The Witcher 3 | Review Thread

I'm going on a mission to try and break the Aussie street date. I'm sure some stores will have it. Let's hope I can make it happen.

Also, if anyone would like to help me with the OT by making some avatars I'd be much appreciative.

Also, I was thinking of posting the OT on Sunday. What do ppl think? Then or earlier? There are so many threads on the main page already surely it's nearly time to consolidate it all into one place?

I really don't know where to buy this from. Target is giving you the strategy guide for free, best buy is giving you $10 after you preorder and buy it, and PSN unlocks Monday night and is $7 cheaper. I'm leaning to target, but I'm not sure.

Earlier, preferably. It'd be nice to have a single place to go to. Just make sure it's okay to post earlier than Sunday, though. Hate to see it locked and possible bans to be dished out.

I went with PSN for the discount and early unlock, but I've also pretty much committed to digital-only from now on. Guess it depends on how much you want the strategy guide, and whether getting to play a day early is worth $3 (relative to Best Buy)

From Polygon's review:

The Witcher 3's subject matter, its almost defiant doubling down on its treatment of women as titillating props for Geralt and the player, even as it tries to flesh out more female leads, is its most disappointing aspect. This constant presence weighs down what would otherwise be an excellent bit of closure for Geralt's video game saga

Truly shocked...

Edit: ^^^ To laugh at it?

I expected no less from Polygon.

Also, while I did not by any means see every city, burg and outpost in The Witcher 3's world in my 70+ hours spent within it, I don't recall a single non-white humanoid anywhere — not in Skellige, Novograd, Oxenfurt or anywhere else. Once I realized this I couldn't stop looking for any example of a person of color anywhere, and I never found it, unless you count naked monster women sitting at the feet of a boss like a slightly more awkward tribute to a Frank Frazetta painting. But maybe they're in there, somewhere.

Fucking polygon always reaching

Not sure if this is an accurate statement but remember when making a love interest with someone in Witcher 3 will be more meaningful or w/e, what does it mean?

The review I'm sure lots of people were waiting for:

Polygon - 8.0

Seems he docked points in The Witcher 3 for the same reason he docked points for Bayonetta 2.

Something, something objectification of woman, something, something.

Yes, I agree objectifying woman is a bad thing. However I would hope a PROFESSIONAL opinion would be objective enough to not clash with ones personal moral crusade.

Edit: Hey 8 out of 10 is a good score, I'm not denying that, but I feel every time Arthur Gies scores a game slightly lower than every other major publication and one of the notable points of complaints is because of how woman are portrayed in the game, it starts to sound like a he's letting his own personal conflict against woman being shown as a sex symbol, rather then the professionalist mindset to be expect of someone reviewing a game for actual game itself.

I can order it with a VPN, but would I need to play it with a VPN? (its GOG...)

A friend of mine just got his key from Nuuvem that he purchased through a vpn. He was able to activate it on Gog with no issues from The US using no vpn. Does not appear the key is region locked.

I wonder if Gies ever went to Poland and would write a travel report he would complain about the lack of coloured people

"I havent been to every miasto or wies, but I havent seen any coloured people"

Poland 8.0

There are no such things as objective reviews.

If the portrayal of women negatively affected someone's experience then they absolutely should drop the score. The score is only a representation of how their experience playing the game was.

I fully expect that the game will be pretty terrible when it comes to women's roles ,but ,at the same time,I don't care.

I don't really expect The Witcher 3 to shed some sort of guiding light on women's issues and no one should.

It should be pretty established by now that the series as awful at objectifying women....The only expection is like..Philippa Eilhart in TW2.

I enjoy the games for other things they do well, though.

It is the Dark Ages. Treatment of humanity in general was pretty shitty. Yes its a fantasy version of Europe basically but that doesn't change much in the fantasy version the Dark Ages are just as bad

He found that disappointing, he did not like it, and articulated his thoughts very well in the review. Still got an 8 (like the Destructoid's one nobody is criticizing). I would say the reviewer has been pretty fair.

So basically they are saying no sex and everything is good. The fact you can mercilessly chop off dudes heads isn't a big deal, but if you see a titty or have sex = objectification.

I like Gies alot of the time, but his harping on every single issue to do with women and minorities is starting to get to me. Starting to feel like the boy who cried wolf.

Certainly the score is fair. Plenty of people are generally bored with his stances. Kotaku brought up the same issues, but I guess people feel that they're more even keeled. Arthur Gies at this point is Typecast and there is a certain expectation of his stance.

There's a difference between making every girl become a weak damsel, waiting for a man to save and then sex her right after, and prostitution and debauchery that fits the world of the game.

So long as it's the latter and not the former, we are good to go.

Also, I hated using potions. I hope traps are still awesome.

The former sells though. A lot.
