This made me tear up, but at the same time feel weirdly better.

What? This is crazy. So sad for his family. Do we have any idea what happened?

Cancer, of an especially rare and especially deadly form. The type of cancer that, once obtained, is one that puts an expiration date on you. Despite, Iwata continued his work at Nintendo trying to steer it into the right direction, speaking leaps and bounds of his character.

Now every time this happens during the end credits of various Nintendo games, I'm going to shed a tear...

R.I.P Iwata ,Very sad news to go to work to.

I used to game since the NES era but i'll always be thankfull for what Iwata has done with the Wii and DS, some of my best gaming years : the Wii for bringing all generations in the family to game together ( first -and only time- my old folks played video games, and with the younger nieces and grand children too, great memories) .. And the DS for having one of the most diverse and amazing game library ever.

I'm just a little afraid of watching the credits of my Nintendo games because I know the profound sadness I will feel as Iwata's name appears last. I must find it in myself to proudly proudly enjoy the excitement and joy he has brought to my life, but it will take time.

I have no words. Since I've heard the news I'm kind of shocked.

Itoi and Iwata seemed to be best friends since so many years. His words are really touching :'(

Thanks for everything Iwata. Rest in peace.

Well now I know how I'm gonna feel when any of my other heroes finally pass, although in the case of Mr Sakurai, it may just be worse. I've only felt like this with James Gandolfini and Robin Williams in my whole life, this is the third year running someone I've admired greatly that I've never met has died. This one has hit me hardest though. As much as love those actors and their respective works, nothing they've done comes close to my love of gaming and Nintendo. :(

Damn....

My respects to his family, friends and colleagues.

It does not surprise me that the state of his health was unknown - Satoru Iwata was a great leader, but also a great humanitarian, and to protect others most likely attempted to shoulder the burden alone to spare them the stress.

He will leave a legacy of being a caring, nurturing father both to his family, and to this industry.

May you rest in peace Mr. Iwata.

I was at E3 a few years back getting into a lift to go from the biz level down to ground floor - Nintendo's E3 analyst briefing had just finished and as I got in I saw Iwata stood in the lift with (I think) Bill Trinnen. Just before the doors closed an analyst and his pal got in but obviously failed to notice Iwata stood there at the back. This guy then started sounding off about Nintendo's strategy, calling out Iwata and saying what he thought Nintendo should do and how a load of stuff at the briefing was all wrong etc etc.

By now a hush had descended on the lift and I cast a sidelong glance to Iwata wondering if he was going to pipe up and humiliate this guy. Stupid thought ;) He was just stood there with Bill and they were both grinning like kids as this guy kept on. Finally the guy thought something must be up as the rest of us in the lift were now grinning like crazy looking at him, wondering if he would notice who was in the lift with him. Finally he did, turning around and looking at Iwata wide-eyed obviously thinking "shit wtf have I just done here omg".

Iwata just grinned even harder (as if that was possible) and patted him on the arm and made perfectly clear through his expression that everything was cool. The rest of us just cracked up and walked off one anecdote richer about what a lovely man Iwata was.

It is so rare that we get a senior exec with his demeanour, sincerity and genuine passion for his work. I really hope one part of his legacy is that we will see more people like him rising to the top. RIP Satoru Iwata, you really did a great job.

That story was really funny lol. Thanks for sharing!

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Ugh, I just realized that when I finally will be back on the Nintendo train when they release their next handheld (I skipped the DS and 3DS in favor of the PSP and Vita), that will be a train without Iwata as the driver......somehow this saddens me :(
Don't worry man... Iwata made sure that the train mive in the right direction and we will benefit from him. I really feel the with NX he laid out the foundation for Nintendo to have a solid hardware and software eco system for the next decade.

I think we we will see Iwata being praised again when the NX is unveiled.... Shit probably will tear up once it's unveiled knowing it's theist system he worked on.

Just go to work and turned on Pandora. What's the first song? Green Day - Good Riddance (Time of Your Life).

God damn it GAF, tears are not how I'm supposed to start a Monday morning.

Junior, please.
I always admired all the great ideas he brought to the table, steering the ship through good and bad times, always with an infectious smile on his face.

Truly a great leader, the industry has lost someone special. Thank you Iwata.

Did he return and do any public appearances after the operation became known (except the muppet one)?
I thought he was back on track? Wich was his last one?

This is great. Thank you for this story. I truly envy everyone who got to see Iwata without a computer screen in the way, but it never diminished his charm or friendliness.

Now I got that damn See You Again song stuck in my head after reading Itoi-san's conmments, haha :')

Such a sad, sad news. It's always sad to see a man at this age die because of cancer. I wish to his family all the best, the gaming world lost one of the most positive figures .

I hate you.
it seems that Iwata passed away on Saturday. Don't know the exact time, of course, but man...reading your post I've realized that on Saturday around noon (Italian time) I finished the single player mode of my review copy of Devil's Third. Curious about all the fuss around NoA localization/publishing issues and so on, I've taken a close look at credits, seeing/noting the Iwata mention at the very end as Executive Producer. Probably around the exact time of him passing away.

Damn.

I was already busted up yesterday, but the photo of Iwata's Rainbow Road passage got me choked up again. Ughhhhh... that man is notorious for pulling megaton surprises, even now.

Broken Joystick

At least you can talk. Who are you?
When I think about Iwata, I think of all the funny stuff he did, but as a business man, he was incredibly smart. Sure, we can discuss financials of Wii U until we're blue in the face, but the Wii and DS really were something else entirely.

I like to think, when he announced that the Wii's first name was Revolution, he wasn't talking about the console, but rather, himself.

I haven't feel this sad since Sega died. A true legend, a true gentleman and a wonderful human being passed away. You will be missed but you won't be forgotten Iwata-san.

No more quirky Directs with Iwata :(

The thing I'm truly going to miss the most is not only his Directs, but the whole Iwata Ask's panel.

I really enjoyed reading those developer interviews.

The Directs were cool. I don't know of many other companies in which the CEO himself acted as the company face that interacted with the customers and directly told them what new products were coming out and when to expect them. Usually this kind of information is less informal and is done via a PR press release.

Is GAF going to send a huge condolences card like when we sent Iwata that get well card?

Also maybe it would be cool to compile a video of the Top 25 best Nintendo Direct Moments with Satoru Iwata or something along those lines. It would be nice to create some kind of fan memorial.
