Satoru Iwata Has Passed Away

Absolutely shocked when I saw this on my FB news feed.

I can't remember another company president who stood out as much as he did aside from Sony's gaming division CEO. He will be missed as a Nintendo fan, and source of many memes during the Nintendo Wii reign.

Thanks. I appreciate this.

So it might be much to ask, but could someone add the Iwata Ribbon to my avatar on the top right corner and change Ganondorf's expression to either a smile or smirk? I'd greatly appreciate it.

May he rest in peace.

Damn, this is probably the first time the passing of a complete stranger makes me legitimately sad. He seemed to be a honest and good person in an industry full of douchebag executives.

It's heartbreaking to think that the recent Nintendo struggles with Wii U's financial failure and his excessive work load accelerated his illness.

He was an impressive developer and businessman, a true prodigy if you ask me. The videogame world lost a legend of the same historical importance as Bushnell or Yamauchi.

I'd be mean and go for the jugular but this man was unappreciated visionary despite how some gambles turned out. Iwata had balls and may he rise to heaven and show em how it's done.

Talk about bad timing for Nintendo.

Well, all of those shareholders who wanted him gone have now got their wish.

He will be sorely missed, and I don't know who will fill his shoes. He honestly seemed to love video games, and treated them more than just "product."

Add my vote to having the NEOGAF logo changed, and could someone kindly add a ribbon to my avatar? My PC is dead, and I would greatly appreciate it.

I was taking a short nap, then woke up to see this topic all of a sudden. I initially thought this was just a joke in exceedingly poor taste. This hurts so much. Iwata meant (means) so much to gaming, and to all of us. It seemed he was getting better.

RIP, Mr. Iwata. I feel as if part of my childhood has been taken from me with your passing.

I hope more stories of Iwata's interactions with press/other industry people continue to come out. Every story I've read continues to paint him as the genuinely kind, fun-loving guy I've always believed he was.

This is probably his last picture :(

damn, he does look so much skinnier here. interesting catch.

i will miss iwata asks, they were extremely insightful and enjoyable. hope we can still get that kind of casual interviews with developers going forward, however they choose to do it.

I've been following this thread since about 10 minutes after the news hit and I'm still in shock. This is such a sad day. Also amazingly, a friend of mine called me about 30 min ago and was asking me questions about the WiiU, he had just bought one and knew since I owned one I would know about what controllers worked with it, etc. He didn't know that Iwata had passed. :(

oh god no :(

in my heart he will be remembered as a true hero of gaming
nobody will ever be able to take his place

But Iwata always did make an effort to reach out to us, to talk to us not merely as consumers, but as lovers of games and of the craft of making games. And I'm always going to be so thankful to him for that. I'm going to miss him terribly.
Yup. How can anyone possibly replace him? :(

It's very sad to see his passing. The only positive I can see for nintendo is they may find a new leader who can get the company back to the top.

this is terrible, terrible news. he was too young. but he did so much. the man was one of the few executives to understand the best of what games can offer. sincere condolences to his family and friends.

RIP, mister Iwata, you were taken from us to young, but you will live on in your games.

A man with convictions, that fought for his employees, I tremble as what will happen to Nintendo now that he is gone.
