I don't see where the W101 comparisons are coming from. Splatoon has had bigger press than W101 had since it was revealed. I'm not expecting it to sell gangbusters but it's gonna do much better than W101.
No, it's 1 v 1. One on the gamepad and the other on the TV. The mode they showed off has you trying to pop balloons while fending off your opponent
I'm optimistic for a couple of reasons:
-amiibo (and the way it helped Mario Party 10 chart on NPD)
-strong previews/reviews/word-of-mouth, unlike W101
-marketing effort. I saw a big poster for this in the storefront window of an EB yesterday
-lack of anything else on WiiU. Starved userbase who bought WiiU for Kart/Smash
-looks absolutely fun, engaging, and easy to pick-up-and-play
-my baseless speculation that an inkling will be a DLC character in Smash Bros.
Launching at the tail end of May will make it hard to know how it does in the NPD tracking. I suspect it'll sell close to 250k in it's opening month in NA, and I think it'll come-close and might even crack 100k in Japan. It'll probably end up with 750k sales worldwide, which I think will be considered fairly successful for WiiU. Anything north of 750k is a major success, anything south of 500k would be a disappointment.
Just like Xenoblade Chronicles, it will probably do well enough to get a sequel. I think Nintendo knows what to expect from the Wii U at this point.
Isn't the single-player campaign just offline bot matches but with objectives?

Bomb as in it's destined for cult classic status. I want it to do well, but a new IP on such a small install base doesn't sound promising.please explain what a bomb is to you, saying that this will outright bomb is such a pessimistic thing, I mean, they're marketing it a hell of alot more than W101 and codename STEAM. Do you guys only think in terms of games either bombing or being the biggest thing since bread?
Its totally going to flop. It doesnt have anything the mainstream audience want.
With the advertising Splatoon is getting, not even close.Nah I expect it to be the next Wonderful 101
Majority of Nintendo fans will ignore it because Mario and co. ain't there
Seriously? It's new, colorful, fast-paced, and fun. The Skylanders generation will eat Splatoon up.
The problem with W101 was that the only demographic that seemed interested in it were adult Nintendo fans. It also had atrocious marketing and an awkward title.

Fortunately for Splatoon, it's getting tons of positive buzz from those who've played it.You can advertise something no one is really interested in as much as you want, people still won't buy it.
That's why I think it'll do well enough to warrant a sequel on the next system. Nintendo probably has their expectations in check as far as Wii U software sales go.I think it will do decent in sales but in terms of becoming a big new Nintendo franchise? No. The Wii U is doing too bad for it to ever have a new IP become a big hit in my opinion.
I don't think it will be a system seller.
Sunset Overdrive was new, colorful, fast-paced, and fun and I think that game only ended up doing alright.
Yea and Xbox One is gonna end the generation losing to the ps4 by a nose.Fair enough.
To clarify myself: It will bomb even considering the low install base of the U. More than the W101 (less is almost impossible; so that's not saying much) but nowhere near as close as to warrant calling it a major IP.
I'd say about 150k lifetime, if even that.
It had a marketing push. W101 barely got any.
It will probably do average-ok first week sales, then disappear into the vortex of forgotten games hovering somewhere above its epicenter at Konami.
Not quite true. It's awareness that was W101's problem: People barely knew such a game existed, and even then they kind of...didn't get it until they played it. It doesn't help the similarities to Pikmin were kind of close.I have a feeling even with a marketing push W101 would have still sold below expectations.
The majority of people back then and now just aren't interested in the Wii U.

That's kinda hard to do given the marketing Splatoon is getting compared to Bayonetta 2....unless the game sucks.I'm not sure it will sell better than Bayonetta 2.
Already done
Like I said before, it'd be a miracle if the n3DS ran Splatoon at 30fps with reduced graphics. If anything, Splatoon would get a sequel on the next console.
How3DS should be getting a version next year or late this year.
Let me look inside my arse... oh, here it is. 800k WW by the end of the year, sequel on the next home console.
That's the local-multiplayer mode.
You guys should watch the Direct on Friday. I bet we'll see some new stuff on the single-player, maybe some new modes. I doubt they'll just regurgitate info if they have a dedicated direct.
My mistake, I thought he was asking about local multi. Yeah, the single player mode is a Mario Galaxy-esque platformer type game. It's likely not going to be anywhere near as fleshed out or long as that, but yeah. He'a asking about the story mode, not Battle Dojo.
The single-player mode is very much its own thing. Here's a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEpl1LQ3k0M
If Iwata goes through with his "two consoles, one OS" idea with most of the games being shared across both systems, this is possible (given that the next portable is up to the task from a technical standpoint).Seeing as how the next console and handheld will be getting the same games it'll be on both. 😃

Its on the Wii U for starters(Im not hating on the console calm down) And it is going after shooter crowd and the normal nintendo crowd. It really is going to be put out to die. It will have a small cult following but nothing more.Seriously? It's new, colorful, fast-paced, and fun. The Skylanders generation will eat Splatoon up.
