Sony and PlayStation is definitely a partner in this game, said Corsi, and its going to be run through third-party production. Were going to help Ys Net get the game done, were going to be partners on it the whole way, and really excited to see this thing come out in a couple of years.
sony very clearly wasn't going to fund whatever part of this they're in for without this show of interest, so i'd say no
according to the creator, it was far far less (do you have a citation on the sega claim?). and it actually is, when shenmue's being wrongly pointed at as being, at best, somehow the Ishtar of gaming and at worst, the fall of the dreamcast (i love that one).
also relevant when discussing how much this might cost beyond KS figures, even though there's a lotta relevant factors here (UE4 vs their own engine work is huge, for one)
Still, the idea that Yu Suzuki could develop and release Shenmue 3 on a $2M budget doesnt add up. What everyone seems to be forgetting is that the original Shenmue released in 1999 for Dreamcast literally held the Guinness World Record for the most expensive game of all time (at the time) with a production budget of $70M ($99M, if you adjust for inflation. Though Suzuki disputes SEGAs stated budget and says the game only cost $47M).
But again, I want to point out that the exact figure is not relevant to my conversation so there is no need to argue over which is the accurate figure. However, it does seem odd that 15 years after the fact he is now making claims that the game actually cost 23mil less. And it isn't like he lacks motive to now downplay the cost of the game.
Which is surprising, considering that if MS had so much more money than Sony, they would have had something more to show at E3. Yet they were completely overshadowed.

They were? Seemed pretty even to me with MS having that big backwards compat. announcement. Then again I don't care about either platform beyond cursory interest.
Really strange way of getting the game done. Sony doesn't want to fully commit it seems but used it's stage to get the word out. I don't blame them seeing as how much it sunk Sega financially.

Should just put this in every Shenmue OP going forward. People seem to gloss over the fact that there is a bunch of paperwork behind the scenes for big budget projects and their desire here was more along the lines of 'how about we do this now instead of 2 years from now?'
It is absolutely amazing to me that people are clinging to this "show of interest" thing as though one of the largest tech companies in the world begging for 2 million dollars is an acceptable way to do market research.
Exactly my point. It may seem like hindsight but Sony putting Shenmue 3 in the middle of their E3 presentation shows they knew exactly the impact it was going to have. I think the market research was pretty much done already and kickstarter gives the fans the illusion they are helping to make it happen. I know that's an unpopular opinion but 2 million could never fund a modern Shenmue game. The cold reality of this is that Shenmue 3 was a done deal for Sony before they even came out onstage.
Well that remains up to YSnet, since they are the ones developing it - not Sony, who are partial funding and helping with marketing. I suspect they are not giving a physical PS4 version to prevent second hand sales. PC retail would still function to enable a digital product likely through Steam, so won't be able to be sold second hand either. Basically all so they can maximise revenue and not lose money since second hand sales wouldn't give them anything in return
Im sorry but i think Backwards Compatibility is just an overrated feature, I have a launch day PS3 and i can count the times i played PS2 games on 1 hand and that was full compatibility outside like a few titles. Microsoft is launching with a very small list and the promise to bring more in the future. Then they showed a CG trailer for a new IP and that game is supposed to launch in spring of next year.
What? Nintendo and MS have much larger warchests than Sony does. Is that really a controversial statement? They are starting to turn things around, but they're not exactly swimming in liquids assets here.

I wasn't even aware it was only a small list. I thought both studios had pretty good announcements and reveals so I thought they did about even, but like I said I didn't really pay that close attention. I'm too busy paying attention to PC
edit:
Also, I really like playing old games on PC, so I guess people will value backwards compat differently. I love that I can play an old game like fallout 1 + 2 + BOS without issue. So I guess I just value that more.

Here is the truth, Sony just dropped 3 projects onto its stage that were thought to be dead/not coming/vapor ware by everyone.
If you said Sony would have TLG+FFVII remake+Shenmue 3 on E3 2015, you would be seen as a joke.
They delivered on ALL THREE projects.
BC is great for Xbone fans. I think Sony should do it, I'd welcome it but Ill take all those 3 games instead. I mean one of them has been MIA for 14 years. The others were getting there too. You tell me with a straight face MS matched hyped levels with Sony now. I think the industry as a whole just got stream rolled by Sony. No bias just facts.
Yeah, it feels like this is being glossed over by people, the Kickstarter money is Y Net's, reaching the goal meant they secured additional funding from Sony and another third party. Sony is helping fund the PS4 version and the other party is helping fund the PC version.

Yeah, I guess TLG is a bigger deal than I thought. I mean, personally I think the game has to actually prove itself yet. I never thought much of it before and my opinion hasn't changed on that front. But other people love that game, I just can't see why myself.
FF7 is ballsy good. I guess I just didn't look at it as a sony product since it is coming to PC as well.
I have mixed feelings about shenmue. I certainly really recall enjoying shenmue 2 and I never played the original. I just don't know whether it'll be good or not because of the time gap and changing trends in gaming.
You're right in pointing out that these are 3 pretty big selling points for sony having a good show.

Did you miss the gameplay for Forza 6 coming this year? How about Halo 5 coming this year? They also showed gameplay for Gears 4. How about the Minecraft demo for HoloLens? What about Rare's new Pirate game called Sea of Thieves plus the 30 for 30 package of old Rare games. How about the new Pro controller and Mod support for Fallout 4? EA Access keeps expanding too with Titanfall added to the list as well. Then you had Indie games like Cuphead that looked very good. They showed Tomb Raider gameplay as well.
The problem Microsoft faces though is a lot of stuff is now lumped into Windows 10 so PC gamers don't care about a lot of stuff I just mentioned. To Sony's credit they use the whole calendar year to release big games on which makes the rest of this year seem rather slim in comparison to Microsoft's stacked line-up. I honestly think Sony's approach makes more sense since so many big games are coming out this year from 3rd party.

This stuff kinda of just seems like the same old MS stuff to me. I've never owned an Xbox although I've played all their big franchises over the years but more of this stuff doesn't make me want to spend money on their console. I know some people are really liked for these games and they have stuff brewing that look cool but nothing of all much note for me, really.

it's not odd or deceitful; he said this years back, long before this was even a hope again. misinformation gets spread like memes; the man says it was 70 mil for the series, i'm gonna believe him.
Well hindsight is 20/20, but I disagree. Both Shenmue 1 and 2 were commercial failures. I don't think its unreasonable to want to gauge interest in a project like this that involves millions of dollars. Sony isn't MS or Nintendo. They don't have the money to throw away on failed projects.
I never thought it'd happen but I'm thinking of selling my Shenmue 1 + 2 PAL DC editions (NiB) cause I got an offer for 350... I don't think the games will ever fetch that high again, we've probably reached peak and there's a lot of chances we might see the HD remasters coming now, totally slashing their value... I'm not sure. I could do with the money, fuckin' Amiibos.
One thing I know is that if the HD remasters happen then I'll have no interest in keeping my DC releases.
Decisions...

Now that the dust has settled and we're happy that shenmue 3 is coming, I think its safe to say this was a total abuse of kickstarter. They knew that it was going to get funded. The 2 million was never needed as sony spends that on private planes and hotels. It was a pure publicity stunt which worked but still isnt right
I love how it's only the backseat analysts that feel fans are being "exploited", not the fans themselves. I wonder how many of these whiners backed Bloostained a few weeks back? People are giving money of their own free will because Shenmue III would never happen otherwise (see: the last 14 years). Your negativity is a joke.
There was absolutely no need for the kickstarter imo. If anything I think would have made an even bigger impact if they just announced it as a console exclusive.
This tells me Sony and Sega are unsure of the details at this stage. The kickstarter was purely to gauge interest.

your statement don't make any sense... because they wanted to see the real level of interesting in the title if the interesting wasn't there... there wouldn't any logical reason to invest tens of millions of dollars in a game that none want.
Do you really believe Sony or any sane investor would inject tens of millions of dollars to back the game that fail the KS?

To add to this.
Sega seems to still have involvement to some degree. This means Sony would have had to talk with both the developer, and Sega to make any kind of deal happen.
Correct me if I'm wrong please.
This would mean the contract could have very well been dependent on a goal being met, and could still be under funded as far as we know.
And to the people calling deception; please rewatch the reveal and post word for word where they said they had no involvement, and we're never supporting this.
The fact that the very next day you got clarification from Adam means they wanted people to know it was going to be strongly supported.
He never said how much they would invest, but he did say they would give plenty of marketing power for it.
KS was pretty good at making it marketable, after it had already reached its goals, not before.
This could have been shenmue 1 and 2 remake, and failed hard, but people are busy thinking that something evil happened, and it's made this whole thing seem like a bazarro world where no one cares about the actual game, but how it's marketed.
I truly hope Sony helps fund a Shenmue 1 and 2 remaster. I wanna be excited for this game but without the ability to play the other two I just can't get to pumped. However if they create a remastered physical edition as well as a physical edition of Shenmue 3, they will have my money for all of those projects.

I feel that a Shenmue 1 & 2 remaster would be kinda awkward. Those games haven't aged terribly well and might turn folks off on the idea of picking up Shenmue 3. I would totally buy it (as would many Shenmue fans) but these games were kinda divisive even in their day and I imagine they would be even more so in 2015

I don't agree. Who would jump into Shenmue 3 without the background from the first two games. The average gamer won't do research on a games story just to play it. I think more people would buy it if they have access to the whole set. I can't imagine it being that much uglier then the many PS2 remastered games we already have.
Sony should have invested to make more vita games instead of funding another PS4 game! Now Sony Looks like they are The beroes of This E3 and that they are for gamers because of This, but The Reality is that they don't Care about their gamers at least not their Vita gamers!
