Do we expect Splatoon to be the next major Nintendo I.P.?

Its on the Wii U for starters(Im not hating on the console calm down) And it is going after shooter crowd and the normal nintendo crowd. It really is going to be put out to die. It will have a small cult following but nothing more.

To be fair...I don't really play ANY shooters except when I'm with a friend playing co-op on his system. The genre just really isn't my favorite. Yet, from the second this was revealed, I was enthusiastic about this game due to the gameplay and art style. Squid form sold me on it. I think about it more like a shooter/platformer, especially since you're not scored based on skills (in the revealed modes). It's kind of like how I loved Portal because it was a shooter/puzzle game.

EDIT: Though I will admit I'm a part of the Nintendo crowd. That said, Nintendo announces and releases games that I don't buy or am only lukewarm towards for various reasons. This one got my attention.

Seems like the nintendo faithful "buy anything nintendo" crowd are all in on this, and a few who are generally interested in the game are down for it.

Just seems like all the noise about this title is from Nintendo themselves which is never a good sign. Everyone who played it kinda had that same "its fun..." reaction but not that "its and I completely plan to buy/hype this title" that we get from other hands on impressions. Count me in the its gonna bomb camp, despite what I expect to be positive impressions. Maybe not a total failure but definitely not up to Nintendo first party numbers.

What are you talking about?

I can agree with this for the most part, but if I remember correctly Mario Kart 8 didn't exactly have crazy hype until right before release, so there's still time.

There's a direct this week. I imagine after that they'll start marketing more and then about a week later we might get reviews (I think MK8 had reviews like 2 weeks early?)

Depends on the reviews and word of mouth. If it's really good, Nintendo fans will pick it up and it should do fine. 1 million is guaranteed IMO.

If it reviews well I could see Nintendo stepping up their marketing. The last thing they need is to squander a new, well-received IP.

Current Wii U owner base is about 100% core demographic. It has nice characters that do well as Amiibo. I'm pretty positive this game will reach the 1M mark. Though not a lot more. Whether it can become a franchise kind of depends on how they can expand it.

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.
There's actual marketing behind Splatoon, at the very least it will do decently.

70% of Wonderful 101's failing was the complete lack of marketing (releasing it two days before GTA V in North America seriously didn't help). They also did a bad job explaining it was an action game similar to Bayonetta.
Despite what people say, it's not 'impossible to market". It's a Sentai-tribute (or Power Rangers tribute) action game. If Chroma Squad can do decently being a Sentai-tribute turn based strategy game (a genre way less popular than action), they could have at least tried here.
I really don't get why Nintendo didn't try...

It'll be around an 85 Metacritic rating but I would be shocked if it sells well.

Still expecting multiple sequels based on the rabid fanbase however - the series will develop a solid following.

It has the potential to be an important new IP for Nintendo however WiiU lack of success in the market will hurt the overall sales potential.

I think it'll bomb pretty hard. Not quite 101 bad, but close.
Splatoon has far more potential than W101 ever had IMO.

Clearly, Nintendo wants it to be.

Frankly, I want it to be too.

The game looks like a blast, and the more people who buy it the better the online experience will be. And it would encourage Nintendo to take more risks in the future.

That said... I'm not so sure it will sell well. There is a buzz behind it, so it'll sell more than say W101 numbers, but probably much less than they want.

I'm pretty sure Splatoon won't be the sale giant some people expect it to be.
Most of us aren't expecting Splatoon to pull MK8 or Smash 4 numbers. Though it'll probably be a Pikmin-tier success, just enough for a sequel on the next console. I think Nintendo's scaling their expectations relative to the instal base of the Wii U. That & the Amiibos will net a pretty penny for Splatoon overall as an IP.

I hope it is. It has a lot of personality, great character design, and the gameplay is something very new for Nintendo. Would love to see more stuff this direction. And hopefully encourage nintendo to build more new IP.

Does anyone think it'll be a sales giant? I'm thinking that it's possible to reach 1 million or close. For Wii U, about 8 "million sellers" exist, and a couple around 500-750k like DK (not sure if it passed those numbers yet).
I'll change my prediction if the reception is worse than expected. The biggest problem with a lot of these games is that they haven't received heavy promotion, but Splatoon has so far.
I don't think it'll match MK8 or Smash, but it should easily do at least DK numbers or become a million seller.

It'll do alright.

Enough that Nintendo will finance a cartoon series and Splatwon on their next handheld which will sell amazingly.

Gotcha. So which would we consider more of a bomb? W101 numbers, or STEAM numbers?

I haven't been following this game. Maybe the direct will convince me to get it.
W101 numbers. I think Code Name: STEAM sold around 31k in March alone (it was a recent release).

It'll do alright.

I still think they'll save the sequel for their next console rather than handheld (if not both, given the whole "two systems, one OS" thing). If the 3DS is anything to go by, the next portable will likely be a tiny bit below the Wii U. I'm guessing the devs would want more power to play with as far as making a Splatoon sequel goes.

Considering this is the first Wii U game I've ever pre-ordered months in advance.... Yeah it's definitely going to do well.

Days like these...

I've dabbled in shooty games. I've even made a thread here on GAF asking for good shooty games to play. I think this game will be a mid tier size hit and appeal to more people than the typical shooty dudebro fan.

It's a Wii U game that doesn't have Mario, Zelda or Smash in the title. It could be the best game ever. It's still going to bomb. Best case scenario it becomes the Wii U's Tearaway.

It will become a major IP if Nintendo wants to run with it in the future. That's just how they work, you feel.

Sales of this game will not seal its fate either way in that regard.

I think they know they've got something very popular amongst fans so I imagine we'll see more Splatoon in future, yes.

Nintendo doesn't know how to nurture new IPs and excels at missing opportunities, so I expect Splatoon to experience mediocre success and then Nintendo will fumble the IP into the grave.

Define 'major'.

I think it'll bomb hard to be honest. The Wii-U userbase is far too small and I don't think there's a big crowd there itching for a team-based multiplayer shooter.

At this point all that extra power is going towards graphics, the mechanics can stay the same.

I'm not optimistic due to the Wii U's small userbase. If this was a 3DS game it might have the potential to really take off, filling a void in the 3DS multiplayer library. A 3DS version would enjoy the flexibility of local wireless to supplement online play.

Based on what I have seen, I fear Splatoon may be somewhat undercooked. Not enough content and maps, poor multiplayer options and configuration. But the foundation looks great.

Not major, but a Nintendo IP that's at least pushed more than Pikmin was or any other new Nintendo IP at launch. I think they are a bit more aggressive with the promotion this time, they are trying to push it but I'm sure they have realistic expectations. When they say they want to make it as huge as Mario Kart, obviously that won't happen from the get-go, but they're at least going into this with the intention of it potentially blowing up.

I could see it pulling off a million units worldwide if it has strong word of mouth, putting it in line with Pikmin 3 and Tropical Freeze. Otherwise... bleh. The lack of voice chat is already turning a lot of people off.
