Where is it stated that they have more funding waiting exactly?

There's no mention of this in the kickstarter video atleast.

How much did SHENMUE cost to make?
You really think 2Mill is funding the whole game lol.

It's going to be apples-oranges trying to compare the costs on the first games to III. The development time went back all the way to the Saturn, and a lot of the technology to create the world hadn't even been invented. What was ambitious and revolutionary technology in the late 90's is relatively mundane today.

This game probably actually costs between $30 and $50 million. This Kickstarter is just for fleecing fans.

If this ends up costing more than $20 million I'll be absolutely shocked. I'm expecting like $10 million, 15 tops.

none of the kickstarter info lets me know if I'll still be able to go into shops, pick up every item and slowly turn them around in my hand or not

Holy shit, can the OP be updated as to why this kickstarter exists, Sony's involvement and why it's only $2 mil?! People keep asking the same shit in every single page.

I agree. Use your heads people! There is a pic from a Tweet that Dylan Jobe posted explaining how the kickstarter works.

If your definition of "fleecing fans" is giving them the game they've dreamed of for a decade for 30 bucks... then you need a new definition.

Haven't we been through enough of these Kickstarters now that we can just skip posts like this altogether?

I've paid $29 for a copy of Shenmue 3. How am I being fleeced exactly?

Some people have issues with kickstarters for games that still get additional funding from a publisher. 2 million probably wont scratch the budget, but shows there's demand for it. That's the value of crowdsourcing for things like this.

Look at the post history. It's not even worth trying with this one.

Well I backed the $29 option for PS4 which is ridiculously cheap. £20 pretty much. I would have done a higher tier for a physical PS4 edition, but no go there unfortunately. So excited.

Need a HD Remaster now!

Haha, wake up this morning--half a day later--and it hits its initial funding goal already. Good stuff. Kickstarter and the like are showing publishers day in and day out how wrong their assumptions are about what gamers want.

For now, I stay with my 5$ pledge. I want to have more info, luckily they'll come during this 30 days period. Dunno, I don't want to risk on having something on my hands that has nothing from original Shenmue games. For now there are three screenshots, none of them is really good (I know, I know, they are here just to show something), info about the game itself lack. I mean, what if the stretch for additional villages won't be reached?
What we'll get?

Too many unknows here. I know I can't have a detailed plan on a non-existing game, but more infos woulf be appreciated.

they're bringing the old team back according to the KS

I've never even played Shenmue and I donated $5 to the Kickstarter. That's how hyped I am for games right now lol

Why is it so hard for people to understand that this Kickstarter isn't the total required cost to create the entire game? It's only a booster.

How many more "lol 2m can't make this game" comments are we going to get?

Part of me doesn't want to pledge because I feel like they'll insert a physical PS4 option somewhere along the line. I still don't get why that hasn't been included.

I mean, I'll happily hand out $300, just let me have a physical copy.

I know Suzuki explained this once but seeing everything it took to bring Shenmue back from the grave, I don't think this holds up anymore. I'm pretty sure he'll try to wrap up the story in one final game.

One would hope. Let's not press our luck here, Yu.

Just googled it and yeah I actually went myself about 8 years ago, I liked it, quite serene.

Dat Lan Tau island tho.

I might have been in the temple on a bad day. I go back to China and Hong Kong from time to time, maybe I could visit again sometime. (Not Lan Tau though.) I'd prefer to see Guilin/Yangshou again though.

Doesn't look like it'll conclude the story looking at the characters to be in this game going by the kickstarter pages. But you never know really.

Yeah, scope, funding and development effort are valid concerns particularly since expectations are high and detail is low(ish). To reduce risk I'd keep all of those to a minimum.

Plus, there could be Shenmue 4. Minus, story resolution in another decade or so (lol).

I have absolutely ZERO problem with people spending their money how they like. I blow that much on good food and wine for a special occasion.

But I don't understand what people get from putting big sums into a game like this - what made you pick that much? (edit: just to be clear - not criticising at all, I am just interested to understand others' views on this stuff.)

Mainly because I love the series and wanted to be a part of it being made a reality. I backed also to make sure it reaches the highest possible amount and becomes the best it can be.

Though I really wish there were more in game rewards though, like be an NPC for $1000 or something

Another 30+ pages if we don't get info into the OP.

not like the people complaining will read the OP

This is probably the best gaming news i've heard since i was born lol I'm a Dreamcast boy and Shenmue 1-2 was , by far , the greatest gaming experience in my adolescence.

Me and 2 other friends actually played the game simultaneously. I was the only one with the console , but they all wanted to play so we decided to play it together. Sounds strange (it sounded to me too at that time) but it was awesome. We took turns , played , watched other play , it was actually pretty cool for routine tasks , we wandered , wandered and wandered. We spent so many hours just doing random stuff , talking with most characters (and with each other). The whole experience was extremely immersive , and incomparable with any other. I know i won't able to replicate or emulate those times ,but it surely will make me remember them.

I dont even have a new gen console. The compatibility with 360 is a big news , but its more of a space-issue in my bedroom and really not what will make me change from a Microsoft console to a Sony Console. Which Shenmue 3 will make me do. Buy a ps4.

Same. I've already pledged the $29 for the digital version. But I'd be willing to pay a lot more for a physical copy. Heck if there is a physical copy later, I'd have no qualms with buying the game twice.

I can still barely believe this is true. Staying up till 6AM in the UK was worth it!

I feel the same way. I'm really bummed we don't have a physical PS4 tier. I back it anyway at the 300$ level anyway because I want the project to happen with as many stretch goals as possible and I also felt that everything included in that tier was still good value.

But yeah, I'm praying they'll add a physical PS4 tier at some point so I can change my pledge to that.

Info from Kickstarter comments

"Please add a strech goal for a PS4 physical copy"
Independant studio means digital version. Unless a contract is signed with the console constructor. And you can't promise a physical version in a KS camapaign unless such a contract grants it.

Don't get me wrong, I am happy for you all this is actually happening, but this and the Bloodstain games are a long ass time from being finished. I can't think of a single game I would drop money on that far out

Anyway I would like to have some clarifications.
Like, is this the conclusive chapter of the series? Because Suzuki told he would need at least two games, if not three, to complete the story. So having Shenmue 3 with the possibility the story wouldn't close is still a possibility, so if they at least manage to answer this, it would be nice.

Do take some time to read this. Suzuki-san has once said in a Sept 2014 interview that in order to complete the entire series of 16 chapters (of which Shenmue 1 is Chapter 1 and Shenmue 2 is Chapters 2-6) he may need 3 more games (up to Shenmue 5). But Suzuki-san hopes to finish the series in a 4th game. However, do take note that now there are higher storage capacity media available (Blu-ray and PC HDD) so more of the story can be included. Now that Niao Sun is going to make her first appearance in the upcoming 3rd game along with Lan Di, I can't wait for the rest of the Heavenly Kings to show up!

For $1000 I can be your NPC for a day.

Because they didn't simply state that on the Kickstarter page. I backed this at the $500 tier and would have regardless as this is one of my favorite series, but until they explicitly state they have additional funding it is a valid question.

You need to compare it to other high earning kickstarter campaigns.
I do expect it to do better than Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, Torment or Pillars of Eternity, so more than 6 million should be doable.
How much more will be much up to how the campaign is run.
Yeah. What I hope gets added is a production book actually or a making of documentary. Would be awesome finding out how much this cost.

The point of Kickstarter is that it really doesn't matter what happens on the open marketplace. Producers got paid Consumers get their product. Everyone's happy Could all involved of worked on something safer? Yeah probably, but they knew the risks when they went into it.
Well with these publisher funded KSs there is a real question regarding budgets and how much a publisher gets since they make the money from actual sales not KS. It is something to consider.

Oh man imagine if Yu runs with the money.
I wouldn't mind.

Sooooo...dreams do come true?
If you believe.

I've never played the shenmue games before, is getting a dreamcast for 1 and 2 the best way?

For the full experience, I'd say yes.
Shenmue 1 in its playable form is only available on Dreamcast.
The other form it's available in is a digest movie that comes with Shenmue 2 on XBOX (the original XBOX).

Shenmue 1 is vastly different from Shenmue 2. While the 2nd game has more stuff happening in it, the first game is a lot more slow paced but the sheer amount of details and things you can do in it makes it a bit more endearing... a bit like Megaman Legends 1 vs Megaman Legends 2.
It's slower, but you get attached to the place you're stuck at. :)
When you watch the digest movie, you don't get to experience all of that, so it's up to you.

Playing the two games on Dreamcast can be a bit of a hassle though, since the US only got the first game. You'd have to play either the EU version or the JP version of the 2nd game.

To sum it up:

Dreamcast:
-Shenmue NTSC US (English voices and English texts) and then Shenmue 2 PAL (Japanese voices and English texts)
-or just Shenmue 1 and 2 NTSC JP (my choice)

XBOX:
-Shenmue 1 as a digest movie and then Shenmue 2 NTSC US (English voices and English texts)

I have to wonder if Sega will release a Shenmue 1 & 2 hd remaster now, or even just the games as they are ported to PS4/PC.

Will there be an Xbox/Wii U/Linux/Mac version for Shenmue 3?

Currently we are planning development only for PC (Windows) and PS4. Other platforms have not been decided yet.

In case anybody missed it, they added a FAQ to the bottom of the Kickstarter page this morning. This does not appear to me to be absolutely exclusive.

I am so happy about this. I have been in shock today, feeling a bit dizzy at work. After all these years, all the let downs, I honestly had given up hope for a real sequel.

Shenmue has a special meaning to all its fans, I'm sure. It certainly does for me. It was Shenmue II that was the first step for me to fall in love with China. The beautiful scenery from Guilin made me interested in that big country. That's how I decided to visit China, why I started to learn the language and eventually how I met my wife. So without Shenmue I don't think we would ever have met.

Shenmue has had a real impact in my life. I can't wait to finish the story.

What a nice story. I wish I had this kind of ambition and curiosity about the world.
