Sometimes I think (morbidly) about how people will react when the giants of this industry die but it's not something I've ever been emotionally prepared for.
This may actually have been the biggest and most surprising death of a major industry figure thus far.

Yamauchi and Baer were both advanced in their age when they died and had both been long retired. Even Yokoi was seemingly winding down in his career when he got killed and had his greatest work well behind him.

Iwata, on the other hand, was still incredibly young and was still very much active in major works.

I'm in absolute shock I mean I knew he had health problems but he was so young I thought he'd be around for a long time to come.

R.I.P. Iwata you did so much for this industry and Nintendo and I hope you will never be forgotten.

Edit: Can I get one of those ribbons as well?

I remember this like it was yesterday.
Me too. I was so excited for excited for E3, especially the moment I saw that picture. Didn't turn out to be the best of E3's, but still. Legendary men.

I'm already oddly devastated from this loss, and now I worry about having to hear of Miyamoto passing within my lifetime. I don't ever want to log onto GAF and read that. :(

RIP. Very influential and memorable person in the industry, seemed like a genuine guy, and the stories of his programming were awesome. :(

A collection of most of the tweets from industry folks can be found on Dual Shockers.

Yeah, cancer. It can really destroy a person so fast... took away my sister-in-law couple years ago.

Rest in peace. And hopefully, Nintendo will pull through doing these times.

Wanted to share this quote from an Iwata Asks for Kirby's Return to Dream Land.

When I first started making Kirby, there was a kindergarten right next door. I'll never forget how moved I was the first time I saw doodles there of Kirby. That may have been the first time I realized that the world would recognize what we had made.

Because of that feeling, Kirby is special to me.

RIP

Fuck. This came out of no where and the sting hurts, R.I.P Satoru Iwata. What a fucking legend, he's the reason besides the games I'd watch the directs because I always know he'd be entertaining. There really is nothing to say to articulate the impact he had on gaming in general. You will always be missed.

I'm actually kinda worried about the future of Nintendo right now. With the Wii U bombing and the 3DS on its last legs, the last thing they're shaky unknown direction needed was the legend himself Iwata passing like this. We shit on several of his decisions, but so much of Nintendo is either directly contributed to him(the man made the code they used for Mario jumping physics!!!) or heavily influenced by him.

Got no idea what the future holds for Nintendo.

Few CEOs in the entertainment industry understand the craft, artistry, and creative process of their medium as well as Satoru Iwata did. He was one of the best programmers within the Nintendo, even as he climbed the corporate latter. In fact, I just read an amazing story about him. During the development of Pokemon Gold and Silver he told the dev teams that the games needed more content as sequels. They told him they were out of room on the cartridge, so he took it upon himself to compress the data in half over a single weekend. The extra space was then used for including the original Kanto region from Red and Blue. He wasn't even supposed to be a programmer for those games.

From his expert programming on Balloon Fight to his success with the Wii and DS, he has long been an essential part of Nintendo's identity and will not be forgotten.

Rest in Peace, Iwata san.

My second post in this thread. I still can't process this. A few people PM'd me. I tried to think aloud and clear my head.

The man exuded gentleness and a genuine desire to make people happy. All people. You feel that spirit, that love in every game he worked on, directly or indirectly. "Iwata laughs" became a meme. In truth it was the laugh of someone who values kind, innocent fun.

I think that's why he connected with us all. There's no judgment in Nintendo games. Just a warm, inviting sense of unconditional love.

Still can't believe he's gone. But in so many ways, he's not.

Thank you for this.
