PlayStation VR will be “priced as a new gaming platform,” says Sony boss

Sony’s PlayStation VR headset will be priced similarly to a new gaming consoles, according to CEO Andrew House.

Speaking with Bloomberg at TGS 2015 (thanks, MCV), House didn’t reveal a specific price, but if his comment is anything to go by, the headset cost around $399.99. That’s the price of a standard 500GB PS4 in the US. In the UK, the standard console’s suggested retail price is around the £350 mark.

The SRP is listed above because depending on the retailer, the console can run quite a bit less.

The firm expects ten titles to launch alongside the headset when it hits the market next year.

Those vague quotes are probably worse than saying the actual price
Oculus: "Will cost you a total of $1,500 if you include a PC powerful enough to run it"
PS VR: "Will cost you the price of a home console. $300-400"

Of course it is. It's the first generation. Selling it for $100 could be suicide. Who knows what R&D and marketing for this thing will cost.

It will be all about the games. Little gimmicks and 10 minute experiences? No way will it be worth $300. Amazing AAA lengthy content you can play with comfortably? People will shell out whatever is required to play it.

Basically if No Mans Sky works in VR it will sell tons.

I feel as though no one should be surprised by this.

The surprise to me is why Sony is sinking so much money into what will likely be a niche product for a while still.

Definitely taking a wait and see approach with this like I did with Move and Vita.

I trust Sony to do well with their main console, not so much with the side stuff.

Wonder if he's talking about the whole package with Move controllers and camera. If people can save $100 or so owning that stuff separately it'll be nice.

I'm confused that people are surprised by this. It's not exactly a secret that VR headsets are expensive - you'll have to pay 300$ to 400$ for Oculus and Vive as well.

In the beginning, VR headsets won't target the mainstream mass market. Give it a few years, at least.

Is this the same guy who said "we'll watch our competitors go first" and then revealed the PS4 before the Xbox One? Who at Sony said we won't have much to show at E3 and then had a ton of stuff to show?

I don't believe him.

Urgh, yeah as others have said, it's the fact this is restricted to PS4 only which makes the price point harder to swallow, espicially for people who have yet to own a PS4.
This makes me worry about Oculus Rift price, ha ha. Doesnt that have even higher specs? I know resolution for sure anyway. I was hoping it'd be around £200 at least.

No way it was ever going to be the in $99-$199. That would lose them so much money. Now $249-299 is ideal. $399 like I said above would have to come with all the bells and whistles.

That's true. It just seems to me that whatever R&D money they've put into this would be better spent elsewhere at this point.

They already missed the boat once by letting Nintendo head the way for motion control gaming (even though Sony had the wand first).

VR definitely looks like it will be a thing in the future, getting in on it now seems like a smart move.

So Sony spent all of this money on R&D and marketing only to release this with a console price? If this means 399$ then it'll probably fail really hard.

A Rift DK2 is $350, so I would definitely expect PSVR to be in the same ballpark. They may sell at a loss because they'd make it back with software (and the fact that the device would increase interest in the PS4 in general) but they won't sell at that much of a loss.

That said, my guess would be no more than $299. $250 would also be in the realm of possibility, but $199 or less ain't happening.

I'm hoping around £200-250 max... anything higher than that, then I would be worried that it's going to be too high to hit the numbers they are going to need to get games made for it.
