Predict: 2016 in Gaming

So if you're reading this, congratulations you almost made it through 2015 unscathed. It's been a great year when all is said and done. Hoverboards are gaining popularity, Jaws 19 finally came out after months of hype, and anti-gravity is being used to cure back injuries. And of course the games, from Bloodborne, to Rise of the Tomb Raider from Super Mario Maker to Undertale 2015 has been a remarkable year for games both big and small.

However all of that is in the past now. It's time to take out our crystal balls, dress up as Michael Pachter and try to predict the future of gaming the best we can.

1. No Man's Sky lives up to the hype.
Since practically its announcement, Hello Game's No Man's Sky has been unfairly compared to Spore. Besides the fact both games are ambitious, they're almost nothing a like. Still, unless you're going in with extremely high expectations, the game will be met with positive reviews and will end up as a solid seller.

2. VR will underwhelm.
This is what's going to get my house torched. Don't get me wrong, Virtual Reality is an exciting technology that will offer a lot of possibilities not done before on either film or gaming. With all that being said all three of the major players, Vive, Oculus, and PSVR are still being coy with their launch dates and their pricing. Which to me doesn't inspire much confidence. The big problem though is that despite being positioned as new platforms, they're still very much accessories to the PC/PS4 and not actually standalone platforms. While it'll still maintain a strong niche of followers its mainstream viability is still iffy to say the least.

3. Horizon Zero Dawn: Game of the Year
The amount of times the Witcher 3 won GOTY at various outlets just shows how much we crave western RPGs. Horizon's unique setting combining a post apocalypse with tribal imagery will be a sight to behold and make it standout from other RPGs. Combine with its wonderfully designed protagonist in Aloy and robot freaking dinosaurs and not only will this be Guerrilla Game's magnum opus but a huge fan favorite among the press come end-year. Or it gets delayed to 2017 which is very well possible.

4. The NX
Okay, let's not try to turn this into a sole NX speculation thread because that's how threads get locked. With that being said it is Nintendo's biggest elephant in the room and there's a lot we don't know. Still, I think it won't release in 2016 but it will be shown off at E3 definitely won't have Mario, Zelda, Pikmin, Smash Bros. all at launch. That's just delusional. Whatever Nintendo does have planned for this machine (we don't even know its form factor) will be both exciting, cool, fun and make the internet mad because it's not a "traditional" video game machine.

5. The Division will suck.
I mean it could be good but anything overly ambitious made by Ubisoft has tend to fallen flat on its face. See Watch_Dogs and Assassin's Creed Unity

P.S. Specific predictions people, no "Some games will exist" or "games will be delayed" at least try have some fun.

1. Some Games Will Come Out

I know, I know, but bare with me here. In the year 2016, something is going to come out. Hell, maybe even more than one thing might come out. I know you're probably looking at me like I'm crazy, but just trust me.

2. Some Games Might Be Good

It's going to be even harder to hear this, but some of the games that come out this year might actually be decent. Decent enough for you to spend your hard earned $59.99 on. Maybe it will be one of those games coming out that I mentioned before? Who really knows.

3. Some Games Might Be Bad

We can't have good without bad. I'd love to say no games will be bad, but sadly at least one game will be bad. 2016 will feature bad games.

All the big games expected for 2016 will be delayed to 2017, only exceptions being the big games expected for 2015 which were already delayed to 2016.

Capcom announcing they actually make games, showing us Itsuno's Devil May Cry 5, Dragon's Dogma 1 on twin consoles and Dragon's Dogma 2. Big surprise of E3 is they also announce Playstation vs Capcom.

We are mid way into the generation with some publishers yet to release or even announce a lot of their heavy hitter franchises or IPs for this generation. Next year should be a fun year in terms of game announcements, particularly from publishers like Capcom, Take Two, and Namco.

A bunch of the biggest games will ship in poor states.

Nintendo won't manage to change the minds of people that have no interest in Nintendo consoles, will retain their hardcore fanbase, and somehow both confuse and captivate the people in the middle.

VR will impress, but think it is years away from attracting a mainstream audience, and there will be a large range of growing pains with the early titles release for VR.

The Division will suck.

I think you're misjuding the power of VR. I predict it will launch with an enormous boom in early Q1 and devices will remain backordered well into Q2, and impress. VR is an entirely new territory and developers, both AAA and indie, are excited to take their piece of the pie and validate the tech. I think we'll see lots of VR surprises in 2016. The companies behind VR haven't been sitting on their hands waiting for launch, they are vigorously seeking content deals and content creators to quickly validate the product and get it to take off, or else all this work will have been in vain.

Don't underestimate VR in 2016.

The Division will suck.
No Man's Sky will probably be good. Until everyone gets bored of it.
Zelda will release on Wii U alongside the NX.

Uncharted 4 and Zelda U will duke it out for GOTY status and everyone will die in the process.

Dark Souls 3 will not win many GOTY awards and people will still be surprised that the souls series doesn't win many awards.

Quantum Break will be goty.
The Division will probably be a very solid game.
People will hate on the new Zelda and say Skyward Sword was better.
People will also hate on the new WoW expansion and say Warlords of Dreanor was better.

Final Fantasy 15 will come out, and it'll be awesome.

NX will come out, and it'll be awesome.

Gears 4, Zelda NX and Uncharted 4 will sell a bajillion copies each, and they'll all be awesome.

I don't know, man, U4 kinda seems like a lock for GOTY2016 so far

lol what

i really hope that the division turns out great.
i also expect legion not to be great, but nothing could be worse than warlords. nothing. warlords is worse than if we were still raiding siege.

Don't try to put this apathetic sarcastic act man. At least either try to have some fun or don't post at all.

I really can't imagine The Division not sucking. Like, that's not a future that I can formulate in my head. It has to suck.
And I have nothing against the game personally and I hope it's good, but i just can't help but feel that it's going to not be very good.

The Division will most definitely suck and the online will be a ghost town in a couple of months after release.

I've been baffled by the hype since they first showed it, and continue to be baffled that any doesn't expect it to be mediocre at best.

Yeah let's take the most cliche modern setting for an action game, put humans against humans, and just give them normal/modern weapons. Oh but there will be some kind of online aspect with loot. So it's like Borderlands but without the personality.

NX will launch in 2016.
3D Mario and Retro's title (Metroid) will be in the launch window (both teams have had 3 years), along with Zelda U as a cross gen title.
Smash 4 will get an NX port which will include all DLC, and Pikmin 4 and Splatoon 2 will be announced for 2017.

- No Man's Sky will be both good and disapointing

- Horizon: Zero Dawn gets delayed

- The Division will end up a disapointment

- VR will be great, but it will not be huge outside the enthusiasts yet

- Final Fantasy XV will be a phenomenom like VII was

- Final Fantasy VII remake episode 1 will come out and will have an hour or so of gameplay

The Last Guardian will NOT come out in 2016.

Uncharted 4 will be delayed till Jun 2016, but it will be worth the wait.

Half of the games people are putting in hype lists saying "2016 is going to be godlike!!" will not come out in 2016.

crash Bandicoot returns. I break out in tears and nostaligia. I don't think couldn't care less about anything at that point.

1. The Division will suck.

2. Horizon Zero Dawn will win multiple GoTY's
in 2017
.

3. VR will be a smash success on numerous platforms and gain most visibilty with PSVR.

4. NMS will come out to great critical reception, have a hardcore fanbase but face harsh consumer criticism.

I don't expect to hear "PS4 has no games" by the end of next year.

Infact, i'd wager to say a majority of the JRPG's that are on the platform will herald a relative resurgence in interest for those types of games. And i largely expect them to gain generally positive acclaim with reviewers.

Also, i expect PSVR's launch to be very muted barring in mind the extra costs involved.

As for NX, i expect a reveal at E3, and a unit in line with Nintendo's philosophy. Far stronger than Wii U, but weaker than XB1, with a traditional controller, price competitive hardware with the current gen consoles, and a suite of new Nintendo titles, along with certain third parties jumping aboard and announcing 'unprecedented partnerships'. Regardless, i feel that most people will be happier with NX's direction than they were with the Wii U.

I also expect the "Wii U Zelda" to be a launch title for NX as well.

1. Horizon won't be released in 2016
2. NX will perform like the WiiU saleswise. Hardware barely touches the PS4.
3. Steam Machines will die fast
4. VR on PC and PS4 will be huge.
5. Vita still dead.
6. Knack 2
7. Xbone $199
8. PS4 still has no gamez.

Hopefully, FFXV and Persona 5 help to finally kickstart the ps4 in japan and trigger the return to glory for the JRPG genre. I also think this may be the year where someone finally gets a succesful moba to launch on consoles. I think nintendo will reveal the NX, but i do not think it will release in 2017

Battleborn will fizzle out.

The Last Guardian will get delayed.

There'll be a bunch of threads on here debating on whether FFXV or P5 is better. FFXV wins in the eyes of the majority though.

PS4 gets a decent, but not mind-blowingly earthshattering, bump in Japan.

NX gets some good-sized Japanese games but obviously not all of them. Dragon Quest, maybe FFXV? Sure. But mostly just stuff that'll be quick and easy to port.

We'll get Yakuza 6 and Kiwami, but a year late, each.

25th anniversary Sonic game is a followup to Generations and actually pretty good. Fire and Ice though? lol

Tekken 7 makes it to home consoles either late this year or early next year. Soulcalibur VI is announced at TGS.

World of Final Fantasy is criminally overlooked.

Persona 5 European release date: *massive fart noise*

PS4 will be thriving, it's the year of the PS4.

More games will be ressurrected from death.

More console exclusive games are coming to PC.

VR will be struggling to gain momentum on its first year.

-FFXV won't be most peoples' favorite in the series but will succeed in not being a trainwreck like XIII was and restore peoples' faith in Squeenix's ability to make good games, which is really all it needs to do.
-Persona 5 will sort of be 2016's Undertale, in that it will be highly overrated by fans but simultaneously not given the respect it deserves from more mainstream gaming outlets. And in that it will have the year's best soundtrack, of course. The game itself will be pretty much what we want/expect- an iteration of Persona 4's ideas, not doing anything too risky.
-Several hyped 2016 releases that we haven't seen too much of yet will slip to 2017. Mass Effect and either Horizon or TLG (probably Horizon) are my guesses.
-VR will be well-received by enthusiasts but not gain any sort of mainstream traction for another couple of years.
-Gust will unveil Akira Tsuchiya's next Surge Concerto game, which will have VR support (or possibly be VR only.)

Hmm.

1. Metroid Federation Force will be a fun game overall, but sell like garbage because of the branding.

2. No Mans Sky will be incredibly underwhelming, so much to explore, but the planets will just be empty and there will end up being little to do in game.

3. Star Fox Zero AND/OR Zelda U will get a 8.8/10 score.

4. VR will have a rocky launch, but will gain traction.

5. Ouya will still be $99 in retail.

6. Metroid Other M will still cost $49.99 at the Walmart across the road from me.
