It's a very dangerous precedent to set...

...but Shenmue 3...
Which is exactly why it cannot be compared to something like Metroid Prime.
Shenmue was more like a fan favourite that didn't even do that well back on the Dreamcast despite being extremely expensive. So naturally no one wanted to fund a sequel. Guess their really are doing the Kiickstarter only to see how many people really still care about that game. I doubt that whatever comes out of the Kickstarter won't be enough to fund the development and Sony or Sega will have to add some.

Pretty cool indeed... but without an remaster or a HD re-release of Shenmue 1 and 2, I can't even bother. =/
I never played the series before!

I don't get it. 2 million is all they needed? That's chump change in the grand scheme of the things. Something doesn't feel right about this.

Im also concerned with the precedent this sets. Will it lead to more on stage pan handling? Whats next will Nintendo get on stage and be like "Metroid Prime 4 can be yours....if the fans cough up $20 million dollars to help us ease development costs!" Its an annoying proposition. Either announce the damn game or don't announce it.
I had the exact same pause as well.

Shenmue is an exception but it is kinda..worrying? on a larger scale.

but for now: S3!!!

Ive pledged: $160.00.

Come on people! We can do it!

Im hoping Sony has some deal with Yu ie we will match whatever you raise.

I don't want my previous comments to be misconstrued. My issue was that Sony made it seem like it was their idea, when it wasn't. The Shenmue team just used their conference as a platform to announce their Kickstarter. It'd have existed with or without Sony.

I'm very happy that fans of this series may get the chance to play the game again. If I had a connection to this game, I'd be just as ecstatic as some of you are, but unfortunately, I don't. I'm definitely back it, because I think Suzuki is has been very genuine and I want him to make the game he wants, for his fans. Kickstarter is a blessing for a lot of developers out there.

Pretty sure Sony is bankrolling some of this but I put $100 in because this is what I've been hoping for the past...too man...years.

They won't be. The only thing the would have paid for is exclusivity to PS4 - or rather preventing it from coming to Xbox One.

Achieving the goal will be proof of viability and help secure investment they likely already have set out.

This is going to reach 2 million by tomorrow morning, and then some most likely...

Incredible

It will most likely reach it overnight in the US. It's hitting primetime in the West Coast and the EU will be waking up soon. I have no idea how Japan would take to a kickstarter honestly.

It's really not that bad.

Here's a risky project. It's hard to gauge whether there are enough fans who give a shit about said game. Either a.) it dies and is never made because costs are too big, or b.) kickstartered for a very small portion (with those people getting the games anyway) while someone else funds the rest.

I highly doubt Sony would have done this shit unless they got exclusivity console wise AND the game was slated to sell at a decent amount. You can't just make games for the sake of it. It's a business.

Imagine Onimusha or Dino Crisis getting some backing with this. I'm all for it.

I'm sure some developers might take advantage of this and try to get us to fund a game, but if we play it smart and help out projects we want, I don't see the issue.

KS, like Early Access, is a tool. It is neither good, nor bad.

That doesn't seem likely, given that it's only 2 million that they are asking for, and Yu definitely doesn't have the money to back the rest of the game up.

And backed at $29. If a physical PS4 version is announced, I'll upgrade to $60. Hell, I might even go to $300 by the time this is over. We'll see.

I think I'll probably chip in $29 later.

I know it will have cinema shorts for Shenmue 1 and 2 if it hits $2.5 million, which it pretty much definitely will, but I'm a bit tempted to borrow the Dreamcast I gave my brother and buy the first game for $30 on Amazon, then I can spend about $15 on a copy of Shenmue 2 on Xbox.

I'm only disappointed that I probably won't have an amazing experience with Shenmue 3 because I never played the first 2. But awesome that it's happening.

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?
Are there limits to the Art Book and whatnot? I don't see a maximum backer number.
