Satoru Iwata Has Passed Away

I've been crying since hearing the news, so I need a bit of an outlet to write this I suppose.

A few years ago a few thought I was kinda crazy because I got super frustrated I wasn't able to meet Mr. Iwata. During E3, I'd just show up too late here or there, always missing the window of opportunity to meet him. I really wanted to meet him because of everything he helped accomplish with Nintendo and I just wanted to say thanks. Call it something akin to meeting an idol or something, I don't know.

Anyway... my husband was lucky enough to work with him when he was in the RWC office and always had the nicest things to say about him. Well, whenever he was in the office, I'd have him take my 3DS to work to get Mr. Iwata's Mii and StreetPass. For SOME reason, he had all the rare puzzle pieces, who'da thunk it! One time when he was in town, I decided to write a private message to him, just for fun. I never thought he'd ever take the time to write something back.

Well, shockingly he did! I'm still stunned he took the time to do so because unlike E3, this is a company/work environment and I imagine he was fairly busy at a CEO.

Now he's passed on and I don't even have the right words. RIP Mr. Iwata, I really did like the banana joke.

Thanks for sharing this. It's heartwarming to see someone so genuinely involved with the community.

My best to his family and friends. He touched the hearts of a lot of people here with his games. I have no doubt he touched the hearts and minds of countless millions around the world... Rest in peace and may your legacy live on forever.

It's so much more upsetting knowing that one of the last public things he said was apologizing for this years E3 Direct :( He truly lived for gaming itself, in it's purest form: fun.

Incredibly saddened and my heart goes out to all his loved ones.

On a very personal note, he was responsible for compressing Johto enough in the original Pokemon Gold and Silver carts to fit Kanto in. That honestly blew my mind as a young kid and is a huge reason why I not only still love the series, but games in general.

I can never thank him enough for that.

This may actually have been the biggest and most surprising death of a major industry figure thus far.

Yamauchi and Baer were both advanced in their age when they died and had both been long retired. Even Yokoi was seemingly winding down in his career when he got killed and had his greatest work well behind him.

Iwata, on the other hand, was still incredibly young and was still very much active in major works.

And don't forget he was spearheading a huge transformation of Nintendo's policies (IP lending / crossovers, DeNA's mobile partnership, amiibo). He will truly be missed.

I don't care what anyone else says, the last ten years of Nintendo have been the best in their entire history. Thanks Iwata for always putting your employees and your fans first. Incredible talent and a great guy. RIP

This is the kind of shit that makes me even more sad to realize that he's gone.

Wow, that's incredibly sad and really surprising. I knew he'd been sick but thought he was on the mend? Or at least, nowhere close to this :(

R.I.P. Iwata-san, thanks for all you've done with and for Nintendo.

Wow, I'm speechless. The industry just lost one of its best. I'm truly sad to see him go, especially on such an uncharacteristically nintendo filled evening. I just introduced 2 of my nieces to mario kart and they instantly fell in love. My brother basically had to pry them away from my home.

RIP
Iwata

Shocking news. My first reaction was an audible "what". He will be remembered for how he shaped our wonderful hobby.
