Well, Anakin is in ghost form at the end of Return of the Jedi. Anakin is Vader. Even though he went Dark Side he can only be one person/one ghost.

If Snookie is Plagueis and he can bring people back to life, the scrip can do anything with this, including having Vader recreated, in ghost form or not.

I really hate Kylo Ren after him to take out the famous wanted man in the galaxy which is his father... All the feelings. T^T

So Finn and Poe are totally going to be the buddy cop duo going on adventures against the First Order in 8 and 9, right?

Because I think that would be the best next step for Finn

Driver's performance and Kylo's characterization were my favorite part of the movie.

Other than that, I really enjoyed the movie and thought every individual element was done really well...but I'm one of those who felt it was way too similar to the original movie. I was afraid it would play as a checklist of plot progressions from A New Hope, and it pretty much did. I would have appreciated even if the Starkiller Base *wasn't* destroyed, just for a moment of subverted expectations.

Still a good movie though. I'm hyped for Rian Johnson and Episode VIII.

Even though I knew it was coming, the Luke reveal was so great. Hamill totally sold an older, hardened Luke with his look and expression

Anyone wish he had shorter hair though, or the longer hair was good?

I don't think I mind the long hair, but I only saw it for a few seconds.

Going to agree here, I wanted the same to happen.

Personally I'm going to forgive essentially using the ANH plot. I get why they did it and think the characters helped the movie stand on its own. My hope is the series continues on its own from here.

Not sure if these were posted already, but here are the extra scenes/spoilers from the novelization of TFA:

-The opening is Leia wondering where Luke is and trying to call out to him that she needs him.
-Snoke mentions having seen the Empire rise and fall. If that was in the movie then I missed it.
-Leia is informed of the FO's attack on Jakku and Poe's assumed death. She is upset and does not want the FO to find Luke before they do. She knows that BB-8 is still missing so she asks 3PO to activate his tracker to find him. She then sends her envoy to the Senate in the Hosnian system to ask for help, explaining that she cannot go herself because while she still has friends there she would likely have an unfortunate "accident" because many there do not like her.
-There is a scene with 3PO talking to the low power R2 where he is basically talking to himself but asking what R2 would do, because he forgot to activate BB-8's tracker before he left on the mission. He decides to send a message to all active Resistance droids to be on the lookout for BB-8.
-We get a scene of Poe waking up after the crash. He has a concussion and it turns out that he got out of the TIE after crash landing it and wandered away before collapsing and it's just bad luck that Finn didn't find him. There's a whole sequence where he meets a scavenger who decides to help him and then they are attacked by other scavengers and Poe pilots a speeder showing off his skills again to get away.
-Unkar Plutt finds Rey at Maz's Castle. He found them because he had a homing device on the Falcon. Rey tries to use her blaster on him but the safety is on. Chewie intervenes and tears Plutt's arm off. It's at this point that a droid sees BB-8 and sends a message to the Resistance.
-Then there's a quick scene with 3PO receiving the message and informing Leia of BB-8's whereabouts. These 3PO scenes are both good but I think I prefer his first appearance in the movie.
-A scene of Leia being informed of the the destruction of the Hosnian system and feeling the deaths of all the people in the Force. And she thinks about how no one should be subjected to the death of an entire world but she had been subjected to two and she would not allow it to happen again.
-Also, it's not as easily seen in the sky above the Castle. That was one of my problems with the movie was that it made it appear that they were in the same system.
-Confirmed Han and Leia are husband and wife.
-General Hux launches something called seekers to take out the attacking X-Wings on Starkiller Base. He's warned that they will take down TIEs too but he claims that collateral damage will be necessary to win.
-There's a chase sequence involving the stolen snow speeder that Rey and Finn use to get to the oscillator.
-Kylo Ren removing his mask for Han is the first time Han has seen his son as a grown man. Also, Han debated leaving without confronting him but didn't because he wanted to fulfill Leia's request.
-Poe does not fly into the oscillator and there is no "trench run". His pilots simply bomb the hole that the detonators exposed.
-Hux rescues Kylo Ren and could have taken Finn and Rey but there was no time and his instructions from Snoke took precedence. He assumed they would die there anyways.
-The doctor tells Rey that Finn will be fine although he is in a medically induced coma and nothing is certain until he fully recovers.
-R2 has the rest of the map because he catalogued the Imperial archives. He overheard a discussion of how Kylo Ren had said that they held the rest of the map because it was in the archives. He then powers up and displays the map.
-Rey has a conversation with Leia before she leaves where Leia promises her that she will not share the fate of her son.
-Rey extends the lightsaber towards Luke as an offer and a plea because he's the galaxy's only hope. She wonders what will happen next.

I actually thought the longer hair was baller. He looked great.

Also Luke seemed scared of the sabre when she was handing it to him. Seems like she's going to have a tough time convincing him to teach her.

There's a lot (potentially) going on in that scene.

A random stranger finds your secret fucking hideout in the middle of an ocean *and* hands you your father's saber, which you last saw right before said father chopped off your hand. Plus, he *has* to sense dat Force in her.

I'd be wary and/or confused as fuck.

Really liked it. Rey and Finn are great, and BB is the nicest droid ever. Hope he plays just as big a role in the next one and is not replaced by R2 too much.

Also hope Rey is not a Skywalker. Would make Luke the most scumbag dad ever leaving her on that planet. Just let her be an unrelated totally new character that is Force sensitive.

That would make it so much deeper though she has to be his daughter otherwise her abandonment would have no emotional impact. Great movie can't wait to watch it again ;) she was with someone we couldn't see so it's not like she was totally ditched.

Yeah, I was very confused at the actual politics at play. Is the entire New Republic gone?

It's easy to miss but the political situation was laid out in Hux's speech before they fired the Starkiller. The last remnants of the Empire have become The First Order, a regional government in the outer rim. Their control of these territories is contested by a resistance, which is surreptitiously supported by the Republic, which controls the galaxy at large.

I'm pretty sure having the same basic plot was intentional to kind of make it "old but new at the same time". While the plots mostly the same, the new characters and their interactions with old ones along with the stuff it sets up for the next movies are where the movie shines to me. While the new death star was being blown up, which yeah is kind of ridiculous at this point, the real focus was the scenes with kylo ren, han, rey, finn, and then in my opinion the stuff in the light saber duel at the end was great. Also I liked the direction with luke going into hiding and them having to find him.

I liked the new stuff but I can't see past the blatant ripoff. If VIII starts with Rey on a snow planet I'm walking out of the cinema

So all the films are about Anakin, and 8-9 will continue to be so.

Rey is Anakin reborn, awakened by the events of the film, sitting dormant until key events.. Powerful, brave, great mechanic.

Kylo is Vader reborn. He talks to Vader like he is still Sith because Vader is in his head. They are both reincarnations.

Could work?

Anyone ever figure out where they sources that audio of Alec Guinness saying Rey from? Other than he probably really said Ray in whatever the source was. Lol

I really need to see the movie again. I apparently missed so much in that lightsaber vision scene. I think the movie was moving so fast I had to rest my brain for that 20 or so seconds.

I'd be for it. Also I could then enjoy even MORE fanfic of people pairing them together. ( They already have a shipping name, StormPilot)

Can't remember shit from the lightsabre flashback scene. It was over too quickly before I could even process what was going on.

Jedi masters have long hair..that's like Jedi 101 on how to Jedi dude.
Old Kenobi was an exception and so was Mace Windu (who gets by because he's Samuel mutherfuckin Jackon)

I might go watch again on Monday. It was just that good. Kylo Ren is such a great character, I can't wait to see what they do with him. Oh, and I will kill for a Luke/Rey training montage akin to Karate Kid.

Someone was speculating they took it from the word "betrayed" when he said to Luke "he betrayed and murdered your father."

From what I can remember it was the Rens standing in the rain after slaughtering other apprentices, Luke kneeling beside R2 (like he was in pain, like Yoda in ROTS after Order 66), and Rey being left on the Jakku.

Mace would have lived had he had long hair.

You think Jules Windfield with his glorious afro gets punked out by Anakin like that?

I bet when he wakes up he will have remembered his real name. My guess is he isn't a blank slate, and the first order can wipe their soldiers memories.

The old EU is dead and buried. Over. Done. It's not a matter of "noticing retcons", you couldn't pick a single thing they kept, because they've already de-canonised all of it.

Yeah, that's what I'm interested in - what did they use from the de-canonised stuff, if any? If I remember correctly, there was an EU that talked about Han and Leia's children. Did their son also go to the dark side?

Anyways, I'm glad the didn't adhere to any of it. That's one of the problems the prequel trilogy faced - telling a story while having to service the original trilogy.

So if Vader is now in ghost form, why didn't he respond to his grandson when he was praying to him? Surely Vader could be like "yo, actually I became good again so... Maybe you should knock it off?" Kinda weird that that major plot device is no longer in play and that the good Vader just let his grandson become him.

Almost forgot how exposition-heavy a lot of Han and Leia's interactions were. There was one conversation that felt entirely like backstory.

What are the chances we'll get an extended cut? I still think this could have used about 20 more mins to breathe, or cut out some of the lesser stuff and replace it.

I'm really curious how they'll explain this.

Prior to seeing it, I assumed that Kyle was a fanatic who really had no idea what exactly happened in the Throne Room in ROTJ (who would, other than Luke?). So it might make sense that he thinks Luke murdered his father in cold blood, without ever knowing that Vader actually turned good again.

But...considering he's a child of Han/Leia AND he spent time with Luke...how would he not know that Anakin moved back to the light?

I speculated earlier that I thought Rey could eventually turn to the dark side.

After reading the official novelization of the film, it certainly seems likely. Every description of Rey throughout this scene lists phrases like, "she was consumed with rage", or "she fought with fury".

As the Emperor once told Luke..."Your hatred has made you powerful."

Given that she's likely a Skywalker, I wouldn't be surprised. Maybe Snoke is able to convert her as well.

th

Got this book and lots of really fantastic stuff about the concept stages of the movie. Lots and lots and lots of fantastic art as well. Here are some things that stuck out to me:

  • Finn's original name was Sam, then Skylar. He was a white guy who was basically a new Han Solo
  • BB8 Was originally a flying droid of size of BB's head
  • Poe Dameron was originally called John Doe, and was a black guy.
  • Poe was a Jedi, then a bounty hunter, then had his own Wookie pal
  • Rey was originally called Kira, and then Thea in the storyboard phase
  • Rey's planet underwent a ton of changes. Desert planet, jungle planet, at one point the Imperial ruins were actually the remains of the second Death Star and everything was underwater, she went diving all the time for salvage
  • Han and Chewie show up in the Millenium Falcon to go looking for something hidden in the remains of the Death Star. Falcon goes underwater.
  • Speaking of Han, he was supposed to have a sick beard + long trenchcoat
  • Kylo Ren was originally a bounty hunter who idolized Vader - went around destroying Jedi relics, killing any Jedi he found, and keeping their lightsabers as trophies. Eventually that evolved into him leading a group of bounty hunters around, then that evolved to a group of stormtroopers, then it evolved into a formal organization
  • When it was still a pirate group, they used a broken down old Star Destroyer as their moving base
  • A huge theme of everything was fire and ice. Blue and red contrasting everywhere. Lava on snow planets, red and blue lightsabers, and so on
  • At some point someone was supposed to have a double bladed lightsaber. But one blade was red, the other was blue
  • There was supposed to be a new Yoda character. Younger than TPM Yoda, but has a sick beard
  • At some point, I think an old climax, has a huge army of like 100s of Red-lightsaber wielding fighters go up against about 20 or so Jedi on a field next to a huge crashed Star Destroyer
  • At a different point, the remnants of the Empire used the remains of the Rebel base that was destroyed/mentioned on Dantooine in ANH as their main base of operations. Cool callback.
  • Starkiller was originally a new Death Star (dubbed Doom Star), then evolved into a moving weapon that just absorbed/killed planets and then moved on, destroying entire systems. Then went back to a new Death Star. Then a combo (which we got with TFA)

I'll post more later. All of this is from the first 1/3rd of the book. It is well worth the money bros. Check it out.

I feel like we almost certainly will. I have to imagine there are quite a few deleted scenes done so because of time constraints.
