No I'm saying JJ probably went to bed as a kid dreaming about trading quips with Han Solo and having Han Solo want to adopt him.

Sounds about right.

Can't agree with this so I guess we're at a standstill here. Pretty sure the vision and connection to the Force gave her that motivation.

As I said before Rey fails as a leading character because she's basically an entire "?" the whole movie which is purposefully never answered.

I'll quote the Plinkett TPM Review:
Plinkett said:
"At around this point in the Original Star Wars movie we've been with Luke almost the whole time getting to know him. We see his plight, his hopes and dreams, we feel his frustration, and then his sadness. The slow build up added depth and emotion and anticipation for the story to expand..."

Rey doesn't have any of this because we know very little about her. Instead of adding depth and build up to her character her scenes on Jakku amount to the same thing as her scenes everywhere else a lot of "???" JJ Abrams favorite thing in the world. But adding mystery for mystery sake doesn't make us care or add anything interesting to a character if we have nothing to attach ourselves to them in the first place.

Luke starting off into the Tattooine sun is the perfect culmination of everything we've seen and felt with Luke up until that point. Rey staring off into the Jakku distance while visually similar has none of this depth, none of that same meaning to the audience. It might mean something to her as a character but we don't know because we don't get a real peak into her head or past. This is why her character and her alleged arc falls so flat for me.

I dont know why but i dont want Rey and Finn to develop a love relationship..
I don't just for the fact that it'd be too forced from the start. We barely got to see genuine interaction between the two to lead to that.
All we saw was "We got to stick together because we can't let the first order win"

I hope Finnrey happens mostly because Ridley and Boyega have great chemistry, but also because it'd be a pretty progressive step for the industry.

Also, the delicious salt of internet racists would be amazing.

Poe and Finn relationship incoming.

Gross! They're like brothers!

Luke and Han forever. #hanchosethewrongskywalker

Speaking of Chewie, I really liked him in this movie. Star Wars is really great at getting a lot out of none-verbal characters (like R2 and BB-8) and that applies just as strongly to Chewbacca. Lots of good gestures and mannerisms from him, especially when Han is trying to negotiate with the pirates.

Also, what kind of scene just pulled that dumb nostalgia string inside of you in particular ? Like i'm guessing most of ya'll had a little skip when most characters and familar things showed up but has there been one thing in particular ?

Throughout the whole movie i was saying to myself I shouldn't get blinded by the OT's reference and for the most part i did good. But for some stupid reason two things got a little "aww" out of me.

One was when the little chess board lit up in the millenium falcon. I don't know why but this brought a specific memory of the same scene to me.

The other was when Leia showed up. I like Carrie Fisher a lot and was following her twitter a lot prior to the movie so i got a little ball in my throat when she appeared. Even if she wasn't like the strongest presence on screen, it was kinda sweet seeing her again, all aged but still definitively leia for me

Liquidnsake likes to live dangerously.

Actually I think he's messing, I could swear he's done this same shit before with other movies.

Yeah not that intimidating. Sounded like a Pokemon name.

They really should've kept it at Great Leader. Although I don't like that either. It just makes me think of North Korea.

The X wings arriving on Takodana got me pretty giddy.

You're inferring things that are never shown in either film. How do you know Luke never went past the bubble of his farm? When he goes after R2 he specifically grabs a blaster rifle because they've been having problems with the sand people. Thus, one can infer that he's been in scrapes with at least the sand people a few times. Second, getting in quick skirmishes with Jakku riff raff does not make one a Lightsaber Expert.

Yeah, sure Luke grabbed a blaster rifle, but he also got knocked out by said sand people after wanting to "check them out". Luke knew how to handle a gun as most people on farms in America do, but he was obviously over his head with the sand people and Obi-Wan had to save his ass. Rey on the other hand has lived by herself for maybe all of her formative years, getting by as a scavenger and probably having to get out of many bad situations.

I never said that Rey's ability to handle herself made her a lightsaber expert. Just that she was much more capable and streetwise than Luke was at the beginning of his story. I agree that her sudden expertise at the lightsaber was silly.

I'm glad they didn't swap Rey and Finn during the rashtar scene solely for that fact that we would have to endure a life time of tentacle monster jokes.

What i'd find awesome and hilarious with the Finn x Poe bro up is that in the following movie they go all in the dumb hero persona, try to upstand the other by doing a pose or acting cool but just being complete dorks

What's the consensus on the last shot? I was kinda taken aback by it at first, but I think I'm coming around on it. I keep seeing it in my head and it looks pretty awesome, in its own weird way.

You cracked it. Two Skywalkers = TWICE the force power!

Everything makes sense now. Incest explains everything.

Ren: "None of you mean anything to me!"
Luke: "Not even your father?"
Ren: "I killed my father!"
Luke: "No Ben, I am your father."

After a rewatch, my opinion remains unchanged. Enjoyable, respectful 7.5/10 movie which is easily better than the prequels, but decidedly less excellent than the originals.

My complaints remain vexing though, and I'm going to move my disappointment with the score to the number 1 spot. John Williams, what have you done?

Jacen 2 being a whinging cur is novel, but this is not a worthwhile novelty as far as storytelling goes. If an antagonist has no presence, is not menacing and imposes no threat, the core conflict of the plot is imperiled. I'm hoping he receives an upgrade after completing his training.

I did enjoy that his headgear appears to be a take on the original Sith battle-mask

Was getting caught part of your plan?

I saw the movie again and it's still bad. There's some great shots in this film but the helicam ending ain't one of em.

I get what they were going for, and I appreciate it, but it would've been a lot better with just a still shot of them both at each side.
