The PS TV can now run every single app/game without restriction (via simple hack)

Sigh. This thing was selling not only PSTV's but also games (and possibly even their ridiculously overpriced memory cards). Simply because it allowed the PSTV to do what it should already do in the first place. V.disappointing. Sony really should have just ignored this, especially considering the terrible sales of this thing (caused by Sony themselves).

Nobody bought the PSTV. Sony never promoted it. Sony doesn't support it. But when there's a hack that makes it slightly more useful and fun, they swoop in to stop it. Why? To stop piracy? So they dedicate resources to stop piracy on a device few people own instead of supporting it? If they had put half of their anti-hacking efforts into support, we'd have a Netflix app on the device.

I Was sure there were games without mandatory touch controls which still wouldn't run on PSTV. What about PSP games? Are those all accessible on the thing? Sorry I'm on my phone at the moment.

Yes the PSTV is hardware wise identical to a Vita just lacking gyro and camera controls.

In fact every single PSP game that works on a Vita WILL work on the PSTV.

Case in point Castlevania Dracula X Chronicles was released in the PSN Store and works on European PSTV's Whitelist, but it does not work on the US PSTV, because of said Whitelist.

Why Sony thought a Whitelist was ever a good idea instead of opt-in and warnings that software may or may not be incompatible and let the player make the call is baffling. This is a complete fucking embarrassment.

Is it still possible to block the addresses that PS TV grabs the whitelist from when there is a connection to PSN, in order to preserve the exploit? Or have Sony found a way around that too?

The reason behind most of this, as well as Vita not having all PSP PSN titles working, is almost certainly licensing, ranging from genuine deal kudzu to things like "we made Vita version cheaper BECAUSE IT WAS SUPPOSED TO NOT WORK ON TV".

It is still possible to use the exploit if we don't update the firmware?
I bought a Vita TV and it will be delivered on Saturday...

I just brought my Vita TV upstairs to play P4: DAN on the big screen and I've been enjoying it. I've even been thinking about buying some DLC (already downloaded the free stuff), so the timing of this could not have been worse for me. I also want to auto upload my save files, so if I want to play it on Vita, I easily can. Crap. Worst case scenario, I buy and download everything on the vita, then swap memory cards.

You still have to associate it with your PSN account and I think that requires online activation, but I am not sure if there's a workaround.

My PSTV arrives in the mail TODAY. Couldn't they have waited ONE MORE DAY to release the firmware???????????

Can I do the exploit still, or will have I have to update before I can do anything?

I've started updating to 3.55, want to test that theory of blocking the URLs where the whitelists are grabbed from.

For the greater good.

EDIT 1: Update finished, games still work, and the E-mail app is still showing a picture icon for the #0 and "click on the image icon" emails. Going to take the plunge and attempt to connect to PSN and see what happens.
EDIT 2: Making a backup of the PSTV and sending it over WIFI as there is no other way to backup stuff on a PSTV. Thanks, Sony.
EDIT 3: Downloading a previously incompatible with PSTV PSP game - Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions off PSN Store on the PSTV. The game launched! I checked if Dangan Ronpa (EU), also previously incompatible with PSTV, and that also works perfectly too! Seems like the whitelist was not overwritten and compatibility remains full. Not sure if this was because I blocked the URLS or not, but I'll take it. Next step is to see if switching memory cards work.
EDIT 4: Switching cards only work if you have performed the whitelist exploit on the card you wish to switch to.

Stupid question incoming. Is it possible to play some PS1 games in multiplayer using PS TV and 2 controllers?
Yes.

So you updated, downloaded a game on the PS Store and the whitelist didn't get reset? Other people are saying downloading from the store resets the whitelist, correct? So downloading doesn't always reset it?

I just bought Corpse Party 1 and 2 and want to play them on my PStv but I don't want to risk losing the exploit so I guess if need be I'll buy a second PStv.

Thanks for being our guinea pig :p

How do you do the 'blocking URLs' thing?

Why do so many people think Sony is the only factor here? Licensing, rights holders....the usual roadblocks are all at play here.

Edit: Obviously, the onus is on Sony to look into these things before releasing a half-assed product like the PSTV.

Sony blocks its own Vita games from running on the PSTV. So it's not strictly a licensing issue.

Nope, you don't need to update. It's absolutely fine. When I bought mine last weekend It asked for my PSN details in the setup and it didn't require an immediate update when it went online. The PSTV was on 3.50, I updated it afterwards.

So when you get your PSTV today you can put your PSN account information in and activate it, then just disable auto updates when you get onto the bubbles menu.

But do I need to download the email app from the store, or is it preinstalled?
If I have to download it, won't the store require me to have latest update?

How do you do the 'blocking URLs' thing?

I referred back to the following post:

SURGEdude and me investigated the whitelists a bit more, and vitacl.ww.dl.playstation.net and vitacl.xx.dl.playstation.net seem to be servers the Vita refreshes the whitelists from, as I went through a variety of situations where it occasionally will reset the whitelist with them blocked via URL Filter which didn't reset the lists, unblocking them and doing something that previously prompted a connection error (like clicking the update symbol on a Vita game) did. So there's that, and to note with them blocked it still allowed access to the E-Mail application and even the PS Store!

For example, I was allowed to download Peace Walker again and still having the whitelist stay modified. However, just to note ahead, since we also were looking into copy-restrictions to make blocked PS1/PSP games happen we found out that since the PS3 seems to pull a whitelist from those servers to determine which content is allowed to be copied upon connecting with a Vita, blocking these addresses makes you unable to copy over any content from the PS3.

Your router should have a "Web Filter" or a "URL filter". First, test if it actually works with a website such as "http://www.facebook.com". If it does not load or shows an error, then you have a working URL filter. Now add the following URLs:

vitacl.ww.dl.playstation.net
vitacl.xx.dl.playstation.net

Now, I'm not certain if this method is 100% failsafe, so I'd recommend waiting for more results and research into it, before making the jump to 3.55 if you're unsure of it.

People stop panicking, email app doesn't require updating the fw.

Btw, what's this V2 thing I hear?

Awesome, can I also connect to psn if I hadn't done so already?

The exploit still works.

Wait, so if I hadn't done the exploit yet, went home and updated, I could still do the exploit? If so then the OP needs another update because I went off of that.

Hopefully that's the case.

Some Sony published games aren't compatible originally though.

Just because they published it doesn't mean they own all the rights. When Vibribbon was brought to the American PSN, they had to get the music re-licensed. One of the rumors that Mega Man Legends was not brought to PSN for a long time was due to the voice acting.

No, if you haven't updated the fw on your PSTV you can still do the exploit. The email app doesn't require 3.55.

Well, I managed to play and record all of DR1, the only game I was interested in that was blocked off, so I'm sated I got to use the hack this long.

I blocked the following web addresses ...using the URL filter on my modem, where the whitelist is obtained by the PSTV from downloading a game from PSN:
vitacl.ww.dl.playstation.net
vitacl.xx.dl.playstation.net
(credit to Dunkley for this)

I'm on 3.51 and a 4GB card. Can I upgrade to a higher capacity card without updating?

You should be able to. Make a backup of the 4GB card using the pc utility then load it on to the new, larger card.

No idea how you do this with a pstv though. Witht he vita, you had to connect it to your pc and follow some instructions. It's *probably* the same on pstv..

Unlike the Vita, the PSTV can only use Wi-Fi transfer in conjuction with the Content Assistant. Not sure about Ethernet, or if that's even possible.
Also, backing up, or transferring will require a system update to the latest version, so be careful.

Thanks, I forgot to mention I have a vita. I'll give it a shot.

Haven't gotten to do this update yet. Was waiting for the weekend when I have time.

So what I should do when I hook up my PSTV (Everything's set up already, this is an old PSTV I've had for a long time), is turn off auto update if it's on? Then I can do the hack just as before?
