Rest in peace and condolences to his family, friends and (ex) partners.

.Do we know the cause of his death?

I remember reading about him having health issues, thus missing from Nintendo Directs and the recent E3.

Anyway, kudos for his success with the Wii and may he be an icon to Nintendo for future generations.

Yeah, seems to be a relapse of his bile duct tumour from last year :( Those bastard things have such a horrifically high mortality rate.

This wasn't what I expected when opening GAF in the morning... Iwata is truly an important person to me, he's responsible for so many memories and so much fun. My favourite game of all time, Earthbound wouldn't be the same without him and I would always smile when he introduced us to a Nintendo direct. Thank you for the memories Iwata, you will never be forgotten.

So damn sad. A great man who helped to create many of the amazing video games we can enjoy today. I'm sure he's inspired countless people, whether to get into the games industry or just play them. Many probably only know him as the face of Nintendo but he's been working hard to bring us video games for most of his life.

Thank you for everything. RIP.

55 is far too young. I wish he could have lived to see his vision for Nintendo's turnaround become a reality. I wanted Iwata to be the person to introduce the NX to the world, to drop more bombs, to transform Nintendo. It's sad to think that he won't see the future he helped create.

But I also remember all he did do and all his quirky charm.

Too bad about that, no doubt.

But if NX is a success, he'll get the credit...

I am usually a silent reader on here, but I want to express my feelings with all of you as well. Having started with Super Mario World in the 1990s, Nintendo has formed my childhood. I have so many nice and fun memories from these times that will stay with me forever. This is just what Mr Iwata wanted: Let people enjoy games and have fun. Many of us will keep these memories all their life, and Iwata-san is a big part of that. Thank you.

I hope he is in a better place now. As others have said, I usually also don't connect with people I haven't personally met. But Iwata's presence in all those Directs and other formats just created the illusion I actually know this guy, and that I can truly identify with him.

One sad last thought: We all criticized Nintendo for its poor E3 showing, and rightly so. But things are really put into perspective now. Iwata even personally apologized for the E3 show. I just hope that in his last days he didn't feel like he was all responsbile and guilty for Nintendo's recent struggles. He always did the best that he could, no matter if he succeeded with all his strategies. I sincerely hope he had no such thoughts.

To know he saved Melee....to realize how many relationships I've garnered through that one game alone....so eternal right now....his vision and talent are in soo many foundational pieces of my childhood and life now...wow....

R.I. P Iwata

Someone on Reddit theorized that the puppet direct at E3 was done so that the rest of the world couldn't tell that he was sick.

This is very sad news :/
Often criticised by many for his decisions. But everybody can acknowledge that he did a lot of great things. Man with passion for programming and developing games. Best shown in interview series Iwata Asks. This is truly a great loss.

RIP

What makes me feel down the most is that Iwata will now miss out on seeing the future of Nintendo (let alone being a part of it). He will not be able to know the future of the company, of Smash Bros, Kirby, Pokemon. İt's so upsetting. He was too young.
