Digital Foundry: Project CARS Performance Analysis (PS4/XB1)

I still think that DriveClub overall is better then pCars on the consoles. Yes DC is 1080p/30 but it runs amazing and also looks better then pCars.

I hope they release a pCars demo.

DC is closer to to sega rally than proper simulation though.

Still plan on picking it up on X1 through Best Buy and GCU so if I can not deal with the frame rate dips I can always trade it back in towards FARMING SIM YO

But you understand that DriveClub and this game are not even close to the same type of game right? I enjoyed DriveClub as well but not for any sort of sim .. it is a run arcade racer.

Ughh I hate fluctuating framerate.

Give me a 30fps lock option with rainy weather. What a performance disaster.

I was ready to be shocked at those frame rates on a supposedly 60fps racer, but those are under extreme loads. 45 cars on a track, in the rain.

I was very interested in the post processing benchmark, apparently disabling effects on PS4 does give a slight edge regarding frames. I spotted some 5 fps differences.

Yeah DF did go for the worst case scenarios here, but it's something I'd like to see.

@bombshell we should make a list.

Yikes. A tad rougher than I expected, but something had to give I guess.

PS4 has its framerate issues but it has a clear lead over the Xbox Ones framerate which is all over the place add to that the lower resolution its not great for MS.

This is one game that makes me wish I had a better PC
This is the game that made me order a new PC this morning!

Damn, the frame rate is pretty bad for a 60FPS game. I don't like accusing devs, but if this is really the performance of the retail version, it's no better than the copy that DF tested quite a while ago.

That's not actually what was said though was it, they said there was 2xAF on certain parts, 4xAF on others, and 8xAF on others.

What you want. Take a look back at the messages and enjoy your 60 fps/AFx4+AFx8/perfect IQ EQAA with "no visible while playing double image" console game.

At least ps4 players will have more precision because they have double race line arrows. If you know what I mean.

So those red lines, do they really represent tearing? If they do, the X1 version is likely to shred your eyes.

Jesus Christ.

That's not to say the PS4 version is tearing free either...if those red lines do really represent tearing.

Digital Foundry's Forza 5 Analysis said:
By all tests, Forza 5 runs at a flawlessly solid 60fps during 16 player races. It's a respectable feat given the resolution boost and more ambitious geometry of the Prague stage, and one which sets a precedent for future racing sims in the new console generation.

I know that PCars has a higher car count and better effects, but already the "precedent" is broken.

Such horrendous driving in those videos.

Looks good generally, but a framerate skipping up and down by that much might be a frustration. Personally I'm happy with 30fps racers (Driveclub was fine for me), so maybe a patch giving a lock option might be on the cards.

PS4:
+1080P
+More stable frame rate
-less AF
-Ghosting

Xbox One
-900P
-Less stable frame rate (especially when there are lots of alpha effects like in the rain)
+Better AF
+No Ghosting

PS4 better shadows. Ghosting will have toggle option later. Anyway, game will have bunch of patches in near future.

I am sure I'll enjoy playing it.

It is what it is, would I prefer it to be a solid 60fps without ghosting and 8x AF?, of course I would, but it isn't, it is what it is.

Anyone who thinks it will impair their enjoyment has the option of not buying it.

Fallen Xbot (cannot continue gaining levels in this class)
quite disappointing. if its that bad and bothersome though, i suppose i'll be doing a lot of track time alone and keep the weather nice (both of which i'd end up doing once the novelty of career and weather wore off).

Doesn't the PS4 have temporal AA, that's what leads to the ghosting.

This just looks like ps2 style motionblur or a broken Temporal AA. It doesn't look good and doesn't look intentional.
Yep, PS4 has an extra AA pass.

If so, then it is poorly implemented. TAA should not do that. Only in the worst case scenario for certain objects... not the entire screen all the time (unless it is bad, like HRAA).

I'll take it on PC but the PS4 is the clear winner on console, they need to fix the texture filtering problem ASAP though.

...How can reviewers give this a good score on the consoles when it can't maintain anything close to 60fps as a sim racer?
Because they review the game, not one specific metric that most gamers don't even know or care about?

AF and ghosting can be solved easily as they can be bugs which wont affect performance but XB1 issues are not easy to fix.

Still XB1 for me.
Yeah, I decided to go with X1 as well. This doesn't really do anything to make me regret it.

It was always known the PS4 would outperform the X1 for this game, but the combination of friends who only have X1 and my preference of the X1 controller (particularly for driving games) had it win out for me. Also, no digital pre-order on the PS4 (yet) didn't help.

But they are both designed for completely different audiences so what's the point in comparing them? Project Cars is a sim and Driveclub is more arcadey. Unless you just mean in performance/graphics, then never mind!

Performance/graphics. I hope they release a demo because i still have the feeling the game is not finished.

Isn't pCARS advertised as a 60 fps game on consoles? Or do they just say 60fps counting the PC as well?

Seems like a very poor show if they do as it is averaging 40 frames on certain tracks/environments.

SMS devs think it improves PS4 version IQ
It's not a bug. It's a side effect of the way we do AA on PS4, and is arguably a good thing (hear me out!). It's there, and very noticeable from static images of non-direct feed footage especially, but also undeniably in the game itself (mainly when paused). I spotted it and reported it as soon as it got checked in long ago (so we didn't "miss it" as many would have you believe).

However, I also "spotted" that the PS4 version has really lovely image quality, a very smooth and slightly soft (not low res!), "non-gamey" look, which is very natural, and (imo!) rather fantastic, due to this very clever AA approach. It also greatly minimises the distant "shimmer" you often see in console racing games, which is a side effect of low quality AA on thin vertical objects such as fences.

So yes, the ghosting effect is there, if you look hard enough. The advantages far outweigh this small disadvantage however. Notwithstanding that, if customer feedback demands it, we have a plan to add a UI slider in a future update, which will enable you to tune out the ghosting, at the expense of more aliasing and distant shimmer.

From the FAQ

What resolutions and frame-rate will Project CARS run at?
Up to 12K resolution on PC (frame-rate dependent on PC hardware)
1080p, 60 frames per second on PlayStation 4
900p, 60 frames per second on Xbox One

So avoid racing in the rain? lol, then why include rain if you can't fix your shit frame-rate? Says it also dips below 60 here and there with clear skies. And some screen tearing, too! Gross.

Yeah, I'll pass. I will give my $60 to Turn10 for FM6. I'm confident FM6 will hold 60fps just like the other FM games.

Well fuck, looking closer, it's the tearing that's really getting me. Cancelled the XB1 preorder. Does anyone know if my setup on PC would handle frame rate and graphics better than the consoles? I have an i5 3570k and a GTX 670.

In what universe is a stable frame-rate not important? Whether or not gamers know or care about it. They will notice it. Especially in a game designed for enthusiasts like this.

If you are dropping that low there should be an option for a 30 fps lock. Oh well, I'll be on PC anyway if I decide to get it.
