So apparently PS4 is jailbroken

It'll be interesting to see if this goes anywhere.

Sony did a pretty good job with security this time if it's taken 2 years to make even a slight crack in the defenses.

I don't like this. at. all.

Jailbreak should be something that should be released at the end of life cycle, not in the middle of it. It just messes up the system, has an affect on the software sales and potentially screws the online eco-system.

The only positive is the potential to utilize the official emulators like it happened with PS3. A Jailbroken PS3 can play PS1/PS2/PSP games making it the unlimited PS machine. But I doubt if PS4 even has similar functional emulators for PS1/PS2/PSP coded into the firmware.

it can be done trough flasher, i knows, it's not only a software solution! But it can be done anyway. For the firmware full access i read it on wololo site, in the article about this exploit. Anyway even if it's not full access yet, it's only a matter of time. cTurt is was crystal clear, the console is considered "jailbreaked" now. There are more info on wololo site.
Yeah, if your PS3 originally came with firmware 3.55 or lower from the factory, then you can flash it indeed. That is however a relatively expencive and technical process, which limits the appeal. That is just my point, that if the entry point is hard to do, or very limited, such hacks doesnt really do much harm in the big picture.

But regardless, yes, we will see how this hack evolves further =)

Hope to see this used for interface tweaks and a competent mediaplayer app with DLNA. Of course who the hell knows how deep they really got.

Wiiu has been "jailbroken" for yonks yet the data execution module has prevented piracy, same will happen with ps4.

RAM injection's been a thing for WiiU for a few months now, its fully cracked on a specific old firmware. Its just convoluted for your general consumer and the console is dead.

The question with this PS4 hack and its impact will depend on how difficult or easy it is.

Crackers =/= Hackers =/= Pirates.

PS4 being x86 is going to be very interesting in OS prospects, imagine a W10 PS4 running Steam games - It's a pipe dream but people can still wish.

While cool in theory I don't see much use in a Jaguar based W10 gaming machine. The only reason the PS4 (and One) get the results they do is the closed system. Running that same rig on a general purpose OS isn't likely to lend itself to great results.

lol, no, not really.
If it was that easy, Xbox emulation would already be possible at fullspeed. Talking about OG Xbox.

There's actually a great thread on why OG Xbox emulation hasn't progressed very far, I can try and find it if you'd like. It mostly boils down to custom hardware and lack of interest thanks to so many PC ports if I remember correctly.

Unless something has changed, not wiiu games.
Yeah a few months ago they found a webkit exploit on older firmwares that allows full retail game backups to be played. They claim to have newer exploits for more recent firmwares not yet released.

The ability for others to hack and ruin an online experience for everyone is very much a concern when you've paid money for a game.

"Oh the horror" isn't your money. Its someone else's.

The person you were responding to was mocking why anybody cares about a stranger messing with trophies. Not cheating in online games. Very different ethics involved in the two.

I dont think it matters tbh.

But i cant wait for the

So as a PS4 user, what should I be concerned about or should I not be concerned at all? Does this truly affect me or will Sony just update their security? Why should I care?

I'm not very familiar with people jailbreaking consoles.

I assume people are mostly scared of "hackers" or people cheating in games like GTA and CoD with rank hacks, god mode, aimbot and whatnot.

If both publishers and sony stay on top of this it'll require a new update to play online and as such they wont be able to use it
as easily
against others.

But the damage is done? Now Sony and publishers have to play keep up to stop people from ruining online play?

Hey at least I might be able to pat $5 for 100mil of GTA online cash. . not worth this situation that seems like a slippery slope for PS4.

Well, to me this is mixed blessing news. One is that now Sony will have to send a stability update every week from here on out till the end of time to keep thr hackers on there toes, resulting in more R & D budget that would've gone to more gaming studios and the other hand, will see if the hackers can make the PS4 console truly BC with PS2 disk games or at leadt be able to rip my 500 game library of PS2 games, particularly the many RPG's on it. Maybe this will force Sony to get there ass in gear on making BC disc compatible for PS2 games and have PS3 makes also BC not nexessarily disc based.

Depends how far they got i would assume. All i see is people saying they've done it, but not what they managed to do and are able to "edit".

if this is true. thats insane. ps4 came out 2013. so thats what like 2 years to jailbreak? wasnt there a rumor of a jailbreak in brazil in 2014 though?

No:

I just don't want to see people using cheats in online games or fucking with trophies.

In case you missed it:

using cheats in online games

I've literally no idea what's "jailbroken" about it based on that IRC log? They've got a UI crash because of the network and a log dump to USB?

It's a pun. A FreeBSD Jail is an virtual machine abstraction. So because he broke one with a webkit exploit, he posted that it was '"jailbroken" :p', in quotes.

I guess this would be something of a big deal 10 years ago but I said this with PSP and Vita and PS3, I'm not giving up access to the online as I'm so invested in PSN. Good for those who will be looking for the wrojg things out of this but I can't lose my online access.

It depends on the extent of the crack and access to lower level controls, and how easy it is for general people to reproduce.

In general these things will just lead to a rat race between patches and cracks, that will generally not impact you at all if the devs keep on top of it/bans. (Splatoon has been hacked for months, but the people who do it, for instance, are good people and just do it for teasing/fun with the community. Also when hacks were brought it into online play, they were banned.)

But the scope can go anywhere from innocuous (all consoles are cracked sooner or later, and you usually won't know/notice) to crippling if it gets to be as easy/bad as the DS/PSP/Wii. The worst case scenario is software sales cratering but thats an extreme worst case scenario.

Yeah seems like once a year there is a rumour about a jailbreak and then nothing

The thing in Brazil was/is very real, but its about cloning not jailbreaking.

if this is true. thats insane. ps4 came out 2013. so thats what like 2 years to jailbreak? wasnt there a rumor of a jailbreak in brazil in 2014 though?

WiiU was cracked completely open in around three years, for modern barometers.

I really dislike companies telling people what they may and may not do with hardware they bought, so if they manage to break it far enough to run custom OS etc - all power to them.

Thing is, they shouldn't have to. If I take my old Atari what's to stop me making my own game for it? Nothing. Nothing at all.

The 'H' stands for hentai.
Looking forward to PS1, PS2, PS3, PSP, PS Vita, and emulation for all the 8 bit to dreamcast consoles.

This will be amazing ;___;

Finally a solution for all of disc based games that constantly get ejected randomly that sony won't fix with out paying them.

I've been waiting for this but didn't expect it to happen so soon.
