Essential New Vegas mods for a first play-through?

Sprint mod for sure. Game is unplayable without that. The F3 one sucks, sadly, but it's nicely implemented in F:NV.

If your PC can run them, get texture mods I guess. I tried to install some but it tanked my framerate like crazy. :(

When I first played I wanted to go in vanilla, but the stutters made my entire being from the physical body to the depths of my soul just break down and cry.

Gotta remove that stutter.

Outside of that, minor Ui mods and patches just make things better but that's pretty much all you should want/need. You won't know what you do and don't like and what you want fixed if you don't play it vanilla.

I'd recommend project nevada. a few tweaks that make the shooting better, mostly. It just makes the combat feel more polished.

Thank you, everyone!

So I've installed the following:

Nexus Mod Manager
NVSE
Stutter Remover
Anti Crash
4GB Fallout New Vegas
Yukichigai Unofficial Patch

How do I make sure that YUP is running through NMM if I load my game via fnv4gb.exe after installing the 4GB mod? I assume it is detecting Stutter Remover and Anti Crash via the NVSE Plugins folder in the main game folder, but I'm worried the Yuki patch isn't effective despite activating in NMM, you know?

I'm gonna chime in with the Revelation Interfeace Mod:

It will work. Mods start working on game start up, no matter how it starts up. You're fine.

A good list there as well. I recommend nothing else unless you feel the need to change something. Play around a bit and have fun.

And I hope by "main game folder" you mean the data folder. That's where NVSE > Plugins should be. Usually "main game folder" is where the exe is located.

Subscribed for my second playthrough whenever I'll have the time to do that.

Anyone able to recommend specific ENBs for NV?i dig the gold/yellow aesthetic they were going for with the desert and money/gambling theme in it

There are a lot of really good armor texture overhauls too, but thats a handful of mods and a bit more work.

Use LOOT for sorting load orders: https://loot.github.io/ (though with just this handful you probably won't need it much)

Create a throwaway character to test it all out.

Here's what I used. No real gameplay changes, just enhancements.

I played on a higher difficulty to compensate for having a perk every level. It made the game more fun.

Is there a mod that makes the shooting a bit more enjoyable? I keep trying to play the game but every time I quit about 30 minutes in because I can't stand the gun play.

I recommend only using Yukichigai Unofficial Patch - YUP to start with. Play the game for a bit and then decide if you want more. It's possible like others mentioned, you might want something like MTUI or DarnUI to have a better user interface. NMC's Texture Pack and Vurt's Flora Overhaul are pretty safe.

From the mod description (it's always good to read these for all mods):

To play it safe with your load order, install LOOT.

Thanks guys.
Turns out you can sort the loading order via NMM, just need to click Plugins on the left

I'd seriously recommend replacing Mission Mojave with YUP. So many unnecessary, counter-productive changes (e.g. removing GRA variations of weapons from the game, random NPC appearance changes, etc). YUP is a lot cleaner, and doesn't require tons of compatibility patches.

I know this isn't mod related but does anyone know how to fix some frame rate issues I'm having? No matter what the settings are on my frame rate won't go above 30.

Indeed, Obsidian made sure you got those random crashes and stutters to keep you on your toes!

Edit: Oh and those bugs? It's what Obsidian would have wanted, make them proud OP, make them proud!
Not to mention, they purposefully made those games to be very much moddable, so uh... yeah.

I remember reading that the DLC (or some of it) were hard for people who didn't invest points in guns or laser guns? how many points should I have before starting the harder DLC?

Try to be around level 15-20 before dead money at least. 50-60 points and you'll do just fine. Get the med and repair skills up just a bit too.

Thanks! I'm currently level 8, going to start Honest Hearts soon as I've read it is best to do it early

Hmmmm, so I'm not sure if this is working. Seems like any mod that I enable in the NMM doesn't activate if I launch the game from the 4GB mod executable.

I extracted the contents of the 4GB mod to a separate folder and not the main game folder. Is this the problem?

You would be fine with Project Nevada.

Project Nevada is honestly a 2nd/3rd time through mod, imo.

It changes a shitton, but even if you take the 'no-change' version, it messes with a lot of the stuff in the base-game in terms.

Most of it is arguably for the better, or at least, more immersive, but I don't know if I'd call it necessary, at least if you already have the sprint mod.

Nevada Skies can be fun, as long as you either don't mind rad-sandstorms or turn them off. (You'll also probably need to get one of the brighter nights .esp mods unless you like pitch black nights lol.)

Personally I like weapon mods expanded, but that has some potential balancing issues, especially in de-modding some of the unique weapons, which can be hard to purchase if you were looking forward to finding them.

I extracted the contents of the 4GB mod to a separate folder and not the main game folder. Is this the problem?

IIRC you have to move at least some of the contents of the 4gb mod to a specific sub-location within the main Fallout NV directory.

edit: Though I may be thinking of the script extender.

I checked the 4gb Updated page and it says while not required, it is recommended you keep the 4gb stuff in the main game folder.

I do that and, as it suggests, just create a shortcut to the executable and use that instead. All of my mods work fine. There should be no mod issues with your method though. Which ones aren't working for you?

Yeah, I figured it out. Followed these instructions:

Both FOMM and NMM have a Custom Launch Command feature which you can tailor to run the FNV4GB launcher. FNV4GB will then automatically run NVSE if it has been installed, and then also start the game.

To do that ... from within the Mod Manager (FOMM / NMM) click the "Settings" button, then select the "Fallout: New Vegas" tab. Now enter a "Custom Launch Command" in the "Command" field such that FNV4G.exe is referenced with a complete path specification; for example:

c:\program files (x86)\steam\steamapps\common\fallout new vegas\fnv4gb.exe

Click OK and exit settings. Next, for FOMM, click the "File" menu bar item, then select its "Launch Game" drop-down entry, then click the "Launch Custom Fallout: New Vegas" entry. Or, for NMM, select the "Launch" drop-down entry, then click the "Launch Custom Fallout: New Vegas" entry.

I'm currently playing using
-NMC's texture pack (the largest size)
-New Vegas Uncut -Open Freeside
-FNV Realistic Wasteland Lighting
-Interior Lighting Overhaul
-Mojave Nights
-ENB (ENB of the Apocalypse)
-Wasteland Flora Overhaul (dead version)
-EVE (Essential Visual Enhancements)
-Weapon Retexture Project
-Fallout Character Overhaul
-MGs Neat Clutter Retextures
-Wasteland Clothing Hires retexture
-Enhanced Blood Textures
-Enhanced Camera
-MTUI
-New Vegas Stutter Remover
-Mission Mojave - Ultimate Edition
-Hall of Equipment
-aMidianBorn NV Book of Water (Book of Steel & Book of Flesh)
-Hectrol FX Dustorm Deluxe HighRes Retex

And stuff you have to use with this combination of mods is
-Fallout Mod Manager
-4GB Launcher
-New Vegas Script Extender
-ENB for New Vegas

It took a while to download and install everything, but the game looks great. Didn't really bother with any mods that significantly changed the gameplay.

I just can't agree with this suggestion. Not all mods are created equal. Sure, maybe you don't want to change the world from top to bottom on your first playthrough. But some "quality of life" improvements can greatly enhance your enjoyment of the game and fix potential issues that may literally make you hate New Vegas.

Actually its better to play without a mod first mainly so you do not get unrealistic expectations of the series created by modifications done with a mod.

Having at least a base knowledge of what the game is all about vanilla then with mods is far better than the other way around.

*fixed typo with = without

Most of the mods I run are graphical ones and aren't super nessisary but I do like navada skies and electro city
The mod I like the most is JSaywers mod. He's the head developer if the game so to me that mod is the directors cut of new Vegas. The changes to rest, sleep, healing, food etc brings back some of the survival aspects of the game. You actually stop to eat and drink and stock up on supplies as its really easy to get dehydrated in a irradiated desert. The changes to weight also made things a little more realistic. Overall it's the only mod I'd label mist have

As to all the other mods people have listed. Many are great but if this is your first time playing stick with mods that preserve the spirit of the game. You can experiment with the more exotic stuff 2nd time 'round

Really struggling with adding these mods. Im new to it but I can normally pick things up quickly.

There seems to be many steps to it that are confusing me. Some go into data file, some into gane file etc

What should I be installing at very first step?

Basically I want the texture pack, stutter and any other bug fixer.

Also I see there are large, medium abd small texture packs. Which one should I get for 1080p.

Im running an overclocked 970, 4690k build with 16gb ram

Are you using a mod manager? For most mods they will do everything for you.

First, just use the Fallout Mod Manager, it's simple and will install everything correctly for you.

Second, manual installation is not hard, it's super easy. Pretty much EVERY mod will go into your Data/ folder. That's the folder that should have sub-folders for "meshes" and "textures."

Third, clearly you should be going with the large texture pack.

Fourth, most mods contain a Read Me detailing the exact instructions on how to install them or at the very least provide such an installation guide on the mode page description.

DarnUI Imo is the best Interface replacer. Can't stand MTUI.

Also get Adjustable HUD and iHUD, adjustable so you can move the compass to the top of the screen ala Skyrim, iHUD hides stuff like brackets and everything unless you wanna use it.

ENBs certainly make the atmosphere 100x better, but you need one with Sweetfx so it includes injected smaa, otherwise jaggies everywhere, unless you can DSR upto 1440p or 4k.

Download the Nexus Mod Manager first. Almost all the mods you'll want will automatically install using that. If they don't, the mod creator will make it explicitly clear (since basically everyone uses the mod manager) and will give directions on how to install their mod.

http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/55061/? & http://nvse.silverlock.org/ got these two? those should be first. Super easy. Just follow the instructions, you'll boot the game through Fallout 4gb from now on.

After that, download The Nexus Mod manager. Fallout Mod manager hasn't been updated in years, don't use that one.

After the Nexus Mod manager is installed, http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/m...ds.com/newvegas/ajax/modfiles/?id=43135&pUp=1 click: "download with manager" for all three parts of the LARGE pack

Activate part 1 of the mod in NMM, it'll install, do the same with parts 2 & 3 but select NO when those two ask if you want to upgrade to new version. Go to tools at the top of NMM and turn archive invalidation off and back on. boot the game and test it out..

use https://loot.github.io/ to sort your load order as you start to add more mods.
