He obviously didn't want the rest of the world to worry about him.

RIP, Iwata san.

I always thought the whole randomly turning into puppets motif was strange, specifically how Reggie stated it was to signify Nintendo "Transforming" but I just assumed it was just Nintendo being quirky, I never thought that it would be something like this.

Probably the worst/saddest gaming-related news of my whole life.

RIP Satoru Iwata, and a huge THANKS for the countless hours of joy you brought to my life as a gamer.

I am incredibly shocked and saddened to hear this news...

I will truly miss his cheerful presence in the Directs! I will also miss the feeling of security that came with Nintendo being led by someone with a true interest in gaming and a programmer's mind.

May you rest in peace Iwata san, and find plenty of banana's up there. Thank you for every game you had a hand in.

(Two side notes are that I am also very curious who will take over from him, and what this will mean for Nintendo, and that I personally am already struggling with the recent death of my grandma and as such have pretty much no defense anymore against such sudden losses...)

Damn, I woke up and I was reading the news when this hit me. This is so sad and unexpected. I thought he was recovered after the surgery. He was really the heart of Nintendo. He made even the PR more fun with Nintendo Directs and Iwata asks. He was a creator more than a executive and he was genuinely enthusiast about games. A terrible loss.

I can't believe how sad this makes me feel.

R.I.P. Mr. Iwata

I'm heartbroken.

No words.

The future of Videogames just got a lot grimmer :(
Iwata was too soon...but to think about those who influenced the industry from late 80's, early 90's reaching the precipice.....

I look at my dad and watch how he reacts to old stars and music artist who pass away monthly...never thought I'd have similar feelings.

Miyamoto...Tanaka...Kondo...Uematsu...Kojima...Nomura...countless others who I legit never want to read about like this.

That reality is beyond sobering...

Ugh :( now I regret all of the sourness I had for the last Direct... Iwata cared so much about every one of them, and the last one he releases, we hated. :(

It's okay to admit it sucked. The silver lining is that he actually addressed the criticism instead of stonewalling it. A very human move, unlike the usual corporate response.

And who knows if his plans for Nintendo in the future will turn things around.... It's clearly been a downtime for Nintendo, and they've had plenty of those only to come back with a vengeance.

Wow, I had no idea he was severely ill. :( Very unexpected to me.

He always came over across as humble and passionate and he was very smart going by his programming track record.

Rest in peace. My condoleances to his family.

What? Iwata was a superb coder

he also debugged Smash Bros melee by himself to avoid a delay and launch the game on the date they were targeting

Amazing to hear stories like this.

Someone I know had posted this on Facebook earlier and I was shocked. I couldn't believe it, it seemed so sudden. The gaming world has lost one of the greats. RIP

I'm also kind of worried about who will succeed him. Iwata, despite his faults, was a pretty good balance of gamer and businessman. I just hope that whomever succeeds him can do his legacy justice.

It doesn't seem like the community wants to talk about that now... It's been shouted down by "too soon" and mods have locked those threads for the time being. I think in a day or so we'll have that conversation.

As I opened GAF this morning, the top thread was 'Your favourite memories of Satoru Iwata'. I thought, "odd thread, that's the sort of thing you see when someone has died".

Then my eyes scanned down and I saw this thread title. I'm genuinely shocked.

RIP

Rest in peace, Satoru Iwata.

Really sucks to wake up to these news :( I was really surprised when i read it. I knew that Iwata had been sick with cancer, but i thought he was doing much better seeing that he was runing the company again. Does anyone know what exactly that he died from? I cant help to wonder if he started working again too soon, and that it would be better if he had taken a longer time to recover from surgery :(

Its kinda strange how some people influence others. I've never met or spoken with Iwata, yet it feels extra sad when he died. I guess its because you get some kinda relation with a person even if you just read and hear a lot about him/her. I guess maybe its also due to the suddenty of the news. It was not something that i expected at this point in time at all.

Takeda is acting in his place for the time being, and he has a similar programming background, as well as a hardware development background.

Reading all of these posts and seeing how many hearts Iwata has touched really shows me just how much love and passion he put into this community and what he did. It's as if you can tangibly see the love floating out.

I want my son and I to be a part of this magic that this man has helped create. Today, I have decided for sure that when he is old enough I will be investing him into the Nintendo universe and community.

Mr Iwata if you are hearing this, please know that you are not done touching lives. My son will know your work, your love, and I hope you are up there somewhere looking down at us throwing your head back in a laugh because we are having fun doing what you worked so hard to let us have the opportunity to do.

gawd fuck. I opened reddit not logged in and saw it and thought it was some kind of shit joke.

wow. dude had a pretty young demeanourand I'm genuinely shocked and saddened by this. :(

I just got Earthbound out of respect for Iwata. I have heard nothing but good things about this (also, that ending spoiler I unfortunately found out), but I'm interested in working towards that. RIP Iwata. Balloon Fight was the 2nd game I've played next to SMB, and it was one of the most memorable experiences as of yet.

I think the biggest issue is that Iwata's passing is definitely untimely. It happened while he is still very much the face if Nintendo. It is not the case of say Yamauchi who was older and retired. He passed on the torch to Iwata before his passing. Iwata is just gone so suddenly... I am so shocked and hope for no more untimely passing by all of our other legendary game designers.

Never a CEO was that close to consumers (Nintendo Direct), and likewise to developers (Iwata Asks).

The Wii & DS were an incredible success. He also made the medium approachable to everybody.
Thanks to him the industry is thinking about new ways to play video games.

He will be immensely missed. I personally feel like I witnessed the departure of all Big N Giants (Yokoi, Yamauchi and today Iwata)
Miyamoto must feel too lonely by now.

May he rest in peace. He was loved by everybody.

Who's gonna drop the bomb now? :'(
