask that question, what they're really saying is "What does Sony have in their first-party roster than can compete with their main competitor Microsoft?" The third-party software for both the PS4 and Xbone will be there in droves, so the main thing that separates both systems and defines them is their exclusive content. As of now, exclusive wise - and this is obviously subject to change with E3 approaching - it's looking like Ratchet & Clank is Sony's big holiday season title. And while that game will probably (hopefully!) be good, it hasn't got nearly the same commercial prospects that a juggernaut franchise like Halo does. It's not really about catering to the same audiences but rather, what exclusive does Sony have that'll convince your average gamer out there to splash out on a PS4 rather than a Xbox One? Uncharted 4 used to be the answer to that question, but now that's not happening.

Eh, it's probably all irrelevant anyway. Sony will end up selling more systems this fall through a partnership with a third party and its game than they will through a first-party effort. Unless they release Gran Turismo 7 or something.

I agree.

But keep in mind Ratchet & Clank is a bigger franchise than Uncharted. =)

Between Wii U, XB1, PS4, Ratchet & Clank is probably going to be biggest first-party for the whole year of 2015*.

*Besides Halo 5 and Rise of the Tomb Raider.

Wait so we can play battlefront first on xbox one(EA ACCESS TWEETS) ...

but it's being touted as a sony exclusive according to OP?

I'm confused.

We know the following games are coming in 2015 -

Dragon Quest Heroes
Persona 5
Ratchet & Clank Redux
RIME
The Tomorrow Children
No Man's Sky
Tearaway Unfolded
Disgaea 5

I don't see what's wrong with this line up? Seems like plenty for PS4.

Ratchet & Clank?

You realize this Sony Computer Entertainment's biggest franchise (in terms of units sold and besides Gran Turismo). Ratchet & Clank is the king of the action-platforming genre.

I'd say it's the other way around. If something like Quantum Break or Forza 6 would get released near Ratchet & Clank, it would get destroyed by Ratchet & Clank. ^.^

Ratchet & Clank will release in November or October I think. And that would be totally fine. ^.^

Ratchet & Clank is undoubtedly going to be the biggest first-party exclusive game being released for any platform this holiday!! (besides Halo 5: Guardians, and maybe Tomb Raider if we count that as first-party)

It is? How well did the likes of One 4 All, Full Frontal Assault and Into the Nexus sell? Because from what I've been led to believe, the franchise has been on a downward trajectory for some years. Maybe if it wasn't a budget release it would've done better, but from what I recall Into the Nexus came and went with few people even noticing.

I don't mean to cause offense, and I admire your passion in a way, but you sound like a massively deluded fan with that post.

To be fair, we don't know if you can play it first on Xbox One. If Sony has the marketing deal, they may have a beta also.

But if Sony's sales lead in the first 9-10 months is completely erased in the holidays, don't you think there's a problem with that strategy?

But if MS's sales lead during the last 1-2 months is completely erased in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd quarter, don't you think there's a problem with that strategy?

Where did you get that impression from? They seem to have Marketing partnership that's what the OP is saying. It's been confirmed for PC/XB1/PS4 for a while now.

That has happened with every recent EA release so it's not surprising.

SO DOES M$. Not catching your point

Wat???.gif

By what metric?! If you're going by total sales then yeah, that's because Ratchet & Clank has been around much longer than Nathan Drake. Otherwise, as things stand now, there's no way R&C is bigger than Uncharted. No way.

Not AAA enough, so doesn't count as real games.

I agree with the sentiment. R&C is good and all but nothing really stands out this holiday season so far...

If we want to get into speculation we are going into two years into the PS4 and the only real game that was developed by SCE was Killzone LBP and knack right? I am probably missing some that's all I can remember. I have a hard time believing that nothing from WWS is coming out this Fall/holiday.

I'm assuming another inFamous DLC, expansion pack maybe. But like most people are saying wait for E3. Though I would love a reason to play my Xbox One more often. . I haven't even went through one battery cycle on my Xbox One controller yet since I barely touch it.

Yes.

Gran Turismo is >60 million iirc
Ratchet & Clank is >27 million
God of War is >21 million
Uncharted is like ~18 million or something
LittleBigPlanet was ~10 million or something

Killzone I have no idea, but I would guess around the ~8 million ballpark. inFamous probably around that number as well, little bit lower perhaps.

So yes, Ratchet & Clank is SCE's biggest franchise besides Gran Turismo.

I have no idea how One 4 All, Q-Force/Full Frontal Assault and Into the Nexus sold. I haven't played any of those 3 yet. (I should definitely catch up with Into the Nexus this year)

And no, Into the Nexus was received very well. Both critically and by users/Ratchet & Clank fans. A lot of people on NeoGAF seem to be dismissing Into the Nexus just because it's not a full-length 12-hour long game.

Icyflamez96 will make a topic about Ratchet & Clank: Nexus soon.

by amount of games released lol

He's using the good games per shitty spinoff ratio, so obviously Ratchet and Clank will be bigger. :p

Yes, your limited taste in games is indeed depressing.

What amazing games on PS4 are coming out that aren't going to be on PC? Bloodbourne is the only one right now, and Uncharted + Ratchet and Clank are the only ones in the future that are important sellers.

If they release Ratchet & Clank in November, it'll get destroyed. If they release it in October, it'll probably get destroyed. That duo just doesn't have the sway to divert attention away from the likes of Halo, let alone the usual annualised fodder shat out by Activision and Ubisoft. They better release that game in September or delay it to early next year, otherwise there will be another LBP3 failure on Sony's hands.

I have no real interest in the PS4 this year, but if they release a good R&C I'll find it hard to resist!

By total sales. I know it's a bit of a misleading comparison if you want to compare the current popularity of both franchises, but yeah it just fit my argument that way. :p

Uncharted 4 is definitely much more likely to outsell a new Ratchet & Clank.

Though maybe if the Ratchet & Clank film becomes a behemoth of a movie hit at the box office, that it can become bigger than Uncharted (in terms of what a new installment would sell).

Kind of depressing that I can't imagine buying another PS4 game until Uncharted.

Honestly not sure why you would buy a PlayStation console if you're not interested in games such as Tearaway, No Man's Sky, Persona, The Witness, Ratchet & Clank, Rime, etc. Those may not be big budget games but they're vintage PlayStation.

it makes me sad that people care so much about who has "marketing" for which games.

Most of the concern is about PS's sales this Holiday, so it makes sense that would be a discussion point.

But yeah, it does get pretty pathetic sometimes how badly gamers want to be wooed by PR and so forth.

Since the question here can slant towards #gamerconcern or #businessconcern, the marketing of games actually matter a lot for the latter, as proven by last year's highly successful Destiny partnership, which I think we can say without any proof whatsoever probably sold more PS4s than LBP3, Driveclub and Order combined.

I felt like we've had multiple of these threads already. I know I certainly remember this one from a month ago.

So I guess I'll just update the list I made then ...

PS4 Exclusive:

Darksiders 2: Definitive Edition (Holiday 2015)
Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance (October)
Dragon Quest Heroes (2015)
Ether One (2015)
No Man's Sky (2015)
Persona 5 (2015)
Ratchet and Clank (2015)
Witness (2015)

XBO Exclusive:

Forza Motorsport 6 (Q4 2015)
Halo 5: Guardians (October)
Rise of the Tomb Raider (Q4 2015)

Multi-platform:

Assassin's Creed: Victory (Q4 2015)
Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 (Fall 2015)
Dead Island 2 (2015)
Just Cause 3 (Q4 2015)
LEGO Avengers (Fall 2015)
LEGO Dimensions (September)
Mad Max (September)
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (September)
Rainbow Six: Siege (2015)
Rock Band 4 (2015)
Star Wars: Battlefront (November)
Tom Clancy's The Division (2015)

There's also typically 1-2 big games per system announced at E3 and then released during the holiday season of the same year. So I expect a few wildcards to show up in June.

No. That is extremely unlikely to be exclusive.

Agreed.

I find it cringe-worthy as well as how people can be so obsessive over these exclusives as well.

I mean, I love Zelda and Ratchet & Clank for example, but I don't care about about Zelda/Ratchet & Clank just because it's an exclusive. I care about because it's an amazing franchise with amazing games!

I only would applaud it if these franchises would be multiplatform and more people could experience these amazing games. Of course that isn't going to happen, because SCE's and Nintendo's business model doesn't work like that. And that's fine. I think it's a fair business model.

I bought a PlayStation console because Sony money hatted FROM Soft. My hands were tied, surely as based Miyazaki's were when Shu Yoshida pelted him with stack after stack of yen.
