The man was a coding legend. He recoded Pokémon Gold & Silver to allow for Kanto to be in it and unless I'm mistaken he recoded the entire Pokémon battle system in a day for Pokémon Stadium

It was one week according to Morimoto.

Still, the man is a legend.

Well then that some news to wake up to :O:O:O

wow did not expect that at all, we knew that he head some health problems etc but that is was THIS bad :(:(

RIP

I really do understand why he starting pushing for health for everyone.

I actually think it's w bit more interesting when people contextualize their well wishes with something like "I wasn't a fan of his leadership in recent years" or "I haven't owned a Nintendo console since XXX gen," or "I don't like Nintendo's current direction," etc. It actually paints a more fulfilling and interesting picture of our industry. Even though we may not agree with everyone or like everyone's businesses methods or console designs, we can all stop and appreciate what a giant Iwata was.
Cosign.

Having read the full set of tweets, it actually feels much more poignant to have the person who could essentially be considered Iwata's enemy come out and honor him. They had their differences, to be sure, and prefacing his condolences with this simply serves to underscore the gravity of the situation. This is hardly the speaking ill of the dead that some would like to believe it is.

R.I.P. Mr. Iwata. I can't wait to see what games and hardware you come up with when I join you up there someday!

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Look at it in a positive light: he paved the way for the company's future, and they'll carry on in his stead.

I know, and it's great that the recent changes have been made, they're the new basis for Nintendo's future. And I'm glad he did it before...dying.

i think Miyamoto and Reggie knew it wouldnt be much longer. Idk why I just feel that.

Thinking of Reggie's PR from a couple weeks ago of him defending Iwata saying he did not apologize kind of makes sense if he knew. Defending his friend till the end. :(

I did a triple take when I read the headline. For a moment I thought I was getting peoples' names mixed up. I couldn't believe it was THE Iwata. Man. I'm really saddened by this. I didn't realize I felt so much affection for the guy, but after looking at photos / videos / fan art, I'm definitely feeling it.

Completely shocked. I had read that he was ill, but I assumed treatment was going better than expected. Rest in peace Mr. Iwata, you will be missed.

When Reggie said, "Nintendo is going through transformation," at the last E3, I never would have thought that meant a new President/CEO/Chairman as well. :'(

Reggie is a PR mouthpiece for NOA. He has little to do with any decisions made about the company.

My guess would be Genyo Takeda. He and Miyamoto are temporary managing directors, and I don't think Miyamoto would want the CEO position.

Miyamoto is not suited at all for a CEO position, at least from his profile. I think the one who is going to be interim CEO until the next shareholder reunion (something I expect pretty soon) is Mr. Kimishima

This is not something I expected or wanted to wake up to... I have a great amount of respect for this man. I offer my condolences to family and friends. Rest in peace :(.

What a thing to wake up to. :(

The man was an absolute legend. I don't really follow "corporate types" but Iwata never came off as one despite being CEO. His passion was infectious.

RIP.

Well, he's now resting with gunpei yokoi and Hiroshi Yamauchi.

Can someone draw Gunpei and Hiroshi inviting Iwata into the pearly gates?

knowing Yamauchi, he would probably scold him for joining them too early right after greeting him.

It's been really hard holding back tears all night thanks to these pictures. The Nintendo community is awesome. What an incredible amount of support. I hope the people at Nintendo can see even just a fraction of this.

All the tributes going on in Splatoon are amazing.

bad gameplay lol
Apparently his miiverse profile has been updated :(

"Hello, I'm Satoru Iwata, global president of Nintendo.
Thank you for enjoying our products.
And please, don't be sad, Everything is going to be fine.
Please understand."

Made me cry again :(

That picture of his Miiverse profile is fake.

What an incredibly sad way to start the day.

Iwata-san was president during the GC days which, volatile as they were for Nintendo, is one of my favourite console periods. It takes a special man to run a business like Nintendo and he met every one of those pre-requisites.

My heart and thoughts go out to his employees, family and friends. You will be sorely missed Iwata-san.

That's not his Miiverse profile. It's fake.

This is his real one.

Hello, I'm Satoru Iwata, global president of Nintendo.
Thank you for enjoying our products.
Along with my duties as company president, I also focus on "Asking" and "Delivering news directly to you".

I can't stop crying after watching this

So many of us can relate too. Videogames are a form of escapism certainly, but the more personal reasons he noted are completely relatable to me. I had a good childhood but it had its patches and I grew up in a place where I just really didn't belong. Games and Nintendo specifically were my escape and if I didn't have any immediate commitments it's all I wanted to do. Just get away from bullshit.

Can we have one day, just one day where we don't have people justifying this drive-by crap?

This man died far too young and if your first reaction is to use that as a jumping-off point to get on a soapbox about Nintendo perhaps you could just keep that to yourself.

You're right, he was far too young. His belief and what he did in life made him who he was. There's people missing him for other reasons besides Nintendo. We should celebrate what he believed in and what he worked to do.

He made a lot of us smile. He welcomed us when we logged onto Nintendo consoles and he greeted us to talk about upcoming games. It's a very sad day when we lose someone like that, someone committed to who we are and what we enjoy. He should not be forgotten at all, but so we should celebrate what he accomplished, the memories we have of him, and never forget his work ethic.

I can't say much about him on a personal level, but he was an enjoyable person to watch. He wasn't just a man in a suit, he looked at us and he believed in gaming. I don't want to think about his salary or how much money he brought in. That will make him a legacy regardless. I was expecting to see him at their next reveal and E3 for years to come. We have some wonderful people in this industry that cannot be replaced. A large majority of gamers cannot be replaced. Money is obviously important in his line of work, but we appreciate these people regardless of what their investors say.

He might already know the outcome for Nintendo and the rest of the world. I just hope we don't forget such people. They were apart of everything that I enjoyed about Nintendo too.
