SUPERBEAT: XONIC Review Thread

The Vita Lounge - 92/100
SUPERBEAT: XONiC is a fantastic rhythm game that uses its roots to its advantage; drawing from DJ MAX experience to create a portable addiction that's accessible to all fans of the genre, and playable (with a challenge) at all skill levels. If you pick up one rhythm game this year it should most certainly be this one!

God is a Geek - 90/100 (9/10)
This is my favourite rhythm game across all platforms, with its song selection spreading across all genres, perfect core gameplay, and fantastic presentation.

PlayStation LifeStyle - 85/100
The tunes’ over-the-top excursions into sensory overload are a ton of fun, and their brief length makes them ideal for portable gaming.

PS Nation - 85/100 (8.5/10)
The idea behind XONiC is to make a rhythm game for rhythm game fans. There are some small nitpicks that could probably improve it, however, the fantastic soundtrack and otherwise sturdy gameplay mechanics lead to a great music game overall. The difficulty, which can ramp up significantly for the hardest songs and missions, also helps and is well attuned for those who want a challenge.
In a year of plenty of great music games, XONiC tries to stay away from the pack by focusing on the group who just wants a solid rhythm game without frills. I’d say that SUPERBEAT: XONiC succeeds at that, making it a game worth checking out.

bemanistyle - 85/100 (8.5/10)
I experienced a few touch screen, navigation and HUD setbacks in my time with the game and there are a few missing elements for fans of DJ Max, but when you factor in the elements that really matter for a rhythm game - music and gameplay - Superbeat XONiC fires on all cylinders.

Push Square - 80/100
It's not only a great addition to the Vita's library – it's one of the best rhythm games on the platform.

ZTGD - 80/100
Even though I wasn’t as big of a fan of the song list in XONiC compared to other DJMax games, the developers at PM Studios prove themselves to be back in top form with a slick package that plays just as well as it looks.

Con Freaks & Geeks - 80/100 (4/5 Stars)
Aside from a few control missteps, SUPERBEAT: XONiC is a slick, stylish production that sets a high standard for rhythm music games.

We Got This Covered - 70/100
Easy to get into and challenging to master, Superbeat: Xonic will please many rhythm game fans, even if a few presentation elements feel like a step backwards from the developer's previous work.

High-Def Digest - 70/100 (3.5/5 Stars)
'Superbeat: XONiC' is not a bad game, but it doesn't even try to appeal to everyone. The steep and brutal learning curve can scare many away, with only the DL portraits to help allivate some of the difficulty. Then again, this isn't for the average rhythm gamer, this is more for those that wish that the tough arcade titles of yesteryear would make a return… and in that aspect, 'Superbeat: XONiC wonderfully fills that niche.

Cubed3 - 70/100 (7/10)
Superbeat: Xonic is a solid and ambitious rhythm game, and possibly one of the best to ever release on the PlayStation Vita. The large amount of content will certainly keep players enticed and immersed, but thumbs may feel strained during the task of playing the more challenging and rapid songs, unfortunately. However, thanks to incredible sounding music, ears will be blissfully satisfied, as well as the user and any avid music listener.

Just reading the excerpt from the OP. Coming from Persona 4: Dancing All Night and seeking something different, this:

...sounds like all positives to me. Looking forward to it.

I don't understand how a reviewer can say a game wonderfully fills its niche, and yet gets a 7/10. Unless they're doing the whole "5 is the true average" thing.

My review:

It's DJMAX except it's not. Buy it, it's good. Probably the best rhythm game to hit the west since the DJMAX psp titles.

If you have any questions about the game I'll be glad to answer them.

Do you feel the setlist is diverse enough?

Coming from recent IIDX mixes the setlist is a breath of fresh air. I do miss some old djmax favorites (and what I wouldn't give for Back To Life to come back) but everything I've heard so far has been at the very least decent, with some absolutely fantastic tracks. Genre's are suitably all over the place.

Related: Que Siga La Rumba isn't on the official ost and it's one of the best songs in the game :(

Happy to see the good reviews. You can tell it's the DJMAX team when even the trophies are the same as Technika Tune. Just glad to see these guys still making top tier rhythm games. It's been a great year for the genre in general really.

I was disappointed when I saw that they decided to have notes going from the center to the outer edges because I found that more confusing (plus multiple note sections being green makes it harder to differentiate what button it's for).

When I actually played it, I found it less confusing than I initially thought on lower difficulties but still pretty hard to read on the higher button modes.

I love the simplicity of IIDX, DJMAX, DDR, etc. style notes.

I have it preordered, coming next week. I hope the ost is as diverse as previous djmax. IA/VT looks ace in presentation, but the few songs I played were not really that great.

How's the soundtrack like in this game?

Varied compared to most rhythm games developed in the East; though there wasn't anything I knew, there was a little bit of everything genre-wise.

Techno, electronica, metal, rock, hardcore, R&B, pop, easy listening, classical-infused, video game music, cultural pieces, and everything in-between.

Game is absolutely awesome. I played out for a few hours earlier today and was super pleased. Nice and difficult.

Seems good. Think I might pick it up.

that puzzling face
A part of me is bummed by the loss of keysounds/BGA, but if it's what it takes for the community to keep pumping out great music and excellent games, I can totally deal.

What's the difficulty level compared to DJMAX?

Fuck, reading these reviews is making me so excited.

As a big fan of DJ Max Technika Tune, I'd be all over this, but the absence of animated cutscenes during songs is a pretty big negative in my book. Seems like it'd get boring pretty quick just looking at neon lights.

The Xrd Sign theme? song has it's own video. The neon patterns also seem to be based on the song, and they haven't seemed repetitive so far.

Comparing the one 12 I've seen to some of the 12's I know of in DJ Max, I would say about the same. It's hard to say for sure because the difficulty is there for different reasons. SX doesn't have chords on one hand, but will overlay FX on anything and you need to be able to swap to the stick if you're playing buttons, two new skills to learn that add to the perceived difficulty.

Awesome, sounds like it will still be a challenge. Thanks!

If I really enjoy Project Diva games on Extreme, might I find this game enjoyable? (In terms of gameplay, difficulty, etc.)

XONiC has more difficulty songs that most extreme ones in DIVA, World Tour was made for that.

AT PMS we're really happy with the reception of the public so far, it's sad that reviewers couldn't get the 1.02 update (which fixed all the issues reported) on time. it's schreduled by SCEA to be uploaded next week.

Hopefully they will reconsider their scores after that

Good to see these reviews. Got my vita charged. For tomorrow. Might take it to work as its where my game will be delivered lol

It's more interesting than "neon lights." The backgrounds are unique and set-up for each song, they're just more generic than usual. For example, one song (can't recall which right now) has a short pause where everything goes silent for a second and the background stops moving at that moment. Like you, I lament the cool videos that the previous DJMAX games did, however this should not be the deciding factor in getting the game or not. In my opinion. :D

My review is up on God is a Geek 9/10

SUPERBEAT: XONiC is my current obsession. When I’m not playing through the songs, I’m thinking about them. I can’t wait to finish this review so I can get back to leveling up on 6 TRAK FX. Every fan of rhythm games needs this in their life. Sony may have given up on the Vita but third parties are keeping it alive and how.
