This thread is for stupid GAMING questions that don't deserve their own thread

I'm confused about the Shin Megami Tensei series.

There are games with that name, but Persona games are called Shin Megami Tensei: Persona.

So, how does this work? Are the Persona games spin-offs? Do they share exactly the same universe?

SMT Main: Apocalypse

Persona: Anime High School shenanigans.

Both have demons as a key component, but in Persona they're little more than window dressing.

A company being excited for their new game is a huge slap in the face to all the fans that liked their old games.
Why don't devs unlock all localizations on the games instead of forcing me to change the system language on my console to force the game to change?

Would be nice if they just let me have Japanese audio with English sub's.

would playing gamecube games on the wii w/ a component cable look similar/the same as playing them on a gamecube with a component cable? i know the gamecube cable is super expensive, so i'm trying to see if this would be a good alternative >_>

It's an alternative. The video output of the Gamecube is quite a bit better than the Wii's, though.

When using streaming, like steam in house streaming or the Nvidia one, is hardware encoding/decoding always/usually better than software?

Or does it greatly vary on the setup?

Is persona 3 fes supposed to be this grinding-heavy or am I doing something wrong? Major spoiler:
just got aigis to the party
and I'm lvl 29, already got to the floor where the lvl 34 boss awaits me and 13 days till next full moon. I feel I could take the boss right now but it would be a bit hard. I'm feeling underlvld even though I took the entire path to the boss 3 times killing almost every shadow in the way. I find it a bit harsh to need more than 3k XP to lvl up whereas each shadow I defeat give me 77-113 XP (sometimes I find a red one that gives about 300 XP, but that's relatively rare). I'm enjoying the game so far but these grinding parts are a bit of a drag.

If you have the hardware, it is better than software.

Hardware encoding is usually worse quality, but much faster than software encodes. If you are compressing a movie for archival, software solutions can give you better quality and compression, but they can't do this in real time usually.

My cousin lives in a country where buying games legitimately is too expensive for the average person. He owns an Xbox 360 but has expressed a lot of interest in the PS3. I was thinking of buying a used 12 gig super slim plus a selection of PS3 exclusive titles and sending them over. I will cover duties if possible and go with something like FedEx to try and reduce the chance of theft, from what I hear the local postal system isn't great for more valuable items. Anyways, my questions/concerns:

1. He does not have a very strong internet connection, will he be able to play games by skipping prompts that ask for firmware updates?

2. Is 12 gig enough if he will be running games purely off of disc? I think I have about 10 games in mind that I would send along with the console.

3. There is a voltage difference between my region and his region. I'm really not sure how I can get around this problem other than asking him to use some kind of voltage adapter for the PS3 but perhaps someone has a better solution? I could just transfer him some money and tell him to get everything locally but the local prices were substantially higher than what I would pay in North America.

I'm sure this will work, buuuut, does the PS2/PS3 HD composite cable work with the PS4? Only asking because I am searching Ebay for one and most say PS2/PS3 compatible but don't mention PS4.

The only Video output on the PS4 is a HDMI port

Thus I'm almost positive it will not be compatible with that cable

You're right, I had forgotten it's only HDMI out on the PS4. Curses. Just moved house and scored a 63" Sony but it only has composite in. I'll have a look at some electrical shops, see if they have HDMI to AV boxes. Cheers.

Another question, if I already have PS+ and I get a code for another month or so, can I redeem it or do I have to wait until it expires first?

No, we haven't gotten any repeats so far. I did notice that many of the previous freebies are frequently on sale.

Aww :(
That's fine then I guess. Thanks for the info though :D

Not sure, but I don't think it's a problem. You can also update the system via USB if that helps. Game updates can be skipped, but of course you can't play online if you do.

Depends on the games, most likely not. Many games have mandatory installs that are usually around 4GB. But I'm sure there's someplace you can look that up for those 10 games.

It should work with just plugging in a normal cable since the PS3 does the voltage transformation internally. At least I can use my Japanese PS3 that way in Europe. But since this has the potential to wreck your console if I'm wrong, make sure to double check this for that specific model, it could have changed in some newer revision.

Best couch co-op games for 2-4 people? XB1/PS4. I assume there's lots of good indies, but I don't really keep myself up to date with them.

Do you mean couch co-op as in actual co-operative play, or as some people refer to just local multiplayer?

Any recommended mods for the first Bioshock?

Was going to replay it on PS3, then I realized I got it on Steam at some point, anything that enhances the experience, not necessarily graphical mods, either.

What's the current wisdom on charging the Wii U gamepad? I've got the little dock set up, so I could easily have the thing on charge any time I'm not using it. Is that good for the battery, or should I only charge it when it's starting to go flat?

Shin Megami Tensei refers mostly to the combat. The combat is virtually identical. You get daemons, fuse daemons, and level daemons in combat. Even the spell names are the same from game to game.

Inb4, yeah, there are small changes from game to game, but it's basically the same thing.

Is there a good way to get KOTOR to run on a modern gaming PC? I have an OC 2500K paired with a 290X I bought the Star Wars Bundle on Steam. It seems like no matter what I try KOTOR crashes as soon as I finish character creation.

Are there any video games that are compilations of various designers working separately under the same IP or theme? The equivalent that jumps to mind is the Animatrix, in that it should be more substantial than a minigame collection. I'm thinking sorta like how the Serious Sam developers lent out their IP to smaller devs to make their own games like Serious Sam Double D and The Random Encounter but instead I'm looking for it to be combined into a single package that ties it all together.

I tried thinking really hard but the nearest I can come up with is The God of War Saga. 5 games by 2 different studios, each with a different game director.

Serious Sam did have a collection on Xbox 360 though its a compilation rather than a purposely made collection like the Animatrix.

Even in the movie business I think the Animatrix is more a less one of a kind, though my knowledge of the movie world isn't that good.

If it can be digital then Humble Bundles and Steam Collections might work, some humble bundles have a theme tying games together and Steam has things like The Serious Sam Complete Pack.

I've only played through MGS1. Will I understand Ground Zeroes and will it spoil important plot points from the previous games?

So I just picked up the ME Trilogy for PS3 during the digital sale and I have to ask:

Has anyone had as many performance/game issues as I have?

The game stutters all over the place.
A lot of times I get a squad mate glued to my ass during a mission. To the point where I actually end up selecting them instead of the door controls a lot of the time.
My squad mates just stand there and don't shoot... or shoot randomly at nothing.
The saving times are abysmal. Like 30 seconds long. Kills any momentum in the game.

I didn't have the second or third problem on PC, so I'm wondering if this is a PS3 thing.

The thing I remember most about playing ME2 on PS3 was being able to make a sandwich during the load screen going from one deck to another on the Normandy.

You can have played them all and you won't understand what's going on. Not really, anyway.

You can play GZ without spoiling previous titles you might want to revisit at a later date, though.

Yes, it will spoil the series. Metal Gear is definitely a series you want to play in the order of release. The important games for the overall plot are 1, 2, 3, Portable Ops, 4, Peace Walker. The Acid games are good too, but not as important for the story.

I'm sorry, I hate to bring this up, and I doubly apologize if English isn't your first language, but you understand that it is "more *or* less , not more *a* less , right?

English is my first language, I understand that is the correct way to type it. I just typed it as I would casually say it in my accent. My apologies.

I haven't played them on the PS3, but I've talked about the series enough to pick up that the performance of the later games gets better on the PS3.

ME1 in general isn't a spectacularly well-performing game in the first place and was designed to be a 360 exclusive. Add in the port issues, and well...

At least there aren't a ton of loading screens in ME1 unless you do a lot of fast traveling.

A lot of that is just the classic situation of the PS3 not liking the Unreal engine.

In general, though, for the ME series and performance it goes PC > 360 > PS3.

Please can someone share some toughts about the port of Sleeping Dogs on PS4?

Is it playable and at least better than TW3 on the performance aspect?

Thanks

Why don't I see an image on the gamma/brightness calibration screen on certain XB1 games on my plasma TV?
It will say to move the slider until the image is barely visible, but even on max I don't see anything. This has happened on a few titles now, the most recent being The Witcher 3.
I've played with a few display settings on the Xbox and calibrated my screen to no avail.
I should note that I can see each distinct box on the shades of gray scale below the "image" and I can see it when I switch to THX mode

I know next to nothing about this, but recently was able to listen in on a discussion between people much more knowledgable than I about the difficulties of maintaining very high framerates for VR. For the purpose of this question, let's say we're rendering at a resolution of 1080p per eye, and we want a frame rate that averages somewhere between 90 and 120 fps, ideally with a minimum frame rate of 90 fps.

Obviously tradeoffs are necessary in terms of geometrical complexity, lighting, shading etc, but sometimes I get the feeling that part of the difficulty for VR maybe stems from developers and consumers trying to set the graphical bar a bit too high. This is where I'd appreciate it if GAF could help educate me on the matter.

What's bothering me is I seem to remember computers from well over a decade ago being able to achieve ridiculous framerates (300+ fps when uncapped) running Quake 3 or similar titles. Yes, the resolutions were no more than 1K whereas 1080p per eye is 4K. Yes, Quake 3 level graphical complexity is totally unacceptable even for a mobile game today. But if I tried to extrapolate that linearly to account for the drastic improvements in performance since then, I could come to the conclusion that a machine today would be able to run a version of Quake 3 that was properly optimized for today's hardware at 4K at an insane speed, somewhere between 500 and 1000 fps, or 1-2 milliseconds per frame.

I remember a talk by John Carmack a while ago (before he joined Oculus) where he talked about how even Doom 3 felt amazing in VR, and that it wasn't necessary to have the most complex graphics in order to feel immersion and presence. And with VR adaptors coming to smartphones it would appear others in the industry agree.

So basically my question is this: Has there been some fundamental change in rendering pipelines over the last 5-10 years that has made it that much more difficult to achieve such high framerates without significantly cutting back on important graphical features? As in, maybe many popular graphical features today are much more expensive than popular graphical features were a decade ago?
Or perhaps the bottleneck isn't in the graphics department but in other areas such as game logic, AI, I/O, etc? Because I've never heard of a pc running Crysis at anywhere near the same speeds that people were running Quake 3 a mere 3-4 years after it released, and that game was 8 years ago.

Please help me understand GAF, your assistance is appreciated!
