NPD Sales Results for April 2015 [Up1: Xbox One #1]

SO far the prevailing thoughts are that it was a combination of a weekly GameStop promotion offering $125 off an XB1 with trade in of a PS3 or 360 along with the initial sales boost that accompanied the MCC bundle's release. Those are really the only two sales drivers that occurred for XB1 in April outside of some retailer specific ACU bundles as far as anyone seems to know. Please do correct me if I am mistaken though.

Edit: Apparently there was also a BestBuy trade in discount
Not bad. Those are some pretty decent deals.

How much is it down YoY on the month? I doubt its more than anything outside of statistical noise unless it did really well (for WiiU) last year. That said, the system is in a weird place now despite its stronger library, so it slowly slipping isn't surprising and when the MK8 month rolls around, it will really plummet.

The 3DS is more interesting to track right now because its interesting to see how well or not the N3DS will keep the baseline up, and as of so far its seemingly do its job as intended.

3DS is at ~115k vs last year's 106k, it totally did not do its job (and unlike Japan, the original baseline isn't even decent)

I'm a Sony fan with no intent right now to purchase and XBOX 1 but even I can see the tide in the USA slowing turning. I mean news of no no big releases until next year with another horrible fall lineup can't be helping Sony PR in the USA. Sony is going to need a price cut to even compete with XBOX 1 this fall in the states. They might be forced to cut it by a temporary $100 at least during BF with a $50 permanent price decrease after or just before that.

Is rooting for a console/company really that different from rooting for a sports team in the grand scheme of things though? I never understood either but I can't really see much difference between the two. Its not like you get anything in return for rooting for a team/company in either case.

I suppose rooting for a console is a bit better, because a console's success does impact the support it gets, which impacts anyone who owns the console. Whereas although I follow some sports teams, the result of the game has no actual impact on me.

Except for Persona 5, Godzilla, Dragon Quest Heroes, NMS, Grim Fandango, Hotline Miami 2, and almost all JRPGs being brought to the states, yeah, you're right.
I'd expect more people to know what Halo, Tomb Raider, Forza, and Gears are than would know any of those titles, except maybe Godzilla because it had a movie last year. At least stateside, XB1's announced fall lineup has much broader appeal than PS4's does currently, barring any E3 megatons.

Apparently brand loyalty is more akin to religion than rooting for a sports team. I read an article once about how people's brains respond similarly to favorite company logos as to religious icons

Pretty boring month.

Congrats to MS.

Funny people still talk up "holiday exclusives in NPD threads."

Exclusive do not matter in holiday months. What matter in holiday months is BF DEALS!

Who cares about Raibow Six when Halo 5, Black Ops 3 and Battlefront will be available?
and who cares about those game when Just cause 3 coming out!? ;)

So it's the 3DS holding Nintendo back.

The whole time

Xbox 360 sold way more than PS3 in US, so I assume a good amount of people see Xbox One as a natural choice.

Yes, indeed. I wonder how and if this ''natural choice'' will endure later in the generation; if later buyers are less prone to this the US should supersede the rest of the world.

There isn't much XB1 footage out there, as opposed to the PS4.

Even all the reviews were of the PS4 version.

I wouldn't be surprised if TW3 sold more on the PS4.

What are you talking about 40 minutes was put up today on youtube?

And it was being streamed on twitch for xbox one?

Things like this just make me sad, I don't play my WiiU much, but it's a nice complimentary system, the exclusives kick ass.

Brand power wise I agree!

But mad max will be a surprise hit like sleeping dogs, only I think because of how well the movie is being received, it will get a huge boost.
Yeah, they were smart to hold off until after the movie released. It's going to thrust Mad Max back into the public consciousness at just the right time. Hopefully the game is as good as the movie.

Well PS4 is definitely starting to slow down and wonder if people are realizing there really aren't any great exclusive games to get for it and the XBOX having better deals. May probably will be XB1 followed by PS4 handily winning June. July through Sept. will be the interesting months but lack of big exclusive games or the ones we were hoping to come out UC4 and R&C aren't helping the PS4. At least WW they still have the momentum.

The king... has returned. In this game of thrones, where there can be only one market leader, the market... has spoken. A few years into last generation, the 360 unexpectedly got a boost from a hardware revision, kinect, and a price cut and never looked back, dominating the remainder of the generation. Now, history has repeated itself, but much sooner than anyone could have guessed.

Microsoft didn't need a price cut and they told Sony "you could have those measly third party marketing deals". They said we're gonna win this on the power of our brand alone. Sony underestimated how long it takes to make next-generation games and is left without anything significant to show for this critical holiday season. So they're throwing around what little money they have left in their chauffeurs hoping something sticks.

Now that the DRM fiasco is forgotten and the kinect has become optional, the value proposition has been turned on its head. The masses are flocking back to the Xbox brand in record numbers. Microsoft is one-upping, so to speak, Sony at every turn. You got Plus? We got Gold. You got Bloodborne, yeah we got Scalebound. You got The Order, have some Gears Remastered, what you wish The Order was. They told fans to find the truth, and boy did the fans ever find it. Be prepared... Halo... is... coming.

Sony could spend their efforts trying to win the rest of the world, but Microsoft is perfectly content with dominating the good ole US of A. Win april, check. Win May, no problem. Dominate E3... done and done. Momentum is a funny thing... once it gets going, good luck trying to stop it. I don't envy Sony's position one bit. To build a lead only to see that lead whittled away until it's eventually overtaken. That one poster above may be physically rattled by this news, but the bigger story is how these NPD results have forever, and irreversibly, left Sony, and it's fans, straight shook.

As a PS4 owner im really happy this happened. I want both Consoles in the race. Not just Sony leading. I can see MS always trying to improve their console every month while Sony is doing kinda nothing. Good Job Microsoft & Phil . you guys really did turn this around.

you don't know that, it could easily dip even more

regardless, Splatoon predictions? ;)

Obviously I don't know the future, I am speaking of its current doings, lol. It had a favorable launch (well above some expectations) and subsequent month.

As for Splatoon? Honestly, I don't know and for once can't do my usual "billions" malarkey. If some of our predictions for the strong pick up (relatively speaking) in Japan could be considered reasonable, then I'd also wager to guess that it will actually do well in the States as well. Obviously not well enough to push the WiiU back up to where MK8 is going to soon push the bar, but it should give it a solid bump the world over for the month.

There's a good buzz on the game that isn't "the GAF bubble" and Nintendo is marketing it hard. What's more interesting to me from all of this is Xeno3D's performance, which honestly is surprising (though it could be entirely misleading). Makes me interested if, in fact, the release of XenoX isn't being deliberately held for a more 'favorable' time that may help see the title do very well for a WiiU piece of software.
