Not true. I love Halo, and there hasn't been a multiplayer FPS that I've enjoyed since Halo 3. Halo reinvented the genre, then proceeded to throw away nearly everything that made it unique. I played 5 at E3 and it was fun, but I don't think there's any skill involved in grinding 600 hours for the insta-kill weapon, which is how basically every FPS is nowadays. COD clones. If 5 is a return to form, I'm stoked. Count me in day one. If it's more of the same bullshit, it's just another cod clone, so why not just play cod?
I think you'll be pleased with the direction 343 has gone in with Halo 5.
The classic Arena multiplayer you loved in Halo 3 is back, and with none of the ordinance or loadouts that ruined Halo 4. Everyone starts with an Assault Rifle and a Pistol just like they did in Halo 3, with weapons such as the Battle Rifle, Sniper Rifle, Rocket Launcher, Energy Sword, and so on in set locations on the map. The biggest difference between Halo 5 and the previous Halo games are the new abilities they have introduced. Here's a basic rundown of what they are:
- Sprint: Self-explanatory, but now in Halo 5 your shields don't recharge while sprinting and the gap between base movement speed and sprint speed has been decreased, meaning that you still move at a perfectly reasonable pace while not sprinting.
- Thrusters: Similar to the Thruster Pack ability in Halo 4, except you stay in first-person while using it and the cooldown is shorter (but not to the point where you can spam the ability).
- Ground Pound: Look at the ground and hold the melee button while you're mid-air and you will charge up your thrusters to launch you towards the ground dealing damage in the area where you land. It is not an instant kill and it is most commonly used to weaken the shields of an enemy player.
- Spartan Charge: While sprinting, hold the melee button to charge a short distance forward and knock back opponents. An instant kill if performed on an enemy's back, but anywhere else and it will just weaken their shields.
- Slide: If you hold crouch while sprinting, you will slide a short distance and when you stop, you will be crouched. Makes going under crouch-height obstacles smoother. You can shoot while sliding.
- Clamber: If you jump up to a ledge above you but aren't quite high enough to make the jump, press the jump button again to climb onto the ledge. This introduces "clamber jumps" but this does not mean crouch jumps have been removed.
It is important to note that all players have these abilities: every single one. You don't pick one at the beginning of a match, every single player is equipped with all of them at once. It's an even playing field for everyone.
If you have heard of Halo 5's REQ system and are worried about players being able to call in special weapons and vehicles they got out of REQ packs, don't worry. In Arena, the classic Halo multiplayer segment of Halo 5, the only items from REQ packs you can use are the cosmetic ones (weapon skins, armor, helmets, special assassination animations, etc.) The weapons and vehicles from REQ packs are for a totally separate mode called Warzone which is 12 vs. 12 on maps 4 times the size of a typical Halo map. The mode is a bit complicated to explain, but fortunately there's plenty of resources available on YouTube and Halo Waypoint that can do it more eloquently and concisely than I can.
I hope you'll give the game a shot when it comes out. If classic Halo 4v4 multiplayer is what you're looking for, the game has you covered.
