Rise of the Tomb Raider - Review Thread

Reboot was highly rated too but found it lacking massively after the first hour or so. Would of rated 6/10 personally

Hoping the experience in this one is more adventure and far less action. Tomb Raider is always at its best when she is exploring and commenting and doing acrobatics then when you are pointing and shooting stuff. At work so unable to read reviews but hopefully they talk about that
Hope so as well. Found the 2013 version a solid 7/10. Although all reviews say this game is better, so I will see this weekend.

I want to say your so lucky, but have you been saving up holidays? If your switching between jobs, then, I'm just well jealous.

I surprised this game has reviewed so well, the metacritic is rising and has just hit 87 and is above H5.

I enjoyed the first one, but It didn't knock my socks off. Think I'm going to give this one a whirl. I have 2 days off to the end of next week, I think I'll be smashing through this.

5 weeks paternity leave. I'm off until december 5th. :D

Best gaming weeks of the year woo!

There's little point. Consider any reviews for the Xbox One mostly valid, and then wait for DF to do a face-off, as that's the only meaningful difference.

Good thinking.

I just got Witcher 3 used from Gamestop this weekend, and am thinking that maybe I'll return it and get RotR instead on the 360 since I'm Xboneless.

AHH I really want to play this, but don't want a new console :(. This is the first time the exclusive deal has really started to piss me off!

If you like, we can set up a Skype video call, and I'll press whatever you tell me to.

HA I am not sure I can put up with 10+ seconds of input lag. I guess I'll just wait for the PC port.

Do you have a 360?

Not currently but could probably get one really cheap. TBH I am not interested in playing a watered down version of the game, however great the port is.

My copy is bought and pre-loaded, can't wait for tomorrow. This weekend should be fun playing this !

The reviews make me even more hyped ! very good scores !

Really excited now, so of course the exclusive deal pisses me off even more.

Wonder what they'll add for the PS4 port. Is there a season pass for this?

No, but then again - I probably wouldn't have bought it for the PS4 either way.
Didn't love TR:DE... And this looks like more of the same to me.
Although I symphatize with those having to wait a year to play it.

Not from your end, I would be bad at articulating what I wanted you to do. Then there would be the arguments.....

"I'm sorry, what part of 'shoot him in the head and don't let him kill you' did you not understand?"

Yea... I can see the potential problems.

Be careful they might remove the passion.

But yeah, congrats for great scores, hopefully this sells well. Which is hard as many have pointed out, games coming at same week and Blobs last week, gonna be hard to find customers, no matter how good game.

This is not paid exclusivity.

This is Microsoft paying Square to make another Tomb Raider.

Can we cool it with the Uncharted mentions and whining about Microsoft? An exclusive's an exclusive. It's reviewing well. No need to start whining about that.

I really can't agree with this. There is no way this wasn't already getting made. Heck, if Microsoft were the ones paying Square to make a sequel then surely the exclusivity would have been announced along with the game, rather than a couple of months later.

I wanna say I heard it in an interview with Phil back at E3.

Why don't we get this kind of whining for SFV? It's the same situation, except SFV was guaranteed to come out no matter what.

I'm a big fan of Uncharted and I wish we had an action adventure game of that ilk. We've started some, and we've looked at them. But we don't have one today of that quality. This is an opportunity.
so no, this isn't at all the same case as sf5. if it were, a Ps4 port wouldn't be coming down the road. phil spencer paid for Ps4 users not to have this game for a year. he didn't pay to fund the game like sony's doing with sf5.

and i'm pretty sure between the two, rotr was the one that was gonna come out "no matter what". wasn't capcom in bad financial place when sony made the sf5 deal with them?

At its current Metascore (87), it's one point up on the previous game. That strikes me as both solid and expected for a game that looks like a straightforward iteration and improvement over the previous well liked game.

Uh, if Bluepoint were in charge of downgrading UC4 for PS3, it would be the exact same thing.

Its not an up port, nor does it have any effect on the XB1 lead platform version, its a downport done by a talented studio

That's not how it works. There are normal features and animations that would on current gen and not on last gen. BioWare talked very openly about how they created several features on current gen but for the sake of cross gen, they had to cut the features because they were limited by the RAM ceiling of porting to last gen. Just because PC or current gen are lead, doesn't mean they are free to do whatever they want. It's quite naive of you to think Crystal went freewheeling on current gen game features and Nixxes somehow managed to imitate absolutely all of them for far weaker hardware or that all the game features happened to be simple enough to run on last gen. The game is true cross gen - it was developed in collaboration with Nixxes to fit the last gen ceiling without loss of features or quality outside of minor effects.

Guys...just as with the Fallout 4 reviews i rather not read any of ROTTR either....but...

I just want to know this:

Are there actually challenging puzzles and proper tombs now? (with challenging i guess i mean similar to Legend and Underworld) and are there enough to satisfy those who are hungry for those things? :)

Congrats on a solid game MS. Really not happy about the delayed release for PS4 (would say the same if the tables were turned), but glad to know I'll eventually be getting to play a quality game!

Eurogamer touches on this:

In nine optional Challenge Tombs and at a couple of junctures in the story, Lara finds herself gingerly exploring lonely ruins, gorgeous in their centuries-old decay. Here she solves cleverly assembled, if relatively simple, physics puzzles to gain access to a treasure trove. (In this game, the treasures are new skills - the designers clearly knew what they were getting right.) Quiet descends, all the firefights and resource nodes and progress tickers recede, and the game drinks from a well too few contemporaries bother to seek out. Just a woman and her wit, unlocking the secrets of the distant past.

It's not the lip-service the 2013 game paid to the tomb-raiding concept, but it's still barely more than a sideline for nouveau Tomb Raider. Given the tombs' strong flavour and Crystal Dynamics' comfortable command of the form, why couldn't there have been more of them, with harder puzzles, and why couldn't they have occupied some of the space filled with empty battles and vacant scrambles in the storyline? Was it a lack of corporate confidence or a surfeit of bitter experience that led to tomb raiding taking a back seat? I'm not sure I want to know the answer.

WTF pretty solid reviews. I'm torn now I want Fallout 4 and I want this.

I wonder what CD can do to move from great games which are really well made to OMG 10/10 GOTY, please have my babies type games?

I wasn't happy either about the timed exclusive and I am still not, but I really like TR 2013 and I couldn't pass on this one. I hate that it has to be like this but it is what it is. It's reviewing well and now people are really going to get pissed and rightfully so. I'm just glad that I am able to play it. I do feel bad for TR fans that can't play it. As a gamer, this is the part of the industry that I really dislike.
